This is savage!

Hey everybody, it's late Wednesday night here at the offices, and we're listening to Tom Waits and toasting Joss Whedon, Georges Jeanty, Jo Chen, and the whole Buffy crew. 100,000 copies of Buffy #1 blew out of the warehouses today, more than 25% above what we had for orders. Excalibur in Portland, Oregon sold out today, and Comix Experience in San Francisco ordered real strong, and they should be sold out by the weekend, according to the guy we talked to there"”sorry, buddy, can't remember your name, but I blame the toasting. Or it may just be the Waits. Bridge City Comics in Portland is selling briskly, but after ordering higher on Buffy than they normally do Astonishing X-Men, they might have copies through the weekend.

So we're already going back to print, and will have more copies to stores within a few weeks. We're real interested in hearing from other retailers across the country"”all our friends"”about how the book's doing, and if you're getting new customers from it. When we were checking out the new books at Excalibur tonight, they got a couple calls from people looking for copies of the book, and it sounded like they were not regular customers. Fan mail is pouring in, and it sounds like people approve of our writer's handling of the characters ...

We're very happy about Buffy, and grateful to everyone involved, especially Joss, for creating this unique chance to continue such a cool piece of pop culture right here in this fantastic medium. Here's to Joss, to Buffy, and to comics"”

25% above what they were expecting, that is awesome! 100,00 copies is so cool.

I felt so odd buying my copy today, cuz when people go in on a Thursday they stock up on all the new issues of their comics, and there I was with my 1 issue and didn't even look at the others it was just like "oooh" grab, buy, Hop on bus and read!

They also saw the second re-printing will have a different cover:

Writer Joss Whedon's magic touch with comic book readers and retailers seems to be as strong as ever. Dark Horse Comics has announced that Whedon's Buffy the Vampire Slayer #1, the debut of the "unfilmed" 8th season of Whedon's signature creation, has sold out immediately at the retailer level, and that a they are "rushing" back to press for a new printing, with a variant cover.

Retailers are also reporting brisk sales and high interest in the new series.

The new printing is expected in stores on March 28th.

No I was expecting it to do well, but there was a part of me that was begining to think it was getting allot of Press and then could fail - Glad it didn't. so It's just great news!! 🙂

that's awesome news. i just hope i can still get a copy tomorrow! lol

I was checking the superherohype boards too. Legions of hardcore comic book geeks. Lots of chatter. They seem to mostly like Buffy 8, #1.

I just got back from my local comic store. It's just a tiny, little, nook in an obscure shopping mall in the suburbs thing. He told me they got in 30, and they were gone in an hour. I put my name on a waiting list for the weekend, but now with this sold out thing, I don't know.

Yeah I'm very glad it's doing well. I got my copy today I just wish it wasn't so short, when I got to the end I was like damnit! That's it! Gimme more!!!!

Selling out so early may turn out to be a mistake for Dark Horse. People will be driven to file sharing programs, then they will realize, "Hey, this isn't a bad way to read a comic", and they won't come back next month.

The thing is Dark Horse knew there was a big demand for this. They could have been prepared.

Yeah I know, what were they thinking of course this would be huge.

I managed to order a copy from an online store, they ony had 2 copies left last night, and seeing as though there isn't anywhere else remotely close to me to buy a copy from I ended up paying more for postage than for the comic itself 'lol'

Oh, and YAY me, this is the first ever comic I have ever bought! 😀

Mrs P is going out at lunchtime to (hopefully) pick up my ordered copy from the comic shop in Grimsby...I'm not bothered about 1st print or 2nd print or any of that stuff, as long as I get a comic 🙂

The second printing comes out with a variant cover, so I imagine that affects collectibility - price-wise.

If I remember correctly from my collecting days, the first print is usually the most valuable, unless subsequent prints have some sort of limited edition status or are printed with errors (or something else happens to make them rarer). I never used to bother about that stuff, I just wanted a good comic.

This will be the first ongoing series I've bought in more than ten years. These days I tend to get the graphic novel versions of anything that catches my attention...it's easier, though a lot less fun than getting a monthly order used to be 🙂

I agree that they should have prepared, I haven't got my copy, and amazon seems to have a sell-out also. ::huh1:: And the funny thing is key word 'Buffy Season 8 Comic' hasn't matched with anything till yesterday, and when it did it is an already sold-out item.

it's offical...i didn't get it. i went to the comic store this morning and they were all sold out. they said they're getting new stock in next Thursday, so i'll be there at 9am to get my hands on it.
just have to wait another week, guys. *sigh*

Mrs P just rang me to say she'd picked up my copy at lunchtime...what a woman!

i went back into forbidden planet today to check how they were selling and there was still a good few left, it only looked they had sold a few which is crappy, I'm so ashamed of my fellow Dubliners!

Yeah, Diamond did it again. Two of the comics I was supposed to get didn't show up today, and Buffy was one of them (the other being Civil War: Confessions).

I CALLED THAT ONE!!! arrgh!
