Darla and Spike's interactions

Darla and Spike rode along with Drusilla and Angelus pillaging Europe for a good long while, yet in flashbacks I swear I think I've only seen the two of them have two words toward each other. So I was wondering what you think their relationship was like and how they interacted?

Darla didn't seem fond of Spike, in some flashbacks she seems downright disgusted by him. I always got the impression that she only tolerated him being around because Dru and Angelus liked having him there.

I agree with [MENTION=10582]brinkster130[/MENTION]. Darla had sort of a "holier than thou" attitude towards him. Obviously she has good taste in men!

To me it seemed that Darla found William/Spike (whatever) incredibly tedious. So, we have that in common. 😀 😉

I think she respected him. I don't think she just accepted him. If so Darla was powerfull enough to kick him out of the team. I mean if she wanted Dru and Angel to hate Spike I think she had enough influence and intelligent to to so.

Darla wasn't fond of Spike for several reasons:

-Spike was the weakest link. She didn't respect him; he'd only come to join the "most powerful" vampire clan because Dru created him in order to have a mate of her own--something Darla wasn't too pleased about in the first place.

-Darla was repulsed by William when saw him sobbing and fumbling his papers in the street and I'm sure, to quote Spike, she didn't "really feature him living forever."

-Early, newly vamped Spike was probably extremely annoying from the point of view of an all-mighty female vampire with no tolerance for anyone who exhibits "weakness" or attempts rebellion--two characteristics Spike possessed in those early days. Loving Drusilla and being crushed over her infidelity made him appear extremely weak as a vampire; how could Darla respect that? Then, there was his constant need to start brawls, drawing attention to the four of them so that they couldn't live the lifestyle they, (really Darla) wanted.

Maybe the very things that made Spike unique, his sense of loyalty and his ability to feel love for another being and consider their wishes and welfare before his own, were the things that repulsed Darla. Certainly it was illustrated, time and again, that she felt none of those emotions. Even her so called affection for "her boy" seemed to me to be more possessiveness and pride in just how evil and despicable Angelus, as her offspring and protege, was. Certainly, once he got his soul and was no longer eager to rape, torture, and murder to her satisfaction, she not only lost interest in him, she actually threw him out.

In a strange way, Darla's disapproval of Spike could actually be seen as a positive character assessment.

Darla looks at Spike, as a noblewoman aristocratic would look at a poor beggar. More or less as Cecily sees William. He is an inferior being.

I quite agree with this actually, I mean I'm kind of on Darla's side here (😉), but to me she always seemed to turn down her nose at Spike for the things mentioned above by White Avenger. No doubt she viewed these 'weaknesses' (to a vampire) as repulsive, as is also clear by how she 'raised' Angelus and later threw him out.

She just barely seemed to tolerate him, in fact I'm sure that in part she only did because to start she wasn't that fond of their duo becoming a trio with crazy Dru. She seemed to have a certain fondness for Drusilla, especially later, but that to me seemed to merely be an arrangement of necessity as she went along with Angelus whims at times and later on felt lonely due to his abscence.
Spike took Dru off their hands in a way and I'm sure that Darla to some degree was relieved about that.
