I haven't seen their fight in ages, but I seem to remember thinking Darla had Buffy dead to rights until Angel stepped in.

If Angel had said he wouldn't take sides there, do you think Darla could have killed Buffy?
 
I certainly don't think it's inconceivable. Buffy in S1 is hardly an exceptional fighter. She doesn't really take a noticeable step up until she drowns and comes back against The Master. Prior to that she's certainly not "bad", but she's not even remotely close to the fighter she becomes later on in the series. I mean, Luke pummels her in the first episode, and while she defeats him in "The Harvest", it's more due to Luke's remarkable stupidity then to Buffy's fighting capacities. She's totally unprepared for The Master when she arrives in his lair (perfect example of dumb Buffy there).

So yeah, without Angel's intervention I could see Darla being able to kill Buffy at that point in time. Later in the series? I don't think so, but then, yes.
 
I don't think Darla could have killed Buffy. Well she could have but I think its unlikely. I agree with Robb that Buffy wasn't the fighter she would turn out to be yet but she was still skilled and crafty enough to handle Darla.

Yes I think so but only because she had those guns. It wasn't hand to hand combat when that happened in the 1st episode Buffy manhandled her and then Luke stepped in.

Taking into account all we eventually find out about Darla, I think she could have taken her in season 1.

As the others said, mainly cuz Buffy wasn't as skilled at that time.
 
I think there were several instances when - were it not for the help from her friends - buffy would have been killed. This is likely one of them.
