Darla's missing hundred years

We see nothing of Darla in between the Boxer Rebellion ('last time, it was kimonos') and Sunnydale, 1997, where she's back with the Order of Aurelius and a crushing speech impediment ('you're shick, and you'll always be shick').

What do you think Darla did during the intervening years? I think the writers did a good bit of backstory in having the Master sire her, thus explaining her allegiance to the Master, but I always found it unlikely that such a spectacularly independent character would willingly be a demagogue's toady. What do you think brought her back to the Master's 'Order'?

I imagine she was out and about, traveling, eating people with fervor, and "painting the town red" with Drusilla and Spike. I definitely saw her as the traveling type.

Well, I doubt the writing team planned that she would become such a big character later on... Because she seemed like a random vamp in season 1. Even when we found out she had been with Angel, it was weird. Maybe it's that schoolgirl outfit but Darla in BtVS compared to in Angel(and flashbacks) is a world of difference...

I don't even know why she would come back to 'the Master'. Seriously I can't believe that vampire didn't have a name. Cheesy!

I remember someone once said that the relationshp between The Master and Luke came off as S&M homo-erotic. One of the main villains on Doctor Who self-named himself The Master.

I can see her going back to him. She was with him for two hundred years before siring Angelus and even then it took awhile for Angelus to get her to leave with him and stop living with The Master underground. She continued visiting The Master over a century after she sired Angelus. Remember what he said to Spike? "You know Darla. Master's Pet." Of course when Angelus is out of her life due to having a soul again she would revert back to being The Master's favorite follower.

I don't agree with the 'not cheesy' part but you just reminded me of something. Who was Luke? I mean... he mentionned he fought a slayer WAAAY before. So he must have been as old as Spike at least, if not more. But we never had any backstory on him, he was just cannon fodder, lol. I thought it was weird to play it out like Luke had been with 'The Master' for a while if they just wanted to kill him right away.

I agree, but also remember that they wanted to prove a point... By having Buffy kill off an all-powerful vampire like Luke, it was establishing early on that Buffy could totally kick ass. 🙂

Actually, Luke just recognized that Buffy might be a Slayer by how well she held her own against him. He says that he hadn't fought someone and had that person still live since 1843 and that was only because the guy caught him sleeping. He was older than Spike. I wouldn't be surprised if he was older than Angelus. I think that having Buffy kill (and mock while she was at it) a badass like Luke was to show that Buffy was going to be a unique Slayer. She ended up killing a thousand plus year old vampire with extrasensory abilities (The Master) the third time she fought him three months after moving to Sunnydale. In Teacher's Pet Angel gets injured by that Fork Guy vamp and makes him sound really tough while Buffy easily captures him, ties him up, and uses him as a guide dog to sniff out the Giant Preying She-Mantis which she then kills.

What the! I was sure I heard him say last time he fought a slayer was in 1843, didn't remember the part with catching him asleep!

Actually he's not very bad ass, he felt cliche and stupid, lol! I can't help myself but recognize the actor playing him each time(can't remember the name right now) and how bad he was in every show or movie I saw him in, hahaha! Damn... the first season sure had some cheesy villains. But I got to admit Buffy always played on that cheesy part 😛

Well since Buffy was originally created to restore the honor of the poor blonde chick who always got the axe in old Slasher movies it isn't so strange that there's is a taste of cheesiness. I think that's part of the charm of season 1 especially.

As for Darla I can see why she would go back to the Master (who probably earned the name 'Master' by being vicious and brutal and was not called so in the very beginning of his undead life)
In Darla/Angelus flashbacks she does seem to genuinely look up to him like a father figure. Her leaving with Angelus I see as a bit of a rebellious era for her, and once it ended she eventually returned to "daddy" with her tail between her legs.

I too see her as a travelling type though so I think she roamed a lot but had the Master as a 'home base' so to speak. I think loosing Angelus was hard on her, it wasn't as if she just went out and found herself another stud-muffin to travel the world with.

He probably did have a name. Back in the day.
But imagine for how long he must have been a vampire to be permantely bumpy and fanged... it's not so hard to believe that he shed that old 'human' name or whatever alias he previously held in order to further a more powerful image of himself.

By October 1934, Darla is living in Berlin, Germany.

In September 1943, Darla moves to England.

By 1959, Darla moves to Sunnydale, with The Master.

But I doubt, that she already came that early (1959) to Sunnydale.

Maybe she travelled with Spike and Drusilla for some odd years, but I can see her getting easily fed up with and leaving them. How she got to her S1 persona, that I have no explanation for, other than her not having this kind of backstory back then.

Possible, it seems weird to me as well, it can only be from a novel, if it's correct, but in the series, no one ever mention anything between 1900 and 1997 according to her....however, but it's a pity, that those 97 years never ever been mention....

Once she lost Angelus, I imagine hanging out with Dru and Spike got old after a while. I am sure she went her own way, had her own adventures, no doubt slept with her share of other male vamps. But probably even Darla eventually felt the need for "Family" or a support group or whatever, and rejoined her old master.
