Part One
"Things didn't go the way you planned, did they?" Lindsey asked.
Darla glanced over at him, with thinly veiled contempt. "Everything's going exactly according to schedule. You see, dear Lindsey, someone who plans well, also plans for the possibility of minor difficulties occurring along the way. I encountered one earlier this evening, but I also know how to make this difficulty work for me." She smiled, and walked over to the bar, pouring herself a scotch.
"Care to share your wisdom with a lower being, Darla?" he requested.
She glanced over at him, and said, "You want Angelus, right?"
Lindsey nodded. "Wolfram and Hart want Angelus, and yourself, to come to work with us." He paused, and walked over next to her, to pour himself a drink. "Notice I didn't say 'for us', because I do realize that none of us can even compare to your intellects."
Darla laughed, a deep, throaty laugh that Lindsey suspected had gained her more admirers than anything else in her arsenal. "Oh, you're good, Boy," she said. She walked over to him, and ran her hands up over his chest, pressing herself against him. "Quite the flatterer. You'd make a fine vampire, but I imagine you've heard that before?"
"You're not the first vampire, or in your case ex-vampire, who's mentioned something to that effect," Lindsey replied with a smile. He'd chosen the wrong words, he realized too late. She pulled away from him, her expression darkened. He sighed, "I'm sorry. That bothers you, doesn't it? Not being a vampire anymore, I mean."
"I don't particularly like the concept of growing old," Darla admitted. "But after Angel proved that he had no qualms with sending me to hell, it would have been stupid of you to bring me back again as a vampire again. This condition, though, is only temporary. I know My Boy will remedy it very soon."
"I find it amazing that you're so confident," Lindsey said. "Still, after what happened."
"I know My Darling Boy," Darla said with a smile. "He could have killed me earlier tonight, Lindsey. But he didn't. Do you know why?"
"Because you're human?" Lindsey offered.
"No, silly," Darla rolled her eyes at him. "It wasn't Angel who kidnapped me, it was Angelus. He wanted me, and Angel knew that. But Angel didn't realize why Angelus wanted at me." She smirked with satisfaction. "Oh, but he knows now. And knowing it probably torments him to no end."
Hyperion Hotel
Angel sat alone in the dark, in the room which had been his home almost fifty years earlier. He'd chosen the room for many reasons, one of which being to remind himself of all he had to atone for. His confronatation earlier that night with Darla had thrown him. He'd pretended that it hadn't, but she hadn't been fooled. He knew that. It was always games with them. Always had been, always would be.
Well, at least now I know I'm not losing my mind.... Right? He'd thought that was the reason for the dreams, at first. He'd heard of the madness before, it had overtaken other vampires. It was one thing that kept their population depleted, more so than Slayers. Vampires never changed. They stayed the same, while the world around them changed. Eventually it would drive some mad because they couldn't handle it, they couldn't adapt. You would hear stories about a vampire that had taken a holy water bath, or had decided to watch the sunrise.
So when he'd started dreaming about Darla, he'd come to the conclusion that it was his turn. This was the onset of his madness and it only seemed fitting. After all, he'd committed the ultimate crime in the vampire community. He'd slain his sire and sent her to hell. Now it was time for him to join her.
So as he'd felt himself slowly slipping into the darkness, he'd wondered how much longer he could hold out before he had to end it. When he'd scared Cordelia into thinking he might bite her, he'd known it was time. He'd planned to watch the sun come up the next morning.
That night, as he was walking the streets one last time, he'd seen her. Just a glimpse on a crowded street. But in that moment everything had come crashing into place. She'd been the reason for his dreams. He may be going insane, but she was the cause. And that meant that maybe it could be stopped.
And then, as if he wasn't struggling hard enough to hold onto his sanity, he'd found out Darla was human! "IT'S NOT FAIR, DAMNIT!" he yelled now, hoping the Powers could hear him. "I've fought on the side of good for four years, and FOR WHAT? TO SEE MY BITCH OF A SIRE GET WHAT I WANT MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE ON THIS EARTH?!" He stood and punched his hand through the wall. "WHY!!!!!" he roared.
As always, he received no answer. As Darla had said, God didn't want him. As if he hadn't known that already. As if it truly mattered to him. What Darla had failed to understand was that his motives weren't as pure as that. No, the real reason he kept fighting, to gain that redemption, was because of the hope that someday he'd finally be free to love Buffy again.
But when he'd found out Darla was now human, it had been a temptation almost too much to resist. He'd seriously considered finding Lindsey, or whoever at Wolfram and Hart was responsible for returning Darla, so he could scare them into making him human also. He'd managed to stop himself from doing that, however. He'd told himself that his search for redemption wouldn't be fulfilled if he cheated his way into humanity. How could he go to Buffy that way? So he'd ignored the urge, and instead concentrated on the problem at hand.
The problem at hand being Darla. He hadn't handled that one too well, though. He'd kidnapped his sire, and dragged her to the basement of the water tower. And he wasn't sure what he had been hoping to accomplish with that move. No, that wasn't quite true. He knew why; he'd planned to let Angelus out to play. He'd been hoping that the demon would kill her, and then they'd both be rid of her. And if he'd been unable to let Angelus actually kill her, he'd hoped that at least he'd scare her into giving him some information as to who at Wolfram and Hart was behind this and what their ultimate plan was.
Unfortunately, he hadn't gotten anything he'd wanted. Instead he had only succeeded in playing into Darla's hand. He hadn't scared her, far from it. Having access to Angelus, that was what she had wanted all along.
And Angel had realized something else, something that he hadn't even contemplated as a possibility. Something that he'd denied adamantly, while fearing she saw the truth behind the lie. The reason Angelus hadn't killed Darla, had been because he loved her.
And that had scared Angel more than anything else had in the past few weeks. He was afraid he wouldn't win this one. He was afraid that with Darla's help, Angelus would break free of the cage he'd locked him in and take over. I can't let that happen.
Which was why he was sitting in his old room, at four a.m., facing the east window with the curtains pulled wide open.
