Part 37
"Just shut up," Angelus repeated as he looked over his instruments of torture sitting on the table. "Contrary to your opinion of me, I'm not stupid. I wasn't oblivious to the attraction between the two of you. But I was assuming you would be smart enough to withstand the urge. I thought you wouldn't test me like this. At the very least, I thought it would be a while before I had to discipline you."
He grabbed a black leather whip and threw it to Spike. "But I guess I was wrong. So one last question, Lindsey. Are you brain-damaged, or were you aware that you were tempting my anger by being with Darla?"
Lindsey looked at him evenly. "I did think you might be jealous."
Angelus stared at him a moment in shock. "JEALOUS?!" He yelled. He walked over to Lindsey and Spike stepped out of his way as he drew near. "Jealous of you?" he asked calmly. He smiled, "You've got quite an ego on you, Boy, if you think you're any competition for Darla's affections. Darla made a choice two centuries ago when she turned me and she's never changed her mind about that choice. I'm what she wants, what she needs."
"Obviously you're not, if she turned to me tonight," Lindsey replied. He ignored the flash of gold in Angelus eyes and continued. It appeared he was going to be tortured anyway, so he might as well try to get Angelus to see the reality of the situation. "There must have been something missing, Angelus. Something she needed that I could give her and you couldn't ... or just wouldn't. And I know what it is. I care about her, and I don't try to hide that fact. I'm not afraid to tell her. Unlike you; you treat her like your property--"
Angelus punched Lindsey in the nose and smiled when he heard the bones break. He was relieved it had served to shut him up. "You don't know the first thing about having a mate. It's not simpering professions of love, Lindsey. It's about belonging to each other; and knowing that no matter who else you ****, you are still bound to only one for all eternity. You claim there must be something missing in my relationship with Darla? Well, you're right. What's missing is the Angelus who used to concede to her demands. But she'll get over it. As for how I treat her, you don't know me. You don't know how I show my affections. Darla knows, though, and that's all that matters."
"If she knew, she wouldn't be terrified she was going to lose you!" Lindsey interrupted him. "Tonight with me was about that. She needed to feel like she was the only one that mattered, and I gave that to her tonight. She needed someone to make her feel like she was the only one he wanted. You don't do that; you **** everything that moves. So she looked for a little stability with me... and I think she found it."
Angelus clamped his hand around Lindsey's throat and squeezed. He held back just enough to keep from breaking the boy's neck. He was amazed when Lindsey didn't start fighting for breath; that had always been Spike's reaction. Oh well, it still hurts; even if he's managed to overcome his breathing instinct so soon.
"You think, just because you ****ed her, that you know her? You know what she felt tonight? You don't." Angelus released Lindsey's throat and circled around to stand behind him. Just inches away, not even touching him though. He knew it was driving Lindsey crazy, not being able to see him and wondering what he'd do next.
"You say she cares about you?" Angelus asked, his lips grazing Lindsey's ear. He smirked over at Spike when Lindsey shuddered. Spike grinned back, knowing well the mindgame Angelus was playing. "You couldn't be farther from the truth, Childe," Angelus continued. "Darla's motives in being with you weren't pure. It's all about this game that Darla and I play." He ran his hand lightly down Lindsey's spine then and chuckled when Lindsey tried to jerk away. "We've been playing the same game for years. She gets mad when I don't do exactly what she wants, so she takes a lover. There wasn't any deep, profound reason that she chose you as that lover, either," he added as he moved to stand in front of Lindsey again. "She's very fickle when it comes to who he ... or she... is. She probably would've had Dru, or one of the bodyguards, if the thought had occurred to her instead. They don't matter, what matters is the attempt to make me jealous. But the attempt always fails, because she still comes back to me at the end of the day.
"So you think you're something special?" Angelus asked, his arms crossed in front of him now. "You aren't, Boy. You are nothing. If I were to dust you, she'd get over it in no time at all. You were just a distraction, one that I've put a stop to. She'll abide by my wishes, too, she'll never go near you again. Because she really only wants me. I am the only thing Darla cares about. She's mine and always has been. And nobody, especially not you, will ever change that."
Lindsey just shrugged his shoulders. Something that wasn't easy in the chains. "If you believe that, why am I here?"
Angelus smiled. "Because here beginneth the lesson," Angelus said. "Don't touch what's mine." He hopped up to sit on the table and nodded at Spike. "All right, Spike."
Spike grinned and cracked the whip in the air a few times to get the feel of it. He chuckled when Lindsey flinched each time. He looked back over at Angelus. "I'm almost afraid this is gonna be too easy."
Angelus smiled. "Just make him scream, Spike."
Spike nodded and turned back to Lindsey, "You heard our sire," he said with a leer. "Scream loud, Lindsey Boy. I, for one, love to hear the screams when I'm torturing someone. And another incentive for you: it'll make Angelus happy. The happier he is, the sooner he'll let you go. Oh, and one more thing," he added as he circled Lindsey slowly. "Angelus has this thing, he likes it when you count the lashes. Proves you're paying attention and all."
Lindsey gritted his teeth, waiting for the first blow. He watched Spike circle him like a vulture. Round and round he goes, where he stops, nobody knows Lindsey chuckled when the old rhyme popped into his head suddenly.
He gasped when he felt the sting of the whip across his lower back. He fought back the tears, knowing the night had only just begun.
"Count," he heard Spike growl.
Lindsey kept silent. He'd been part of Wolfram and Hart for years; if Spike thought he was evil, he'd be surprised at how well Lindsey could stand that evil directed at him. He wasn't that easily broken. He refused to look at Angelus, he wouldn't give the older vampire the satisfaction. He set his gaze on the wall directly across from him. He tried to brace himself for the next blow. Spike came into his line of vision and then Lindsey saw him strike with the whip. Lindsey threw himself backward just enough to dodge the whip. He burst out laughing at Spike's shocked expression.
Spike's eyes narrowed. "Cheeky *******," he growled. Then he struck again, catching Lindsey across the stomach. Lindsey yelled at that, as Spike had put his entire strength into the blow. Spike smiled as he saw the nice cut in the boy's skin, just starting to bleed.
"Count," Spike ordered.
Lindsey raised his eyes to meet Spike's but still didn't say a word.
"Son of a bitch," Spike sighed. Then he struck five consecutive times, leaving bloody trails across Lindsey's chest. "****ING COUNT, ASSHOLE!" Spike yelled. "ONE!" He added.
He circled around and caught Lindsey across the back of the legs. "ONE!" He yelled. He whipped him three more times across his back. "ONE! ONE! ONE!" He yelled. He circled around to within inches of Lindsey's face. "You sensing a pattern here, yet?" He asked calmly. "The count doesn't go on, until you start obeying. I can go on for hours, I've been trained by the master over there. I doubt you can, but you're welcome to try."
He then moved slowly around Lindsey, reigning blows down on every piece of unmarked skin he could find.
"Just shut up," Angelus repeated as he looked over his instruments of torture sitting on the table. "Contrary to your opinion of me, I'm not stupid.
