Actor David Carradine Dead at 72

Thursday, June 04, 2009

“Kung Fu” star David Carradine was found dead in a Bangkok hotel room Thursday, his manager told FOX News. While the cause of death has yet to be determined, a Thai newspaper claims the actor died in an apparent suicide.

Chuck Binder, Carradine's manager, told FOXNews.com Thursday that the actor, 72, was staying in Bangkok while shooting a movie. When a producer went to his luxury hotel room, he discovered that the actor had died.

Binder told FOXNews.com Thursday that the cause of death is "under investigation." While there have been conflicting reports as to the nature of Carradine's death, Thai newspaper The Nation is claiming that an unidentified Thai police source said the actor was found hung in his hotel room from curtain rope in an apparent suicide.

The paper said Carradine had been staying at the hotel since Tuesday but could not be contacted after he failed to appear for a meal with the rest of the film crew on Wednesday. His body was later found by a hotel maid at 10 a.m. Thursday morning. The name of the movie was not immediately available.

It said a preliminary police investigation found that he had hanged himself with a cord used with the room's curtains. It cited police as saying he had been dead at least 12 hours and there was no sign that he had been assaulted.

A police officer at Bangkok's Lumpini precinct station would not confirm the identity of the dead man to The Associated Press, but said the luxury Swissotel Nai Lert Park hotel had reported that a male guest killed himself there.

A statement on behalf of his family has yet to be released, but Binder called the death "shocking and sad."

Carradine was a leading member of a venerable Hollywood acting family that included his father, character actor John Carradine, and brother Keith.

In all, he appeared in more than 100 feature films with such directors as Martin Scorsese, Ingmar Bergman and Hal Ashby.

But he was best known for his role as Kwai Chang Caine, a Shaolin priest traveling the 1800s American frontier West in the TV series "Kung Fu," which aired in 1972-75.

He reprised the role in a mid-1980s TV movie and played Caine's grandson in the 1990s syndicated series "Kung Fu: The Legend Continues."

He returned to the top in recent years as the title character in Quentin Tarantino's two-part saga "Kill Bill."

Rest in peace, Mr. Carradine.

Wow, we have this newssite as our homepage and it's standing in front of it and I was like "wtf?"... I don't really know him from that Kung Fu thing but I do know him from Charmed and Kill Bill... RIP!

I knew him from Charmed, Kill Bill, and Lizzie M.
This is truly sad news. David was one of my favorite actors as a young man, and also one of the main reasons that I returned to study the martial arts after my time in the Navy. Ironically, I was just watching "The Silent Flute" not long ago and wondering if David still practiced kung fu.

Rest in peace, David. You will be remembered.

Wow - major shock! That's terrible.. RIP.

I don't know if I want to know what other parts of his body had cord 'round them.. Maybe it was just his wrists or something?

Could be. Maybe he was into autoerotic asphyxiation, like Michael Hutchence (from INXS) died from. He was also found in his hotel room, naked, and had been wrapping things around his neck.
The two deaths seem very similar.

That's so sad. I really like him on Kill Bill. And he died in my country. I gotta read newspapers seriously when I fly back. It's even sadder when his death is mysterious like this.

RIP David. 🙁

Yeah.. I was thinking of Michael Hutchence too.. Hmm, they do seem similar. Do you think it might have been an accidental death then?

Yeah I think its very possible. I havnt heard any mention of a note or anything yet.
They thought Michael Hutchence death was a suicide at first too.

I used to watch Kung Fu with my father every Saturday when I was a child. This is tragic.

RIP Sir.

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- David Carradine's wife and his manager disputed suggestions that the actor's death was a suicide, while a source in Bangkok, Thailand, said the actor's neck and genitals were found bound with rope.

David Carradine was the star of the 1970s TV series, "Kung Fu," and appeared in more than 100 films.

Bangkok police said Carradine was found hanging by a nylon rope in a Bangkok hotel room closet Thursday morning.

A member of the emergency crew who was called to the hotel after a maid found Carradine told CNN that a yellow nylon rope was tied around the actor's neck and a black rope was around his genitals. The source asked not to be identified.

"I do not know if you want to call it accidental," Chuck Binder, Carradine's manager, told CNN's Larry King on Thursday. He said Carradine's career was on a roll and his life was on a resurgence.

Binder said a producer of the movie, "Stretch," which Carradine was to act in, called him from Thailand to tell him what was happening there.

"I do not want to get in the middle of this whole investigation, but this guy said to me for sure there was foul play," Binder said.

Actor Michael Madsen told King that the one thing Carradine's wife, Annie Bierman, wanted everyone to know is, "David was not suicidal."

Investigators found no sign of a forced entry into Carradine's room, Bangkok Police Lt. Colonel Pirom Chanpirom said.

An autopsy was being conducted at a Bangkok hospital, but no results would be available for another day, Chanpirom said.

Modern audiences may best know Carradine as "Bill" in Quentin Tarantino's "Kill Bill" films. He earned a 2005 Golden Globe nomination for his role in the second movie in the two-part saga.

Tarantino, also appearing on "Larry King Live," called Carradine one of "Hollywood's great mad geniuses."

"He was a rock star at the time 'Kung Fu' came out," Tarantino said, holding up a vintage metal lunch box with an image from the popular show.

"I'm in shock," he said.

Carradine's career included more than 100 feature films, two dozen television movies, and theater work, according to the Internet Movie Database.

"He was clearly an actor who followed his own path," said Leah Rozen, movie critic for People magazine. See photos of some of his notable roles »

"He was never a guy who talked a whole lot. You knew, as an actor, the characters he played, you knew they had a past, you knew there was probably some unhappiness there, but he wasn't going to talk about it."

Carradine was nominated for a Golden Globe for his role as folk music legend Woody Guthrie in the 1976 movie "Bound for Glory," according to a biography on his official Web site.

He also made appearances in television series such as "Gunsmoke" and "Alfred Hitchcock Presents." His first starring role in a series was as the title character in "Shane" in 1966. iReport: Share memories of David Carradine

Carradine was married five times and divorced four, according to People magazine.

He was the son of John Carradine, a character actor who appeared in hundreds of films, plays and television episodes.

"David's career as an artist did not begin on the stage, though some of his early career was on and off Broadway. His earliest work was as a sculptor and painter," Carradine's official Web site says.

The site also includes an "Art Bio," in which the actor opened up about his life.

"I've always had an especially hard time with everything I've tried to do," Carradine wrote.

"I've made it pretty big as an actor in spite of being terminally shy. ... Invariably, I had huge obstacles to overcome in anything I tried. Had to work against my genes to achieve my dreams."

Poor guy.
But I think this helps prove my theory that it was autoerotic asphyxiation. Mark my words.

Autoerotic asphyxiation, or a sex act gone wrong. Either way, what a horrible way to die. I'll remember him for his role as Bill in the Kill Bill films, as well as a strange movie called Evil Toons (in which he delivered an odd, memorable performance).

He was in a movie I saw on TV tonight called How To Rob a Bank. It actually didnt show him until the end, he was just a voice on the phone, but as soon as I heard it I knew it was him haha hes got a very recognizable voice. Nick Stahl, Leo Fitzpatrick, and Gavin Rosedale were also in it. It was actually decent. Ive never heard of it before.
