Ok, so I'm generally a David Lynch fan - Dune....my ALL TIME favorite movie EVER, Blue Velvet...etc. Anyway, I haven't seen Mulholland Dr. yet (cuz I'm a slacker) but I've been reading reviews everywhere for it. You get such a mixed bag with this film.......some think it's nuts, some think it's genius. What is everyone's take?
 
I generally lack the grey matter necessary to be able to comprehend and decipher many of David Lynch's films.
Once in a while he'll put something out that's easier to follow and enjoyable, such as The Elephant Man (1980) , the Twin Peaks series (1990), Dune (1984), Blue Velvet (1986), and Wild at Heart (1990).

But then there are those Lynch movies that are just weird...weird...WEIRD, and make no sense to me at all, such as Eraserhead (1977), Lost Highway (1997), and the previously mentioned Mulholland Dr. (2001)

For the most part, the first three quarters of Mulholland Dr. can be figured out...as it is mainly just out of sequence, and all one need do is rearrange it into a cohesive order. But it's the final quarter of the movie that just ruins the film for me, because that's when it abruptly skews into something completely incomprehendable. I have this movie on DVD and after repeated viewings, this tired old brain STILL can't figure it out.

You should take a look at it though, Miffed67. This movie is not for everyone, but perhaps you could be one of the lucky few to be able to understand what's going on...and get some enjoyment out of this film. Give it a try. Let us know what ya think.
 
Oooo, I love Lost Highway, I had forgotten about that one.

My main reason for wanting to see it is....David Lynch film. A lot of people say they have trouble following it, but then others say it's perfectly sensible to them. I don't know if they're left-brainers vs. right-brainers or what.....I tend toward right-brainism, so.....maybe that would help? Maybe hinder? Who knows. I'm a huge fan of Memento, tho, and people said the same things about that movie, too.

I'll probably rent it next weekend....will certainly give my impressions if I do. Thanks, OMIII!
 
Mulholland Drive is particularly odd and schizophrenic because it started out as a TV pilot for ABC"”then it got canned and Lynch took the TV show footage that was shot and finished it off as a nutty little Lynchian art film. I've only seen bits of it, but I've got a bargain bin copy on video. Must watch.

The Straight Story is my fave Lynch film as the moment. Not typically Lynchian, but engrossing"”like most things he does.
 
I'm a big fan of the Twin Peaks series. David Lynch definitely has a wild imagination and a wonderful knack for putting it on the screen. I haven't had the chance to watch any of his other pieces but I'm betting they're worth a look. If I get the chance, I'll be sure to see them all.
 
Actually, ABC screwed over Twin Peaks as well"”insisting that Laura Palmer's murder be "solved" in the second season. Lynch wanted to keep it a mystery for the entire run of the show. The series started to tank when ABC started to seriously meddle with it.

But just look at the current TV landscape and see how influential he was. The X-Files, Lost, Alias, even Desperate Housewives"”all owe a huge debt to Lynch. Oh yeah, and Joss too. Just in terms of epic, mysterious arcs and quirky, eccentric characters. And the old "is it a drama, a comedy, a mystery? What is it exactly?" vibe...
 
I consider my self a huge Lynch fan, but to be honest... I haven't seen that many of his movies, at least not in years, so I don't remember that much. Twin Peaks has always been my number one favourite TV serious though (before Buffy, now it's the second best). I have seen the first season of Twin Peaks oh so many times, and it never gets the least bit boring.

About Mulholland Dr., I really love that movie. Yes, there are some parts I don't understand, I am not that into the analyzing of weird movies thing (ok I am but whatever), but I still think it's a really good movie, and definitely worth seeing (many times).
 
And see, therein lies my quandary, LOL! The people that LOVE it, REALLY love it....and the rest are like.....meh! I think I'm a big enough fan to like it, even if I don't understand it. Besides that, it would at least be something to talk about! I don't have to understand every little nuance, because that's the fun of discussion and viewing it several times. You pick up on stuff you missed, and in talking it over with others, you get thier impressions, too.

Reading this I think you'd like the movie in the same way I do. I don't actually love it, but I really like it and it's not as weird as some people say. Even if some parts might be confusing, there are still reasons to see the movie even if you don't want to analyze every single bit of it.. And if you do want to analyze... more fun for you 😉
