David Speaks Out

Read here what David has to say about the cancellation of the show, the efforts of the fans to save it, and what he thinks of reprising his role as Angel in a possible ANGEL movie.

by Shawna Malcom

Angel may be a tortured 245-year-old vampire with a soul, but his portrayer, David Boreanaz, is about as angst-free as actors come. As series creator Joss Whedon once told TV Guide, "David takes things in stride, and those of us who don't know how to stride are confused." During a break in shooting Angel's series finale (airing May 19 at 9 pm/ET), the ever-cool 33-year-old actor discussed why he's relieved to see his 5-year-old WB drama bite it, how he feels about star-crossed love Buffy's (Sarah Michelle Gellar) absence, and the chance he'll resurrect Angel for those rumored TV or DVD movies.

TV Guide Online: How did you get the cancellation news?

David Boreanaz: Joss came to set and told me. I said, "OK, fine." There were no tears. There was just a moment of congratulating him on a successful run of five seasons.

TVGO: You weren't at all upset?

Boreanaz: I don't wanna sound like I was cheering, but when Joss broke the news, it was almost more like the burden of pressure came off me after five years. I mean, it's a lot of responsibility [carrying a show], and you don't realize how much that is until they say it's done and then you can breathe. So there's some really nice light that came into my life. I'm in a really great place about it.

TVGO: Most actors would be stressing about being out of work.

Boreanaz: It's not worth it to get too stressed. [Laughs] What can I do, man? Look, it's a f---in' show, and it was a great experience. I think we can be very proud of what we've accomplished. Now, you just move forward.

TVGO: Your fans are having a harder time doing that.

Boreanaz: Yeah, it's a disappointment for them. They've been so into the show this year. For them, I think it's a really bad thing. But this kind of stuff happens everyday, and I think you have to realize that.

TVGO: What did you think of their "Save Angel" campaign?

Boreanaz: I think it's very cool. It's a really good testimony to how strong the show is and how committed they are [to] the universe Joss created.

TVGO: A lot of us were disappointed to hear Sarah won't pop up in the finale. How do you feel about it?

Boreanaz: You know, I went over to her finale and she said she would come over to mine. It would've been nice to have her over here. I guess it was Joss's decision. He wrapped it up the way he wanted to. I'll just leave it at that.

TVGO: What do you think of how the show's wrapped up?

Boreanaz: I'm comfortable with the way they're ending it. It's very open-ended. The title of the episode is "Not Fade Away," which I dig [because] that's a Grateful Dead tune. It goes out fighting, which I think is great.

TVGO: There are rumors we haven't seen the last of Angel, that there might be some TV or DVD movies in the future. Would you come back to the character?

Boreanaz: [Laughs] I don't think I will, no.

TVGO: Seriously?

Boreanaz: Yeah. The only way I would do any kind of loose-end wrapping up would be if the pieces were right, and if they decided to do it on a different, higher level, like a film. Joss is doing Serenity [the feature based on his 2002 short-lived Fox series Firefly], and we'll see how that goes for him. If they decided to do that with Angel and if the pieces were right, fine. But you never know where everyone is in their lives at that moment.

TVGO: Where do you see yourself going from here?

Boreanaz: Shooting a film with Martin Scorcese off the coast of Africa. [Laughs] F---, why not, man? Give me a call, Scorcese. I'm open!

TVGO: Are you reading scripts?

Boreanaz: I haven't thought about it. I have one project that looks like it's gonna happen, but I can't talk about it yet. I have some offers coming in. But most importantly, I'm just gonna chill and not do much of anything. I'm not in a rush. I'm in a beautiful position because I don't have to worry about a hiatus. I'm free, and I'm very excited about the opportunities that lay ahead.

intresting interview, except now people can stop b-ing about SMG and her role as not returning to Buffy. But it looks like we wont be seeing the charecter of Angel any time soon agian in the future, unless their is a Buffy/Angel big screen movie.

Wow....anyone sensing some Magui and Ana bitterness...YIKES!

I understand both of you-David seems fairly giddy about this, and reading him like that makes me smile 😀 But I still feel like I got punched in the gut when I read that line about him not coming back to play Angel.

I don't know. My guess is if another season was in the cards he would have stepped up to the plate (forgive the baseball lingo). Since it didn't turn out that way he was ready to pick up and move on. And why shouldn't he ? He has a wonderful wife, child, talent, fanbase, and a can-do attitude. Bravo. Should he have gotten all depressed and sullen ? Ranting against the injustice of it all ? That's what WE are here for ::uh:: For him to say anything other than what he did would make him look like s-u-c-h a poor sport and you know what ? He's not a poor sport. He is happy to have had such a nice body of work and looks foward to whatever comes next. I should only have such a good outlook on life :: party :

Magui, glad you're happy and glad that my wonderful and ever so hunka-hunky David B is happy; but is it just me or does david seem a little.... I dunno

he seems kinda mean to me like "who cares!!?" hmmm i guess im reading too much into it but it seems like he didnt give a damn about the show being cancelled but thats just what i think

Well,we don't know what he would say if Angel got picked,so...let's just not say that he's mean please😛.
Maybe he is just like that,a cheery-'I'm-never-depressed'-kind-of-person😀

On this, the day of the North American airing of the final ep. of Angel, I am in mourning and feel very very angry at DB. I know....its his life...I should move on....I don't care. I hate him right now. I hope he has as much success with his big film career as David Duchovny who is now out plugging the soon to be made X-Files movie.

That's cruel. You know what, I don't agree with his decision, but I wish him the best. People seem to forget that acting is his JOB. It's fun for him too, but just like us regular people, when we leave a job, it's for good. We don't go back and work there every so often. Angel was a step in DB's career. I wish he'd come back, but in the end, it's his choice, and it's not for us to criticize.

I agree with Jacklyn...
And anyway,he is saying this now,we don't know what he would say if The WB decided to make the movies or something like that.
Angel is over for now,you want him to cry and say 'Angel is the only bloody character I'm able to play, bring back my show!'?.
Don't get me wrong,I'm not happy because Angel ended for good, but you just can't blame David because he wants to move on...it's not like he quited during mid s5 or something like that. The show got cancelled,he can't do anything about it.

True..and I'm pretty sure than if there was another season he'd consider it as one of his options..I'll support him no matter what..It's understandable he wants to move on with his film career

I am really sorry if you all think I am mean and I never want to offend someone. But I don't know anyone IRL who can understand the pain of losing a Joss filled world so I thought I could come here and vent. I am totally grieving now and I guess that anger is much easier to deal with than pain and sadness. I feel like someone in my family has died. I feel like part of the reason I get up in the morning is gone. And I am sorry if I offended you but I needed to get my feelings out; they were making me cry in the middle of the day for no reason and lash out at people for no reason. No one IRL understands so I thought I could express myself here. I really don't wish David anything negative but he sounded so cavalier and wants us to just move on.

And he went off on SMG so strongly when she said she might not be on his finale. He said she should remember what made her career and a big part was fans. And then, he seems so insensitive to our pain when he was just lecturing her for the same thing.

I was so clinging to the idea of one or two tv movies next season and when I read his interview, the denial was shattered and so was a part of me.

Sweetie, I know exactly how you feel. I didn't mean to make it seem like we didn't know. I've been very affected by the cancellation as well, but unfortunately. There are many lives that ome into making a show this good, and their opinions and feelings really DO matter in the whole thing.

Think about me-I watch the Buffyverse to gain inspiration-it helps me write. It helps me write things that have nothing at all to do with Buffy, which to me is weird and unexplainable. And now, I'm left with the fear that the old DVD episodes won't do it for me. That I'm gonna run out of inspiration----so believe me, I understand the harsh feelings 😀

Thanks so much for understanding. I am sure your writing will continue to be great and something for you to be proud of. I have only stories and one love in my life. And he is trying so hard to understand but a part of him feels threatened by my grief. I don't feel like there is a reason to get up anymore. A reason to try when everything good is taken away from us. A world in which friends betray you and people you thought you knew, you didn't know at all. Everything good turns black and rotting.

But thank you so much, Jacklyn for caring. It really does matter!!!! *hugs*

Sweetie-life is hard and cruel, but there is ALWAYS a reason to get up in the morning. Always! 🙂 This is a funk you're going to have to pull yourself out of or it could get emotionally unhealthy. You will be fine. The Buffyverse in no way defines who you are-it just enriches it. So, now it's time to find something else that's enriching. You can do it! I know you can.

I know you are right. But I just started crying again reading your words. I have been slightly obsessed with things before (Reboot, Final Fantasy, X-Files) but nothing like this. But, please don't worry; I will cry and cry and scream and in awhile, I will be okay. And my husband IRL thought that a summer of Buffy would help so we started rewatching season 1 already. Now, if only season 7 were coming out this summer in North America.

But, again, thanks so much for being so caring. *huge hugs*
