They are and I am very lucky to have friends like you and a husband who gets why the Jossverse is so special. Depression is a horrible thing to deal with but at least I knew why I was angry and depressed. And you helped so much. *huge hugs back*

I don't think you are reading too much into it. He turned into a really arrogant b******. Joss Whedon has made him a celebrity (not that his acting is THAT good!!!) and now he says he won't be returning to the role of Angel unless it is done on a higher level. Maybe he should take some acting lessons so HE can actually take it to a higher level.
Let's wait and see how great a career he has made in a year's time. Maybe once he realises that he is not as much in demand as he thought he would be, he might want to rethink the return as Angel......in whatever form.

As for me, after reading up on some of his interviews since the show finished I am not so convinced I want him back in the part. DB - stay where you are! I'd rather have James continuing the Buffy universe. At least he knows what a great chance this is for an actor. And James is an ACTOR.

Gotta disagree with the bad acting of Db, he isnt he a really ace actor one of the best, Just watched the last Angel so Im a annoyed yet happy at DB for his decision's but its life, gotta agree with Blackarachnia he had no right to say that about SMG. Wel I hope him all the best and hopefully *prays* he will change his mind and bring Angel back to life..

Before everyone starts getting angry about this, think about what she has said and not the words used to say it.

I would not say he is one of the best actors in the Jossverse but a lot of that is character driven - I really think he is much better as Angelus.

And he did sound arrogant in some of his interviews. And he said that we, the fans, should just move on. And that was pretty insensitive.

And I agree that he will find out that his "film" career may not just take off right away. How well did the 2nd Crow movie do and that is what he has going now. And I don't think he's ever going to find the caliber of writing and directing that he did on both Buffy and Angel.

And I love JM and AA for saying that they would love to reprise their roles and that all Joss has to do is ask. It makes me respect them more. Unless he's in a new series, why not do a tv movie? It would only take 3 - 4 weeks to film and then, you keep the fans loving you. Just seems like he cut off his nose to spite his face.

If we could all understand each other better, this would be a better world.

Let's start with the entire Season 1 on Buffy. Now, that was actually painful.

He getting a bit better in Season 2 and drops the quality below 0 again at the beginning of Season 3.

He seemed to be fairly well instructed throughout Season 1 of Angel (or maybe it was just plain good writing) and then goes steadily downhill again.

And quite frankly, he never managed to get the "boss" thing across at all. His bodylanguage and facial expression in that episode where he wife guest starred gave the impression he suffered from some kind of cramps.

Going into detail would make this reply go on forever.......
 
I'll follow you with maybe Season 1 of Buffy-but that's the most I can agree on.

His turns as Angelus were amazing. Did anyone see Home and I will Remember You? Jeez! He tore my heart out!!! What about the last five minutes of Your Welcome? Any actor that can deliver such a touching scene is excellent in my book!
 
I don't know wheather I'm happy or not with reading that. But if he's happy, I'm happy, I guess. ::eyes1:: I'm going to go and sulk now. lol.But if you ask me in the last few epps of Angel, David kinda was showing as if he was getting tired of it.

When they wrote his character they didn't plan his past or future,they didn't even know if BTVS was going to have a second season and Angel was gonna be a regular,they didn't even think of Angelus!.He was just like a different character.Would normal Angel say that he is affraid of The Master when he saw Angelus mocked his nose and stuff?,Angelus wasn't affraid and knew The Master?Why would Angel be affraid?.I'll tell you why,because those stories weren't writen back then.
David performed the character they gave him to perform.Angel was a jackass in S1,okay,so DB played a jackass,it doesn'¡t make him a bad actor.

Why?,should he have acted like an evil peace of ****?,Angel is nice,he didn't need to act like Holland Manners or something like that to be a boss.

I haven't seen the ep so I can't comment of this.But I'm sure taht there's a good reason.
 
Here is an interview with JM and he is ready to move on but also recognizes what made his career and is willing and ready to go back to it. It is the lack of humility and the cavalier attitude that DB demonstrated in his interviews that really upset me and lots of other people. In one, he actually said he was glad when he heard there would not be another season. And that fans should just move on. But DB had just criticized SMG for not appreciating her fans and the show enough and for forgetting what gave her a career (when she said she wasn't going to do an ep of Angel) and that makes him a hypocrite. To me lyers and hypocrites are the worst people.

Anyway, here is JM's interview from Angel Magazine as reported by buffy.nu:

The latest issue of Angel Magazine includes an interview with James Marsters, who says he'd love to play Spike again, but feels maybe the time is right to explore other areas and parts.

"If a project was offered to me that was cool and had Spike in it, I would love to do it," he says. "It's a fabulous character, but at the same time, it seems to be over so it's a good time to move on."

"I'm excited about playing other characters. Frankly, I can't wait to show the world my brown hair, and the fact that I don't have an English accent and the fact that I don't have to be the snarky guy all the time."

I think that being grateful for what life has given you is so important. I am a teacher and don't make a lot of money but every day I get to go to a job I love, I am grateful.

You say this because you prefer James to David...but David didn't do anything wrong,...and anyway what can he do?.Angel got cancelled,there'are not gonna be movies or spinoffs...should he start crying and telling us that we shouldn't move on cuz the right thing to do is to cry forever?
 
I put the stuff about the quality of writing in brackets and meant that his acting went downhill.

An actor is only a good actor if he can carry the part and the story even if the writing is not up to its best. Mr DB still has to prove that that is what he can do - and I doubt he can.

Just another example on that note: Has anybody outside a very small, tight community ever heard of Ethan Phillips before he got the part of Neelix in Voyager? Yet, nowadays he behaves like a superstar, too good to pose for a picture with a fan.....and believe me, the guy is dead ugly without his "neelix" makeup.....

DB will end up just like that if he keeps allienating his fans in the way he has so far.

Overall I still think this discussion should continue in a year's time and we will all see where it got him. Who knows, maybe I am all wrong.....
 
Relieved and glad are two totally different things. Relieved implies the removal of large responsibility and a sense of freedom that would naturally come with the cancellation of a show. Glad implies a joyous reaction and a dislike of the show. Blackarachnia, you quoted David as being "relieved" but previously said he was "glad"-you do see how his words were taken out of context.

Can any one here tell me how stressful it is to be the star of a television show? To be in every scene and have the whole shooting schedule revolve around you? No? Well then how can you not understand his "Relief"? David is simply eager to see what his future holds. It's a better attitude than if he were to CLING-what kind of a future would he have then?

You're right. And relief is different than glad. But, I guess I would have been more carful even saying that if I were him since fans do make a huge difference in the career of an actor and he alienated lots of them. Not just me but other people I know from all over the world. They just respected him and now they feel he is a hypocrite and ungrateful for all life has given to him. How many actors would give anything for his opportunity. And it wouldn't be that huge of a commitment to do one tv movie.
Alo, he wasn't the only character on the show. By the end, there were many scenes he wasn't even in and I find it pretty arrogant that he even assumed that he "carried" the whole show. If I were one of the actors, I would be a little hurt by that. I watched to see everyone, especially after Wes and Fred joined the cast (although I cried and cried when Doyle died and didn't want him to leave - please, Doyle lovers, don't think I wanted that).

And I think that debate is healthy and that we should all remember not to take this too personally - as I learned when I first posted in this thread. Alyson really helped me to understand my feelings and that we can debate ideas and opinions without hurting each other.

I love gastropods. I keep them as pets. And we all get very passionate in our debates and that is why we keep debating. That is the kind of devotion we all have. And it is very stimulating - keeping the old brain alive. *hugs*
