I'm from England so not really sure on the American school system, so can someone it explain to me.

Dawn was 14 in S5, making her 16 when she went to the new High School, however Buffy was 16 in S1 and in her second year of High School, I'm confused? :confused2:
 
well, i don't know the american systeme either, but every child can't be born in the beginning of september.
so depending of your month of birth, you are sometimes between classes.
i was born in nov 74, and i went to school with the children born in 74, but in fact i was almost one year younger that most of them.and if i had been with the children born in 75, i would have been one of the oldest in my class;
what i mean is that there is possibility to begin high school at 15 or 16, depending of your month of birth, or so i think.
 
She could have also had to wait a year when the new high school was not technically finished being built. As far as I know, it was never explained where high school students went after the old Sunnydale high was burnt down.

I was fourteen in grade nine (freshman year). Fifteen in grade ten (sophomore). Sixteen in grade eleven (junior). And seventeen when I graduated. I have a July birthday and was one of the youngest in my class.
 
I wouldn't be surprised if Dawn had a to repeat a grade. She was having a hard time in school in S6, what with her isues of feeling abandoned by her sister and stealing. If Dawn started HS in S7 as a Freshman, but at 16, that would make sense.

Anyway, in general, if you're 15 you're a Freshman in HS. But it depends on when you're born, I think.
 
Well, usually you're a freshman in high school if your 14 years old in America and 16 years old is usually junior year. But I think Dawn was in high school already, just not Sunnydale High School.
 
Pretty sure Dawn says in All The Way in S6 that she's a freshman. 14/15 is the right age. Where she's attending isn't really said, but when she went to HS in S7 I'm assuming she was a sophomore since she was 15/16.

I thought she said she was a sophomore in S6? I know in S7 Buffy says something about her having to spend the 'next three years in high school...' doing something or another, implying she was a freshman in S7.

I don't know. The writers probably just screwed it up, lol. I mean, they wrote her like she was ten instead of 14 in S5, so who knows.
 
^ She did say she was a freshman in S6's All the Way.

I think that the high schoolers post-GD#2 had to share a school with the junior high kids until S7 when a new school was built. So she may have been a sophomore but Lessons was her first time attending a high school (a school specifically for high school students).
