Dawn having the last line

I HATED THE FACT DAWN HAD THE LAST LINE!!!!!! I'm not exactly the biggest fan of Dawn, in fact I really didn't like her at all. I thought the line was great "So what are we going to do now" I think it would have been awesome if that line was said by Giles. B/c to my understanding in the season 8 comics he and buffy attempt to rebuild the watchers council (haven't read the comics this is just what I know from season 5 of angel, anyone know where I can get the comics?) and so I think this would have shown that Giles reinstated himself as watcher, and shows that he wants to continue. It would have been a great cliff hanger of an ending and prolly pissed a lot of people off but I think that would have been much better than Dawn saying it.

the final part was seeing the camera zoom in on buffy so that was the final say, my opinion anyway.

If the shot had been ON DAWN when she said the line, then yes I'd be irked--but as others here have said the final "word" of the series really was the look on Buffy's face as the camera pushed in. And creatively speaking I think it was wise not to end the show on a line of dialog. Because there is no string of words that could really do it y'know? Anything Buffy could have actually said would have fallen far short of what the series had meant to us all for seven years. So best not try, and just go out on Buffy thinking about Dawn's question. Seven seasons of quips and monster-slaying ending on a thought. Personally, I dug it.

Bugged me a bit at the time - I'd rather one of the core four got the final word, but that's not rally my biggest niggling dislike in the final arc, so I'll happily let it go. At least Dawn didn't get the final shot too.

I was half-expecting the final shot to be the camera pushing in on an angry-looking Principal Wood. Like half the other closing shots in season 7.

But now that I think about it, there was no need to have one of the Core Four say the final line. The meeting they had before the final fight really showed their significance more than the last line could have.

To me, Buffy's smile was the real last line. It could have either been taken as, "We did it. HOT DAMN, WE DID IT!!!" or "You can rest now, Spike. You saved us all," or as one of my Bangel friends said once, "Now that this is all over, I'm gonna get Willow to cast a spell so I can go jump Angel's bones forever after." It could literally mean something different for whoever saw it. As it turned out, I now see it as a "You only think it's over. You ain't seen NOTHING yet." sort of smile.

I found out who would say the last word before I saw it, and even if I was surprised my thought were more like "Oh, so at least she´s not going to die. Then I saw the episode it didn´t bother me at all and as most already said, it´s Buffys smile that is the last word. If we didn´t know it before, at least "Hush" taught us you don´t need words to speak.

Darla had the first line of the series so maybe Darla should have popped up lol I feel the same way as a few others, I was just happy to have the camera focus in on Buffy's face and smile as the last image of the series.

Bugged me at first, but I was over it pretty quickly. Besides, as many have already said, Buffy's smile spoke louder and, I think, was better than anything that anyone could've said.

I didn't mind at all, although I think it would have been cool if they had moved the core four's convo to the end and had Giles say "The Earth is doomed". I do love paternal Giles... Although I think a lot of people would have hated that. I liked the smile though, and I never disliked Dawn, plus at that point I'm still all emotional about Anya so I probably would have accepted Drusilla dancing with an umbrella shouting "Lasagne!"

Actually, I think an absolute golden opportunity was lost in not mirroring the first line of the series spoken by a cast member.

First line (Darla): "Are you sure this is a good idea"
Suggested last line: "Are you sure this was a good idea?"
And then... have Buffy's smile.
Don't really care who would have spoken it. Dawn works as well as anyone.

The whole "The earth is definitely doomed" line comes close but is too early.

The subtext in that line has multiple meanings.
Including... was ending the tv series a good idea?
Just my take on things.

Personally i do not find anything wierd in Dawn saying final word. I do not see why it is important who does say it. For all i care it could be the first 🙂

I think that Buffy probably had the last line, and Willow was the only person to hear it.

I do like that it was Dawn, Buffy couldn't have said something good enough to end the show.
Dawn was perfect.

Honestly... I never thought about it til now.

But as others as lamented, it was Buffy's *expression* that was the most important thing. That was the last *line* in my book.

Had Buffy been slated with the last line, it puts tremendous pressure on her to deliver it correctly. Not even that, but the line would have to be exactly right or spurn a conversation like this! I'm fine with Dawn having the last line because think about it...if Willow or Xander had said it, it would have made their characters kind of unfulfilled...I don't know how else to say it. Like they were looking for more or not satisfied. But they've been through everything pretty much with Buffy. With Dawn delivering the line, it was ok because she hadn't "seen" what the others have so naturally she would wonder what they were going to do now.

Buffy's expression at the end was really the "last line" for me and SMG did it perfectly.
