Dawn jealous of father/daughter relationship Giles and Buffy

Hey just re-watching s5. 'The real me' and was just analysing Dawn's behaviour towards Giles. You think she could be jealous of what Buffy and Giles have?
Also I was noticing some common sides to Tara and her in this episode. They both kind of feel like outsiders and the way Tara looked her up outside the magic box made me feel like she was all sistery about dawn in this episde 🙂

I felt exactly the same whilst watching this episode.
I does make sence for Dawn to be jealous. They have both pretty much lost their real father and Buffy got a replacement in Giles where as Dawn didn't.
 
Well why wouldn't she be jealous? Their real father won't spend time with them, and then Buffy gets Giles instead. Meanwhile Dawn has noone as a fatherfigure, and it causes envy. Like she probaly envy Buffy a ton of other things too.
 
well dawn came into season 5...buffy and giles had a close relationship for almost 5 years. with the fake memories everyone new that buffy had a sister but didnt meet her till season 5 (i think) l0l

i know but she's stil remember all the attention giles gave to buffy and probably not that much too her. Even in her memory. 🙂

I'm going to look at this from Giles perspective for a moment. I think he agreed with Buffy and Joyce that Dawn shouldn't be seeing the dead body inside the Magic Box. In this way, I think Giles was being playing the role of the protective father. He lets Willow and Xander and Anya help because they have already been through stuff like finding a dead body. I think he was trying to protect her, a very fatherly thing to do.

As far as Tara and Dawn, I totally agree that they both bonded over being outsiders in the group. I kinda of got a very mother daughter feel their instead of a sisterly feel. Like Tara was being the one grown up who understands how Dawn is feeling.

Also, how cute was it when Tara and Dawn thumb wrestled 😀?

I think that Dawn was definitely jealous. But then again she was jealous of everything Buffy had. But as far as Giles is concerned it wasn't long before he had to play father to both of them. 🙁 Buffy, however, was most certainly jealous of Dawn and her relationship with their mother. She wanted to be Pumpkin Belly...

Yes I would, but there is no rule saying that she can't have two fatherly figures.

🙁 🙁 I felt bad for Buffy at this point. Her never having a nickname, not being able to do the mother daughter stuff that Dawn gets to.
 
Hmm. I don't know about that. I think Giles played a fatherly role for Dawn from "Real Me" onwards. I haven't seen the episode in awhile, so this is going off memory, but here's why:

- In the very first scene, Dawn has accompanied Buffy to her training session. It's implied (by the fact that Buffy often has to babysit Dawn, and the amount of time we know Buffy spends training) that this isn't the first time this has happened. As much as Buffy was Dawn's babysitter, we can assume that Giles has shared the responsibility, too.

- When they're driving, and Dawn leans forward to fiddle with the radio, Giles snaps at her. Which is a fatherly thing to do. Someone who didn't know Dawn very well, or someone trying to get to know her better, would probably be more polite. Weird as it may sound, Giles' snappishness felt very fatherly and comfortable to me. He knew Dawn well enough to tell her what to do, just as he did Buffy.

- He didn't want Dawn to see the body in the Magic Shop. This is clearly something he was doing to protect her.

We also have to remember that he has known Dawn since she was about ten years old. He feels strongly about Buffy, and it's only natural he is going to feel strongly about her little sister that is often in their presence, who he has watched grow up, learned to protect, etc etc. Obviously he may not have been AS CLOSE to Dawn as he was to Buffy, because he probably did spend more time with Buffy than Dawn, but still.

I think Dawn's behavior stemmed more from her jealousy of her big sister in general. That too, is normal. Buffy was her gorgeous, smart, spunky and strong older sister. She had cool friends that Dawn genuinely liked (Xander, Willow, and Tara in particular), super powers, and their mother's trust that didn't quite extend to Dawn. Buffy had a lot of things that could make any younger sibling envious.
 
Speaking as someone who doesn't really know their father, I think it would be perfectly understandable that Dawn would envy Buffy for having that relationship with Giles. I also think to a certain extent there's also a little hero envy, because Buffy is this strong, powerful being that Dawn isn't and she probably feels that, that makes Buffy more 'special' than she is.

As for Tara's sisterly genre, I think Tara probably feels a little protective of Dawn because she sees how the gang treats Dawn like an outsider when she herself feels like one. PLUS it's cute!

I think there's no question Giles feels fatherly about Dawn. But I don't think she feels like he does when she's being all pubery like this.

Like you said she's seems generally jealous of her sister I agree on that too.

What makes it right is that Buffy is also jealous of the relationship Dawn and their mom have. I think it makes the story line stronger. Otherwise it would have been so well.. one sided

Yeah. I think it's a typical older/younger sister relationship. Dawn is jealous of the freedom and responsibility Buffy has; Buffy is jealous of how babied and taken care of Dawn is.
 
yeah i did notice that too but i guess i just shrugged it off since it's normal for them to feel that way. After all, they aren't originally part of the scoobies but i am happy they will be closer as the episodes go farther. i stalled on watching season 5. i just realized how ridiculously close i am to the final season and i don't want that to happen 🙂 I love the relationship Giles and Buffy have. don't u? 😀
 
I think most siblings are like that. I often get jealous of my older brother and sister; and I'm sure Dawn feels the same. I mean, it's hard being the youngest. 😉 I can definitely see there being jealousy there; Dawn didn't really have anyone other than Joyce in her life; she didn't seem to have very many friends, no father and she and Buffy didn't get on all that well in the beginning. I don't think it was just Giles she was jealous of, she seemed pretty jealous of Buffy having the Scoobies all revolving around her, and Dawn having no-one, really.
 
I definitely think Dawn was jealous of the closeness between Giles and Buffy, but Giles was fatherly toward Dawn, too. It's very evident in both seasons 5 and 6 that Giles loves both of them and I think he always kind of thought of them as his daughters, even if they weren't biological. Obviously he's going to be closer to Buffy because he's her Watcher, but especially once Giles finds out Dawn is The Key, he is very paternal toward her.
