So I'm watching Angel Season 2 right now which shows what exactly Angelus did to her before changing her into a vampire.

It really makes me stop and wonder why they never killed Drusilla off. It could have been a really tragically beautiful thing. I mean, sure she'd be dying but on the other hand, it be the epitome of mercy kill. Tortured into insanity and then imprisoned forever in the Earth as a parasitic demon...

It's almost despicable no one ever did kill her and free her from the curse.

This bugged me too. You'd think Angel in particular should be totally determined to take Drusilla out of her misery but no, he actually lets her and Darla walk away after sitting them on fire. In BtVS S2 he isn't much interested in killing off Dru, doesn't even tell Buffy about her until she presses him for info in Lie to Me.

I think she was such a great character they couldn't say goodbye to her, just as they kept bringing Darla back time and again.

Well because she's family to him. it's a sick, warped and twisted family dynamic no doubt but it is still someone he cares about in a certain way. I think it would be really hard for him to kill Dru, just like it would be for him to kill Darla or Spike. It might be wrong but they were companions for a long time.

Yeah, it's not that he's not willing to but he find it difficult to kill Dru because of the guilt and emotion he feels and personal connection he has with her.

This is what Holland meant when he said Angel would find it difficult to kill Dru and Darla. This is why he set them on fire rather than stakes them. He does it at a distance and turns so he doesn't see them die.

This is exactly why W&H used Drusilla.

Well IMO, consequently of the fact, that the character Drusilla left a lot of open questions to the fans, what happened to her after leaving Sunnydale in Buffy season 5 and so on...that's why it would have been easy, if they would have let her die and give it as an infomration to the fans during season 7 or so....

I would have been all too happy to kill off Drusilla. I hated the character... I felt like the writers used her as an excuse to write stupid, random crap for her to say as a way of being "funny" and I never found her funny. In season 2 of Buffy, I thought she was ok, but when they kept bringing her back, especially on "Angel", I got bored and annoyed with her super fast.

I would have been all too happy to kill off Drusilla. I hated the character... I felt like the writers used her as an excuse to write stupid, random crap for her to say as a way of being "funny" and I never found her funny. In season 2 of Buffy, I thought she was ok, but when they kept bringing her back, especially on "Angel", I got bored and annoyed with her super fast.

She was never one of my favorite characters either. I did think she was better in Angel than in Buffy. The scene where she walks in and sires Darla was chilling.

nightshade agrees: but he did kill Darla in season 1 of Buffy

Because he had to in order to save Buffy, he didn't kill her of his own volition before that. (also it was kind of before the writers had seen the potential in and evolved the Angelus/Darla history... ;P)

All the answers are good but I think the simplest is that Dru wanted to live. Sure she has no soul but she still has a consciousness and free will.
