Death And Immortality

What got me to thinking about this is the scenes where Anya and Eve tells Say that they are dying, but they really mean that they are, after being immortal, going to live a normal life span, and the "Shanshu" prophecy that Angel is working so hard to achieve, or like the Immortals in the "Highlander" series who are litterally fighting for the privilege of growing old and dying.

So, here's the question: If you were immortal, or at least could live virtually forever unless you encountered some sort of fatal accident or were murdered, what would make you give that up?

A child hands down . If I was to have a child I would give up an immortal life so I could grow old with my children , it just wouldn't be right x
 
If I could trade it for something better.

Kind of how Angel trades his mortality to be a Vamp again for the greater good.

Something that could benefit many people

Seriously, immortality would be the last thing I'd want. Live forever while anyone you have ever cared about withers and dies around you? Not my kinda party. Good Ol' mortality suits me fine.
 
Id never give up being Immortal. Id love to be able to live to see what the futures like
 
I would never ACCEPT being immortal. I don't like the way the world is going. I REALLY don't want to be alive to see it.
 
Like Blondie Bear and Kean have already basically said, immortality doesn't and never has held an appeal for me. I mean I wanna look like I'm immortal- you know like looking forty at the age of ninety, haha- but actual immortality? It seems kinda over-rated to me. Watching everyone you love and care about grow old and die around you....no I'd hate that. And eternal life in itself would undoubtedly get boring after a while. I mean I would think there's only so long you can ride on that thrill. So I guess my answer is that I would never want immortality in the first place.

But hypothetically if I did want immortality the thing that would make me give it up would be a family. I wouldn't want to stay young forever while my husband and children got older and older and eventually died. I'd want to grow old- and yes, die- with them.

I would want to be immortal, so it would take something earth shattering for me to give it up. I might give up my immortality to save humanity or something. Not much else, though.

I'm basically a selfish person. Also, I'm afraid of death and facing that great unknown, which I suspect is just nonexistence. Faced with the choice between existence and what I strongly think to be nonexistence, I would almost always choose the former. More than that fear, though, I think I would want the opportunity to do and see learn everything I want to do and see and learn. With the world being so vast and varied, that would take several lifetimes, at least. Watching those I loved grow old and die would be sad, but no more sad than it would be if I were growing old and dying with them. Besides, if I had the chance, I think my loved ones would want me to live rather than to die with them. With so many items in the "Pro" column, I just can't bring myself to say immortality would be a bad thing.
 
Immortality has never been something I'd go for anyway (yes, I'm one of the "there's a better world than this, and we go to it when we die" variety, aka the Vale of Woe Fraction... so sue me! 😛 ), so I'd give it up for a mushroom & salami pizza or something along that line. 😀
 
I couldn't hack immortality. As far as I know, I've still got plenty of time left in this life to screw things up royally, I don't need any more time!

I agree with Joyce though, it would be cool to stay youthful looking until old age...but only if everyone else had the same ability.

If I had it, I'd probably be like Arawen in Lord of the Rings (the more romantic, Jackson version)...I'd give it up for love or something corny like that.
 
I have to say if i had immortality there had to be really *HUGE* reason for me to give it up.
 
For me it would have to be love. Love of a family member, love of friends, love of a lover...
Can you imagine living forever and seeing everyone around you dying... and you just live on. Everyone you meet goes and you stay.

That would be enough to give up immortality for me.
 
Well, first of all let me say, I'm of course also a fan of the 'look-youthful-forever'-group. Okay, maybe not as youthful as now, but maybe give it another up to 5 years would be okay.
Then, there's some important questions, first, who else has immortality? Is it like being a vamp, that I can force it upon just anyone? That way I don't think I would give it up any time soon, as I could just turn anyone dear to me into an immortal being as well.
Second, in what form am I immortal? Can I be youthful, healthy etc. or am I stuck inside a body I do not want?
Third, let's say the world ended, what would happen to me? Would I also die with it or would I end up floating in endless empty space for eternity?
And last but not least, are there any other catches? Like being soulless, having some duties I might or might not want etc.?
Well, those are all factors that needed to be solved, but if everything was the way I wanted it when I was immortal I would keep my immortality until there was nothing new for me anymore and I got too bored. The question is if this is ever going to happen. People alwlays discover something new, new people are born every day, new fiction is produced. So maybe I would even keep it forever then.

Nothing. Absolutely nothing.
 
If I were immortal I wouldn't give it up for anything except love - but it would have to be the one for me.. not just any old love affair.

But just think what you could see if you were immortal - what kind of things mankind might achieve in the next 1000 years... colonies on the Moon and/or Mars; manned space flight to other areas of our galaxy; meeting extra-terrestrials for the first time; the medical advancements for example would be astonishing to look back at and say "I remember when..."
