And why?

I really love the fact that Joss is not afraid to take risks with his characters (i.e. killing them off); when it holds great meaning and is not just used for the shock factor.

Saying that, I found Tara's death to be somewhat.. meaningless, which for me, made it a death that should not have happened. Perhaps it's because I don't exactly like Dark Willow as a character.

In Season Six, I really began warming up to Tara as a character; she was presented as a stronger, more self-assured person, and I loved the direction they were going with her. I understand that Tara's death held great significance for Willow, but couldn't the dark arts have consumed Willow without having to exploit Tara?

I've never agreed with a sentiment as much as I do here. Tara's death was pointless and was purely done for the "shock factor". Joss even admits part of why he did it was to kill off Willow's lover and shock the audience. He even got to fulfill his wish of killing off a regular on their first appearance as a regular. TBH, it makes me a little furious to this day he killed of the sweetest character in the 'verse. I'm sure, like you said, Dark Willow could have happened another way. (Unlike you, I did like the dark saga).

Cordy! I really wish they hadn't killed off her character. I didn't feel like her character story was quite over yet.

Oh, and Jonathon. Just cause I like Jonathon!

Cordelia, Tara and Anya Should Not Have Died, (They Were My Favorite Characters.)

Cordelia - Had Been There Since The Beginning (She Should Have Finished The Season)

Tara - IMO She Shouldn't Have Died

Anya - She Shouldn't Have Died Either

Well, Emma Caulfield is the one who requested Anya to be killed...

Cordelia, imo, is the only death that was truly effed up, and I have forever lost respect for Joss for that incident.

What i will say is that some people had to die to have an effect on the audience. To have that effect on an audience, sometimes big characters who are loved by the fans are killed off.

I agree about Cordelia, obvs. I mean you do have to give credit to Joss for being bold enough to kill off beloved characters for the sake of furthering the story, but I really don't think that was the case with Cordelia. I mean, as much as I liked Tara, her death really had a purpose. Up to that point Willow was on the mend. She was getting stronger and better at controlling her magic, but Tara dying just sent her over the edge. And honestly I don't think anything less than a loved one dying would have made her go so far off the deep end. But Cordelia's death was more the result of drama behind the scenes, which really sucks. 🙁 So unnecessary. I mean, I love You're Welcome, and it truly was a beautiful goodbye, but Cordelia shouldn't have had to die. She should have been a part of season 5. She should have awakened from the coma, and gotten a chance to be there at the very end, seeing as how she'd been there since the beginning. She went through so much and grew so much as a person, and to see that all go to waste....🙁 I mean, when Faith slipped into that supposed coma of no return, she got to wake up from it. And why? Because Eliza and Joss are besties. Now, that's a bit of an exaggeration, but you catch my drift. I'm not suggesting that Faith should have died, by any means, but I just feel that what was done with the character of Cordelia was really unfair. It's one thing for a character to die for a purpose, but her death, although quite beautiful, was just completely unecessary... Well, what's done is done, I suppose, and there's no changing the outcome of the show. This particular issue just gets to me a bit...

Anya!!!! I love her, she was the comedic relief in tough and rough situations, plus she was super cute. we would be best friends. when I saw her get chopped I screamed really loud, hahahahahaha. my mom was like WTF Timmy!!! I didn't care about Jenny or Tara that much. With Tara I was more upset because Willow was evil. On Angel I knew Doyle would bite it. since Cordie Had die, her death scene should have involved everyone and been more dramatic, I mean she was there since day one and it was like "OK bye now".. I was terribly upset to see Fred die, it impressed me because even though it was the same actress with the same face, it gave u the feel that Fred was gone. Even though I love these characters I understand why they must go, in war there is always casualties.

This topic can go off in so many directions.
In my opinion, they all should have died. The ones who were killed, anyway. Fred and Tara were both only on the show for about three seasons. I love both the characters, but without their deaths, we wouldn't have seen the other characters react as they did. Character development, much? Wesley and Team Angel had to deal with their emotions rather quickly. Were it not for the way Fred died, I think they would have mourned longer. Willow went crazy, but her character grew so much in the last season. In my opinion, it was necessary.
Cordy, I'm not saying I'm glad she died, but it was better than dying in the last episode. She would of course have trouble fighting, Angel would of course help her, and probably have gotten them both killed. I'm not a fan of the way she died, but it was better in her sleep than a bloody, gory one.

Lindsey didn't have to die. It was a cheap death that proved nothing and furthered nothing, it was just an ugly end to a character who'd been there for the first episode, and an ugly end for Lorne too. Just a few episodes previously Angel is speechifying about how he'd save even Knox, and now he's having Lindsey killed - not in any 'to do good you have to do evil' way, like with Drogyn; just a dictatorial settling-of-old-disputes. Ugly ugly ugly.

Agreed! I forgot about Lindsay and Lorne's final scene. That sucked balls.

yes! I hated Lorne for killing Lindsay.

I don't think that's exactly true, Cordelia was already becoming a mean fighter, and the demon in her continued to give her more and more powers. Who's to say that she wouldn't have been just as strong and powerful as Angel by that time.

I agree Cordelia could fight but i think its suggesting too much that she could be as strong as Angel.

But the thing is that we will never know what direction Joss could have taken Cordelia in. Would you have believed in Season 1 that Willow would be more powerful then Buffy by Season 6? Perhaps if Joss liked Charisma as much as he liked Alyson Cordelia would have been as strong in Angel. I'm not saying that it's a definite, but it's definitely a possibility.

Cordy-talk about a mess. Fred's death was way overrated and it got me mad because Cordy has been around since the beginning and Fred came in season 2.

None. They all served their purpose one way or another.

I'm in the minority here, I guess, and I've already said this before, but I wouldn't give up You're Welcome for anything. Including having Cordy all through Season 5. I missed her and what happened to her sucked, but her send off was beautiful. The perfect way for her to go out. Her character came full circle, too. She evolved from the 'typical bitca' we see in the first episode of BtVS to dying for the mission in her last episode.

The "pointless" deaths I love too, just because, IMO it gives off the message of what death truly is: pointless and unfair. But it happens. That's why in the end, I don't have a problem with Tara's death or Fred's or Anya's. Because the end result was, for me at least, an awesome storyline. I love Dark Willow, I love Illyria, & Anya dying in battle showed how much she evolved as well through out the show.

I agree with all of you about Tara's death a lot. Tara's death reduced Tara's character to "Willow's girlfriend". It really annoyed me because I think Tara was growing and coming into her own, a very strong character even independent from Willow. Her death put her back into that generic role. Her character was more than that and I wish more people (like Dawn) actually missed Tara for who she was as opposed to feeling sorry for Willow.

And Cordelia...*sigh* I feel like Cordelia is the only reason I am still mad at Joss. It was completely dumb and irresponsible as a creator, putting Cordelia into a coma and keeping her there for S4 and S5 was the worst decision ever made in all of Buffyverse, IMHO. She makes a world of difference and she really is the heart of Angel. It would've been like killing Xander in S6 of Buffy. Not to mention that her death was useless. She could've relayed the same message to Angel without dying. She could've been the heart and soul that made Angel move further away from Wolfram & Hart. I just don't see why she had to die. Plus no one even bothered to remember her death and it was completely forgotten two episodes after it happened....

And this is an unpopular opinion but I don't like Fred's death. I did not like "A Hole in the World" actually and I felt like Fred die because Joss was bored and wanted to see Amy Acker played Illyria. I love Fred WAY more than Illyria and seeing Illyria in the series finale as opposed to Fred always breaks my heart. She should've been there. Both main female characters were killed in S5 of Angel and I think it's too excessive and without meaning.

Totally agree, I mean I love Joss but the way he handled Cordelia is one thing I'm sting angry about. And yes, it drives me crazy that after her death everything was just business as usual. I chalk that up to poor planning on the writers part...

I agree, and I agree that Willow could have gone off the deep end without necessarily killing Tara. Her magic addiction began without Tara.

Aside from Willow's guilt, we hear very little from the other characters concerning Tara's death. There was more sorrow after Joyce's death, and many of the characters had spent little time with her.

I can understand that Joss feels he should kill off beloved characters for the sake of character/story development, I just don't feel like Tara's death was handled well. After all she'd been through, a bullet just seemed pitiful.

I didn't like how they killed of Lindsey in the end. I was never a fan of his, but I mean, come on! It seemed like it was purely for shock value that Lorne would kill somebody. Sheesh!
