Ok. So I just finished watching the first season of Dexter last night and since I didn't see any thread that goes into detail about this show I thought I'd start one. I put it here because Julie Benz stars as Dexter's girlfriend so that would be the connection.

EEEUUUWWWWW. This show is extremely DISTURBING. Not recommended for the weak-minded, weak-hearted, and especially for those with a weak-stomache.

Now I consider myself to be totally jaded as far as horror films and shows. I tend to avoid the "Slasher" genre mostly because it bores me and never has any plot or reason except to see a bunch of horny teenagers get butchered which doesn't really interest me much. Saw 1 to 5, Hostel, Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre etc. aren't my style at all.

Dexter is like a combination of CSI, Silence of the Lambs and Texas Chainsaw Massacre combined into one and is told from the point of view of a Serial Killer who was adopted by a Policeman at the age of three and raised to hunt and kill those criminals and murderers who slip through the cracks of the Justice System.

Although he is an unrepentant killer (for the most part) he has an extreme aversion to blood in his killing - however he works by day as a Blood splatter specialist for the Miami Forensic department of the Miami Police. He uses his skills to hunt other killers and hide his own crimes which are exclusively carried out against other killers.

Bottom line - I haven't watched a movie or television program nor have I read a book that grossed me out and gave me nightmares since the first HELLRAISER movie. I was generally FREAKED during the majority of the 12 episodes that make up the first season. I haven't slept more than 3 hours a night for the last 4 days. I had to pause the show at least twice during each episode to give myself a break - graphically it is INTENSE - I mean literally gallon after gallon of BLOOD. NASTY, NASTY, NASTY. And it's made for TV - albeit a Cable network but still. UNBELIEVABLE.

I find it interesting that after characters like Angel and Spike and almost everyone on the Sopranoes etc. etc. we are now accustomed to ROOT for and be on the side of an Anti-heroe like Dexter. I was just anxious for him to butcher the next BAD-GUY (meaning someone even badder than him)

I now have two choice.
a) Seek long term Psycological counselling.
b) Start watching season 2.

Any other fans here? Opinions about the show? For / against?

I love Dexter! A lot of people on the forums do. It's definitely one of the bests shows on TV right now.

It wasn't that bad! Season 2 is great too, I can't quite decide if it's better than 1 though.

Uncle Rory agrees: Not that BAD? Remember Buffy Season 1? They didn't even SHOW blood when the Vamps Bit someone. One Ep of Dexter has more blood than 7 seasons of Buffy even counting the stuff in Angel's fridge.

You can't compare Buffy and Dexter, really. They are VERY different shows. Dexter does have a lot of blood but I never thought it was tasteless, they didn't put it there just to shock people!

The choice is easy. Start watch season 2. No doubt about it. It´s a very good show but I´m not a total fanatic like some people on these boards. As lurker said they are quite a few here. 😀 And even if Dexter is a bad guy he isn´t that bad. After all he only kills people that commits bad crimes and get away with it. Creeps that have escaped the system. It´s likle saying that Robin Hood is a bad guy. He steals. Of course murder is worse but you see the point. Still, I do hope he get caught in the end whenever the last season gets made. And hopefully it´s his sis (or his real life wife as things are now. 😉) that does it.
 
I LOVE Dexter, as some people well know 😉 and I think the first season is great TV. I mean the story may get a bit silly, but I love every second of it. You must watch the second season. 😀

Maybe there's something wrong with me, but I didn't take any notice of the gore and blood. : erm :

But really, it wasn't sensationalist, it was just the right amount. Realism.

I'll admit it wasn't sensationalist - it was appropriate to the story which is really THE MOST HORRIFYING THING POSSIBLE! NASTY, NASTY, NASTY!!!

That's not a very good comparison to be honest. Dexter doesn't kill people because it's "justice", he kills because he has to. Robin Hood, however, doesn't steal because he's kleptomanic. 😉

Oooh I love Dexter! I watched the first season in one sitting (a very hungover day and I managed to stomach the blood fine 😛) Season 2 was good too, I only just finished it a little while ago. Cant wait to see the next season. 😀

I think S2 was better than 1.. do you concur,
yeah man... dex is my idol. but Hall was nice in 6ft Under too.. i was surprised that my aunt watched it and she about bugged out when i said i had season two.. hence, i no longer have season two.
 
I really like Dexter. I've only seen up to season 2 though.. But, so far, it's quite amazing. Michael C Hall is great. I didn't think it was that bad with the gore and all? The POV of a serial killer, that's what I like about it. It sure is creepy. I think s2 is better too..you should definitely keep watching.
 
Hehe I only just realised that it was the same guy as in Six feet Under, but I've only just brought those DVDs and didnt get to watch much of it on TV. But I squeeled when I realised it was him lol. Does he always play over-organised characters?

Sco, I duno if I like s2 better than s1, I liked him less emotional. But I have only seen it once thru and I might change my mind when I see it again. I dont want to give away spoilers so I will leave it at that 😛
 
Dexter is one of my favorite televison shows at the moment. Michael C. Hall is fantastic in the role. I only wish they hadn't gotten rid of a certain character in season 2. I was blown away by Jimmy Smits as Miguel Prado in season 3 which was better that season 2 in my opinion.
 
Dexter is one of the best shows that has hit television in the last few years! Me and my boyfriend pretty much watched the first 2 seasons back to back. It is an amazing series. I'm about halfway through Season 3 but haven't watched it for a while - trying to juggle too many TV shows at once.

Uncle Rory I like your point about being encouraged to like the 'bad guys'. I had a massive debate about this with one of my mates who had started watching Dexter and I basically told him that if he really thought Dex was a bad guy, then he should just stop watching it!
I really like it when tv shows/films do this though. My best example of this is Rob Zombie's House of a Thousand Corpses and The Devil's Rejects. You're meant to like the 'bad guys.' And I do!

I think Julie Benz is brilliant in the series as well. I love Rita!

The only bit of the series that really made my stomach turn was the scene in the hotel room when he walks in and slips in ALL the blood. Gruesome!

Dexter is awesome.
Me and my mum started watching it together and fell in love (my mums biggest celebrity crush is now Michael C. Hall)
I love how this show really does just have everything and they're not scared to show all the blood.
Also, his sister is amazing. I love to see someone on TV that swears as much as me. Just seems a lot more real, most shows something scary happens and they say "Oh, gosh" not very real.

My mum was so, so happy this mothers day when I bought her the first Book 🙂
 
I want to watch it for Julie Benz, coz I love her, but me + lots of gore and blood = throwing up, passing out, and years of therapy.
 
Yay! Dexter fans! I just started watching it like a week ago. Now I'm about to finish the second season. I am SOOO addicted!!! The show is now one of my top favorite shows ever! It just keeps you wanting more after every episode! I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't ever seen it.
