Do you think Andrew even though he finally came to terms of him killing Jonathan under The First's orders, do you still think he deserved to survive "Chosen"? Had Andrew proven himself to be a loyal member of The Scooby Gang?

I actually feel like he felt remorse for his murder when he cried over the seal but he didn't get nearly enough punishment, everyone just ignored his murder. But I don't think he deserved to die.

My answer here is the same as it was in the "Did Jenny Deserve To Die" thread In the Buffyverse, as dictated by Joss Whedon, the only ones who are assured survival are the ones whose death would either be preferred, or make no difference whatsoever. Andrew is the Jar Jar Binks of the Buffyverse, only with even less comedic value. His death would add nothing to the dramatic nature of any story line, therefore, he is guaranteed survival in all cases.

Actually his death (if it was in saving someone else) would have been really significant as it would have completed his little arc. Going from a wannabe to villain to emasculated host to actual hero. It would have been a nice little arc for Andrew to die whilst fighting bravely. To show that finally he was in control of his life rather than being influenced and directed by others.

Good point, but that would just be a tidy plot thing. I guess because I'm not invested in Andrew then I don't think he should have still been around by this point, and he isn't worthy of being a part of the final battle in the final episode ever. So what you are suggesting might make for a clear end to his narrative, but it would also lack drama, it would just be a wimpy nerdy support character in his one moment of bravery getting killed.

That's the thing. At least it would have made the character serve a purpose.. if he saved a core character. Otherwise he was and is nothing but a purposeless, throwaway, cookie-cutter character.

If Andrew had died, he would sort have died a hero. Andrew didn't deserve an honorable death. So, his surviving isn't a reward, he's actually been denied a way to heroically atone for what he's done.

Even Andrew thought he deserved to die in 'Chosen'.
Therefore his survival was assured by the writing gods.

But it seems to be the case that the writers are content to have him do many more unforgivable things (3+ and counting), then be forgiven for those things through very little effort on his own part, and then be accepted as a Scoobie because...?
I got nothing.

Er... He kind of saved Dawn's life and maybe some slayers in Wolves at the Gate.

Yes, because everyone dies eventually, meaning that him surviving doesn't mean he will be around forever.

If Andrew was immortal, my opinion might have been different (even thought he brings some needed comic relief to season 7).

Andrew is the Jar Jar Binks of the Buffyverse

As insults go, that's probably the greatest. I salute you @white avenger

I always felt Andrew was the weird shaped spanner in the toolbox. Completely pointless, doesn't do anything useful but you might need it one day so you keep it around. He didn't deserve to die, but he didn't necessarily deserve to live either, not at the expense of Anya IMO. (Who had worn out her welcome by that point too, but at least she did something over her time on the show)

Well deserve might be the wrong term to use, but yeah, I think he should've wrapped up there. It would've completed his arc and saved comic-verse Buffy from the character.

Because the Trio were essentially the nerdy writers on screen. He has immunity granted by those writing gods because he is them. 😉

I think you were close. I think they were a representation of what (some) of the writers were before fame swallowed them. They were known as, and for, being the nerds but in truth they had stopped being them for years. That is why the nerds were lovable (as it was an aspect of their past) but also the villains as it was something that will forever haunt them- they will forever be called the nerdy writers, just as you did. They both hated and loved their former nerdentity.
