Did Angel become massively dull after falling for Buffy?

I think they humanized him too much. In the first few seasons he was still the fish out of water, and it worked. That is what, to me, made the character unique and interesting. I think the whole series could have been him being the outsider and never really fitting in.

I suppose that's the difference between us because I don't mind tones and themes shifting. I like the concept of Angel being an outsider but then having a family of sorts. The twist is the more they humanized him, the more we see he actually at odds with human inside not just the demon, which is theme visited in 'Amends'.

Which would have really been highlighted as Wes was an 'insider' who decided to be an 'outsider' and then further with the introduction of Spike, he should have been the fish out of water but he adapted and was accepted into 'society' while Angel still was on the outside looking in. That could have added more drama between them than just the Cup of Mt Dew thing.

I agree that the Spike issue could have been handled better but I still enjoyed Angel's journey. I liked how in Season 5, even with Spike, he was still alone and with hard decisions he had to make alone, he understood Wes better.

For me, when Angel assimilated he lost what made him unique. It would have been a really interesting way to look at the character, that with a soul he never really fit in and the only time he felt like he was part of a group was when he was a soulless vampire.

That's just it, I think there is more to Angel than that. I've always seen Angel as the guy who is alone in the crowd, even when people around him love him. It's his lack of self acceptence that doesn't only allow him to be estranged from the people he cares about but also leads him to make the decisions he did. I liked it at the end Season 4 when he was fighting for a world which "didn't care for him" even when he believed his friends might already be dead.

To me that would have been a more interesting character. That would have been one hell of a curse. The only time you feel like you belong is when you are a soulless monster. That would have really given him something to brood over.

Trust me, Angel can brood over anything! 😉

I agree. But it sure didn't feel like that after season 2. Or at least to me. He just seemed to really fit into the world in season 3 and no longer felt "alone in the crowd"

its shown that he fell for Buffy from the start so i cant know how he was prebuffy. But yes, i do find him a bit dull

David did his best acting as Angelus and it was a great story, but he was still really cool as Angel. He never got dull for me anyway.

I was watching Eternity earlier and thinking how much I enjoyed Angelus scenes but season 2 Buffy was the height of Angelus - later on in Angel I never felt that was quite recaptured - he just seemed different.

Once Angel was in LA, he became A LOT more interesting. I've had so many laugh out loud moments! Smile Time, Spin the Bottle and the Pylea arc always, always gives me the giggles.

Angelus as seen in S2 Buffy was meant to be the last you saw of the character, so they let him be a bad guy. Angelus as shown on Angel was not really that bad at all as I think they were afraid to really let the character shine.

Which is a huge shame but I completely understand them wanting to not let their hero go too far. I enjoyed his brief release in season 4 but there were times where he came off as a bit silly if anything. Seeming to be talking to himself when ranting to the Beast's master etc - his running away while they still thought he was Angel was quite comedic. You didn't really laugh AT season 2 Angelus very often.

Feeling nostalgic 🙄
