I think they humanized him too much. In the first few seasons he was still the fish out of water, and it worked. That is what, to me, made the character unique and interesting. I think the whole series could have been him being the outsider and never really fitting in.
I suppose that's the difference between us because I don't mind tones and themes shifting. I like the concept of Angel being an outsider but then having a family of sorts. The twist is the more they humanized him, the more we see he actually at odds with human inside not just the demon, which is theme visited in 'Amends'.
Which would have really been highlighted as Wes was an 'insider' who decided to be an 'outsider' and then further with the introduction of Spike, he should have been the fish out of water but he adapted and was accepted into 'society' while Angel still was on the outside looking in. That could have added more drama between them than just the Cup of Mt Dew thing.
I agree that the Spike issue could have been handled better but I still enjoyed Angel's journey. I liked how in Season 5, even with Spike, he was still alone and with hard decisions he had to make alone, he understood Wes better.
For me, when Angel assimilated he lost what made him unique. It would have been a really interesting way to look at the character, that with a soul he never really fit in and the only time he felt like he was part of a group was when he was a soulless vampire.
That's just it, I think there is more to Angel than that. I've always seen Angel as the guy who is alone in the crowd, even when people around him love him. It's his lack of self acceptence that doesn't only allow him to be estranged from the people he cares about but also leads him to make the decisions he did. I liked it at the end Season 4 when he was fighting for a world which "didn't care for him" even when he believed his friends might already be dead.
To me that would have been a more interesting character. That would have been one hell of a curse. The only time you feel like you belong is when you are a soulless monster. That would have really given him something to brood over.
Trust me, Angel can brood over anything! 😉
