Did Angel get stronger on his move to L.A.?

The way he beat down everyone in Angel, from day one, compared to in Buffy where he was just slightly stronger than all of the humans, and inferior to Buffy herself, surprised me upon first viewing.

I don't think he was actually stronger, he just held back in BtVS and let Buffy do most of the fighting, since she could handle herself.

I think Angel was just a lot more focused on his own life once he was in LA. In Sunnydale he was there to firstly protect and guide Buffy and later as her lover, but his mission in life was always Buffy first, himself second.

Once he was on his own he just let go a lot more than we saw in Sunnydale. Although, having said that, there were many times even in season three of Buffy where we saw Angel starting to be more of his own man. I don't think it was as sudden a change as you might think.

when he was in BTVS, the focus was, of course, on Buffy. Angel was a background character.
but when he got his own show, Angel was forced into the spotlight, and we got to focus on him as a lead character, rather than a character created to compliment the lead, and we noticed things we'd never seen before.

Yeah, I don't necessarily think he was stronger in his show than in Buffy's, but his strength just showed more because he was, perhaps, the most powerful one around and didn't have a lot of competition. And he probably did not want to over shadow Buffy, since she was the main one there and it was her job to get the baddies. He was mainly their to help her. But in his own show, it was different because he wasn't competing for top strength, so to speak, with Buffy no longer in the picture. And it's not that he held back with Buffy around, I think it's just that when she was around he would help but would not get in the way of her duty.

Plus, you know, it is his show so you gotta expect him to knock down those fiends easily. 😀 😉

He didnt get stronger. In Sunnydale he was a sidekick he didnt need to use much power because of Buffy being a slayer. Now hes on his own, if he does not use his power to the full he will die.

I think that ATS exaggerates power. I mean.. they made Gunn, a human, seem just as powerful as vampires on Buffy at times. He would throw characters several feet in the air and slam them against a wall, it just didn't seem right. Then, they made Illyria, a demon, appear more powerful than Glory, a god. Which can't be true considering Glory had as much power in her as was tolerated in our dimension.

Illyria wasn't a demon. She was a god. She ruled the whole world at one time. The only thing is that she was trapped inside the body of a human which is why her power almost blew up the whole city. Because Fred's body couldn't contain the power of such a being, Wesley was forced to drain all that power and make her considerably weaker. And I don't think that AtS exagerrates power. Gunn was a strong guy and we never know where he learned how to fight or how he got so strong. Now if Lorne started throwing people left and right, I would then think that AtS exagerrates power.

No, Illyria was a demon. She was god-like, but she wasn't a god. Just an old demon. Fred's body was overloaded with Illyria's power, true, but ALL of Illyria's power was inside Fred at that time. Glory, on the other hand, had to leave most of her power behind because she couldn't fit it all into this dimension.

And Gunn may be strong, but still a human. No human his size would be able to throw someone his weight and larger several feet into the air like he did so many times. Lorne however, was a demon. I would completely understand him being able to "throw people left and right".

Illyria referred to himself as a GOD king alot of times. I doubt he did that just because he bought into his own hype. The AI team also called him a god. And if Glory left some power in her dimension, then it's still possible that Illyria could have been stronger than Glory because Glory wasnt at what you could call "full power." I also don't remember Gunn throwing somebody in such a way that I can say it was exaggerated. Maybe he threw people but i doubt that it was "several" feet into the air.

Yes but if you remember Illyria also bragged on and on about how powerfull she was. She was in actuality, just a demon of old. If you can find me a quote that states that Illyria was an actual God, than I'll change my mind. Just make sure that it's not Illyria saying it, because Illyria did exaggerate. Now Glory wasn't at her full power on Buffy, but she was at the maximum amount of power that she could be in this dimension. So if anything, Illyria was just as strong as Glory, but no way could she be stronger. In Angel, it's shown that Illyria is much more powerfull than anyone we have ever witnessed, thus proving that Angel must exaggerare power. I remember seeing Gunn throw a couple of vamps high into the air a couple times, about 2 or 3 feet off the ground and smacked them into a wall.

And Glory never exagerrated? She went on and on about how she could kill Buffy where she stands and yet all she ever did was kick her around a bit. Then Buffy kicked her lopsided ass. Illyria on the other hand, killed the whole AI team: Lorne, Wesley, Spike, and even Angel. Not to mention Fred. And how can you be sure that Illyria was exagerating? Illiria was the GOD king way back in his time. Maybe you see his rants as an exaggeration beacuse nobody took him seriously. Of course no one would. It's like having your mom and dad tell you they were the most popular kids in their school but you wouldn't care because it was such a long time ago. But that didn't necessarily mean it wasn't true. And if Illyria was just a demon, how come she had a whole army at her side while Glory just had a bunch of hobbits with leprosy? There's a possibilty that Illyria was more powerful than Glory. That doesn't mean that AtS "exagerrated power".

And as for your God reference, Drogyn referred to illyria as an Old One which means the first beings to walk on the planet. The Strongest purest form of the line, almost invincible.....maybe actually invincible

First off, Glory always played around with Buffy, she never thought of her as a threat, she wasn't exaggerating she was a god. Glory was JUST a demon. An old, powerful, demon. It was NEVER stated that Illyria was a god. Wolfram and hart had files on her, remember? She was not a god.

Illyria had an army because they were in her dimension. Glory came from another demension entirely, she had servants, not warriors. She had no need for an army because she herself was an army.

Illyria was not more powerfull than Glory. It was noted several times on the show that Glory had to leave a majority of her power in her dimension. A hell dimension at that. So if Glory harbored the most power possible in this demension, pray tell how Illyria could be stronger? It's shown that Illyria had strength that outshined even Glory's in Angel, which is not possible.

So.. her ass is lopsided? I don't think so. But if you've been studying her ass for lopsidedness then good for you. Honestly, I'm obviously a huge Glory fan so why would you say something that would obviously offend me. I thought we were having a conversation here, and then boom with the insults. I was hoping we could be more mature than that...

Yes but did he say she was almost invincible? I don't belive he did. And I asked for a quote that said something about her being a god, that doesn't quite cut it. So you've yet to convince me that she was a god.

and as for Buffy's victory in "The Gift":
1. Buffy had that hammer, it was the hammer of a god no less.
2. Willow brain drained her, leaving her at a near insane state. so instead of being at 100% she was prolly at like... 60%, maybe even less.
3. The orb of whatever, it probably did something to mess her up.
4. she had a small window of opportunite to get back to her dimension, so she was rushed and probably panicking.

Ok sweetie, there's a difference. When people talk about Dawn they are saying she was whiny, which that much is true, but that's not something like saying.. Dawn's ugly. I understand that not everyone likes Glory, but when you start bringing things like that out of context, knowing someone would take offense to that, you've crossed a fine line.
