Did Angel make the right choice?

what an interesting debate to which i've nothing to contribute. i just love buffy and angel as a couple that i can't actually see beyond it.

Angel's vision agrees: Good view piont, but he never dreamt of her in that way, he dreampt of her and Spike in his bed and that's the only "app" of Buffy ex the flash back before Spike appears
Joan the Vampire Slayer agrees: Great point.

Angel also had illusions of Buffy sounding like her adolescent self.

I think that he had that flashback of her voice as a symbol of regret almost. He left her in the Prom episode because he wanted her to have a normal life with a normal boyfriend who could give her children when she wanted them. Something he couldnt give her. Now Angel knows about Buffy's dysfunctional relationship with Spike, another vampire, now also re-ensouled right? He feels bad because she hasn't found that real right relationship that he thought she deserved to have! "I killed my goldfish" she says in his dream. This in responce to Angel suggesting she will soon want children. So he's jealous of Spike and feels hes taken Buff away from him. Imvaded his territrory, hense the dream with Buffy and Spike in Angel's bed. Really Buffy is back to where she started only WITHOUT Angel, her true love. This regret then leads on to the competion between him and Spike in The Girl In Question. Of course neither of them get her, or could even reach her at that point. She is still with an unnornal guy-the Immortal and Angel thinks once again that she might as well be with him (Angel, that is) if shes still choosing men somewhat questionably.

I think Angel make right decision. I'm big Bangel fan, but I understand what he did and why he did that.
Of course I would be very happy if they were together, but Angel wanted a normal life for Buffy. He wanted for her to have children (ever), boyfriend ... That was like any teenager. He did not want to take her life.
Anyway if he will be hapy he could be Angelus again and he will be dangerous. So he did not want to risk. His decision to leave was very painful to Buffy, bo she understood it.

The one thing that always rubbed me the wrong way about him leaving was the way he did it. He made Buffy out to be some silly little school girl that couldn’t be trusted to make any tough decisions. He proved that he did not trust her at all. Oh, she was good enough to make the tough choices when it came to saving the bloody world but not about what went on in her personal life. That always got to me. He was proving to be just as hypocritical as the Scoobies. If he was going to have adult relations with her, than he needed to prepared to treat her like an adult. But that is a whole other thread.

But in this instance she couldn't be trusted to make the tough decisions? If she was prepared to make them, she would have. Angel had to because Buffy didn't want to entertain the thought. That's clear in "˜Choices' when she tries to convince both of them they'll be ok but as the camera stays on her face you see that she doesn't even really believe that.

As she shooting script says, "She snuggles deeper into his arms, facing away from him. Worry on her face, that matches his own."

If we did a role reversal and it was Buffy who decided to end it I'm not convinced people would be accusing her of treating Angel like a child. Buffy often made decisions and told Angel how it was going to be without giving him an option and no one faults her for it.
