Did Anya Have a Soul?

I thought all demons are soulless? I would think Anyanka did not have a soul.

But then I had forgotten about D'Hoffryn saying that they did. Oh well... So I guess that answers it. Anyanka had a soul, just a very evil one.

What makes you think it is evil?

Anyanka did some terrible things, granted, BUT they were born from her being badly used by Olaf.

In turn she sought vengeance to help other women.

Halfrek sought vengeance for kids with bad parental figures.

I don't call them evil just extreme.

I think the first time she did not but the second time I am not so sure. She sure acted like she had a soul of some kind.

She thought she was avenging scorned women.

Not hard to believe that she started with good intentions then the more she did, the more detached she became.
That doesn't mean she was evil - just that she got in over her head.

This is backed up by the fact that when she is restored to being a Human she is reconnected with her humanity and then as a vengeance demon she couldn't do it anymore at the level she was used to, which is the level D'Hoffryn put her at, because she understands how bad it is.

I can see your side of it, but I still think her actions when she first appeared on the show were evil. Look how much joy she got out of Cordelia's wish, and the chaos that Sunnydale was in.
After Xander left her and she returned to Vengeance, I think she was less evil and just moreso trying to avenge herself by helping other women in the same boat.

I was actually thinking about this today after watching Selfless.

I believe that she did have a soul, but it wasn't a very good one in the first place. Then, after all of her killing, vengeance gigs, etc., it probably became so tainted that it was almost like she didn't have one at all, and it only began to resurface when she became human again.

I know I'm late to this, but just wanted to give my 2c.

Being a vengeance demon is not like being a vampire. It's a JOB, it's something they CHOSE, it's not a curse. I think vengeance demons DO have souls...but they also have so much vengeance coursing through their bodies, the "soul" isn't as active as a person's is. We saw what people were capable of through vengeance...Willow killed Warren, even though she had a soul.

So yeah. Yes, she had a soul. But she was also chock-full of vengeance.

She has a soul:

1. Getting a soul is shown to be painful, traumatic, etc. When Anya becomes a human she doesn't even notice
2. Dyhoffran says that to bring back those frat boys requires 'the soul of a vengeance demon'
3. The way she acted between being a demon and human doesn't suggest she looses her soul and gets it back.

i think anya had a soul. When she was Aud and just turned in Anyanka she started doing evil things because she was terribly angry, and then she started doing just more and more evil stuff and all the killing and carnage just became normal to her. Then, when she began human again she started to understand what's wrong and to feel human feelings again...so when she went back to the vengeance fold because she was depressed she couldn't just kill off people without thinking of them.

Having a soul is NOT synonymous with being a force of good. And in SOME cases, vice versa.
But anyways, Anya never lost her soul... well at least until she passed away in Chosen.

She certainly seemed to have a soul the second time she became a vengeance demon...so why not the first time? In my opinion, any kind of conscience indicates the presence of a soul...and even Anyanka seemed capable of remorse.
