that being paticually noticable in the earlier series, that all the live music bands featured at the bronz all sounded like pearl jam or placebo! what was the obsession with alternative rock bands in the show. Most of the bands all looked terribly 90's and so glad that we dont live in the 90's anymore! tell me your thoughts

Weren't a lot of the featured bands local California groups? Thought one of the Buffy DVD's delves into that - wanting to give actual working bands some exposure, make the Bronze feel more authentic as a real teen hangout.

Definitely leaned towards the grungy, post grunge, 90s college radio material, which is fine with me.

I think I preferred the lesser groups as far as the show went. When Cibo Matto or Aimee Mann or someone was there, it was almost like an infomercial/music video for the group - in terms of all the screen time they got. Seemed more like product placement.

Well, the earlier episodes were from the 90's hun. And that was the era of those bands, so it would make sense that they were on the show!

I always labeled the bands of Buffy in my mind as what I think of as College Rock, meaning the bands and balladeers who might appeal to the average college student.

And it's on the commentary for like the first ep that Joss rattles - I mean, talks - about how most of the groups weren't "famous."

I think the music reflects the times basically....plus I really can't see Buffy and the gang being into pop stuff. For me, it would be totally out of place to see Buffy dancing along to the likes of Aqua or something (sorry Aqua fans, I heard Barbie Girl on the radio this morning).

For me, Buffy is a show that's a little dark and dirty and obscure and I think the bands that they used in the early years reflect that.

So many late 90s singers were trying so hard to sound like Eddie Vedder or Kurt Cobain...it was just silly.
