Did Buffy love Spike?

You are absolutely entitled to your opinion! We're not trying to gang up on you - we're merely trying to understand your argument.

You're hardly the only one whom doesn't think she was in love with Spike. I too believe she did not love Spike. Really! And I'm a hardcore Spuffy shipper.

What, I think, people are confused about is the grey area you seem to be ammune to recognizing. So, Buff didn't love Spike. Ok.

Whatever.

She still could not have cried at his death anyway? She said to Angel, "He's in my heart". It's obvious she cared for Spike very much. Her actions speak that. Even if you are not "in love with someone" you will still mourn their death.

And no offense, but that "stabbing" excuse just sucks 🙂

There are many kinds of "love". You should watch the Chosen commentary. Might give you some interesting insights into this topic. 🙂
 
So, I've been thinking about this idea of if Buffy was crying at the end of Chosen and I have come to some conclusions.

I could play Devil's Advocate and say the reason she's crying is because, well, her hands on fire. That's got to hurt like hell. I guess if you want to convince yourself so strongly she didn't have feelings for him you can come up with any arguement...

But you know what? I like to believe she's crying because she is sad Spike is dying. The beauty of such a layered text like BtVS is that one can interpret it as one chooses. This is how I choose to interpret it. If we all agreed, that would be mighty boring, eh? Her actions spoke louder than her words ever did. She trusted him with the ones she loved best; her mother and sister. She had his chip removed without consulting with Giles or the rest of the Scooby Gang. She let him know the true side of her. They could relate and understood her like no one else.

I know it's easy to hate Spuffy. But try to back up your arguments with plasuible ones that can actually be intelligently argued 🙂

And even if you don't believe she loved him, you have to admit she cared for him and trusted him very much. By the end of the series, they'd created a loving and trusting friendship.

I agree that in his final act of sacrifice, he does redeem himself in her eyes. She is very proud of him. You can see it on her face. She knows him very well, and knew he'd have wanted to go down fighting. That's why she gave him the amulet. So he could save the world, not her.

And...Why doesn't she rebuke him when he says "No you don't but thanks for saying it?" Simple. Because she didn't have too. She doesn't have too defend anything she says. Maybe she just said it because he was dying and she felt she had too? Maybe. But maybe she said it from the heart. Who knows. Maybe she wanted to make him happy. Was she lying? Who knows. Who cares.
 
I think she loved him, even a bit "like that", but his saying "no you don't" was his acknowledgement that she didn't love him the way he loved her. He wasn't her "one", and he knew that, but even Spike knew, by then, that Buffy loved, and trusted and cared for him on many levels.

She was his "uberlove" and he knew he was not hers. He was a trusted friend, her go to man, but not the one she dreamed of growing old with.

I think her tears were for him, her, their relationship, the mission, the whole crazy mess that made a "normal" relationship impossible, and the fact that just as she was getting clarity on herself (half baked cookie) and him, and her mix of feelings for him, he wouldn't be there to see the end of it. The mission came first, he knew that. He also knew that ultimately he wouldn't have Buffy, but he could have her love and respect and die a hero, he could do some good to make up for the bad he'd done.

I think Buffy knows too, that he's not "the one", but in that moment feels all her real affection for him, and it's alot, and she knows his affection for her, and how much they've grown, and that there are regrets on both sides that they will never have the chance to make up for, and all that is sad.

Seems that everyone has analysed all the minutia of this theme without hitting on this one possibly crucial detail.

Did Buffy really love Spike may not be the most important question. Maybe the more important debate should be -

Who loved Buffy more - Angel or Spike?

I'd have to vote for Spike in this case. I really enjoyed the romanitic elements of the Angel / Buffy relationship, and keeping all things in perspective, Angel didn't leave Sunnydale because Joyce asked him to - (Real world, he left because they were spinning him off into his own show)

But I think Spike (not being cursed like Angel) was able to love Buffy more, let himself love her more, wouldn't have gone away even if she asked him to and I think she recognized that, needed that, and taking that into consideration, plus all the great points everyone else has mentioned, really did love Spike.

Honestly, as Xander says, "we don't see what's right in front of us, we want the dream" Maybe Buffy knew all along that Spike loved her, didn't feel very worthy of anyone's love (especially in S6) and only came to realize how valuable Spike's love was at the very end.

Well, who loved Buffy more doesn't dictate who SHE loved more, which is the point of the discussion...in fact, we saw in the show that she often chose to punish men for loving her...
