In "The Replacement," Riley claims that Buffy does not love him. Do you believe this to be true, or do you think he was out of bounds? There is no doubt that she cared for him, but did she really love him? It seemed like she treated him more as a convenience and a way to get over Angel. What do you think?

I am a Riley lover. I have posted to this before. I don't think Buffy loved him in a way that was all-consuming or life-long. I think she cared for him and liked having him in her life, but she wasn't in a place to give her whole self to him. He was kind of "rebound guy", and I think she needed someone to love her at that time.

After Xander gave her that reality check, she realized that maybe Riley was someone to fight for. I don't think she knew how much she was shutting him out of her life and after he left, she realized what she had lost and that maybe she could have loved him. (I still don't think they were meant to be, however.)

I think she really did love him, but I don't think she was ever IN love with him. There's such a big difference there... I think he fell completely head over heels in love with her, but she didn't feel the same about him.

Even if I am a Riley hater I think she really loved him, but she knew deep inside of her that this love isn't the love for her. I think that the doubts of both of them, destroyed the relationship!

Riley to me was a rebound boyfriend and no, I don't think Buffy loved him. To me it was obvious that she didn't.

And yes, i am a Riley hater.

I think for Buffy, without her even properly realising it, Riley was convenient for her. He adored her, and he made her feel normal, he was human and proved to her that perhaps she could have a normal relationship with someone.

I don't believe she allowed herself to be vulnerable after what happened with Angel. I think she meant to push Riley away but it happened. I'm one of the rare people who think she and Riley had as much chance as her anyone else. I mean, when you think about it, for all your Spuffies and Bangel shippers, you have to admit that that she still has a 100% failure record when it comes to relationships. Is she with Angel? No! Is she with Riley? No! Is she with Spike? No! In fact Spike is actually the best suitor at the moment and still neither of them have bothered making it official, so I'm assuming that Buffy is still cookie dough or Spike isn't bothered anymore. Either way, I'm not holding my breath.

I agree with everyone who says Buffy loved him but wasn't in love with him... She cared deeply for Riley; that much was obvious, but I don't think she ever felt nearly as deeply for him as he did for her.

I think that it was more of a case of Buffy WANTING to be in love with him than actually being in love. Riley was the perfect boyfriend, handsome, attentive, eager to please, accepted by her friends, and, most importantly, HUMAN. She was probably told time and again what a great guy he was, and how perfectly they matched, what a fantastic couple they made (no, we didn't see so much of that onscreen, but the attitude was there, nonetheless. Riley even gave up his military career (supposedly) to be with her.

But, in the end, Riley wasn't despite Xander's endorsement, the "long haul guy." That's not saying that he didn't really want to be, because he certainly did. The problem, I think, was that he wanted to be a partner, not a sidekick, and he just wasn't good enough. It's highly doubtful that ANY human, no matter how well trained and dedicated, could ever be good enough. (That's why he and Sam hit it off so quickly. They COULD be partners, just about as closely matched as two people could be. And I said partners, not husband and wife. But that's a topic that doesn't apply here.)

Bottom line is, Buffy wanted a normal relationship, with a normal boyfriend. Riley was the closest thing that she could get in that category, and she tried really hard to convince her friends and herself that she was, in fact, in love with him. In the end, though, as someone else said, there just wasn't enough monster in him to make it work.

Couldn't rep you again WA....I'm so rep happy!.... But I totally agree with what you just said!

I don't think so she cared for him that's for sure, but she never let him in. She said that's the package, but if you compare this with Angel or even Spike that just can't be the package. I think if she really was in love with him she would have needed much more time to get over him.

And yeah I hate Riley.

I think she did love him but Riley had an impossible standard of what love is that she couldn't live up to it. He wanted her to try to make him a partner but she was more interested in protecting him and his ego couldn't let it go or see it as sweet.

I never saw anything that indicated Buffy didn't love Riley completely. Sorry, but I don't need to cry all over my boyfriend every time something goes wrong and tell him about it. Sometimes it's okay to just take care of a problem yourself. She DID depend on Riley a great deal but he got all flustered when Dawn said Buffy didn't cry over him like she did Angel...and? So because he's not making her cry all the time she doesn't love him?

It's crap.

She loved him. She loves him. But they just never had that long haul, for better or worse love. He didn't give her what she needed and she didn't give him what he needed. They both hold each other in the highest esteem, they just weren't compatible as a couple.

I think she did in her own way, but was too hurt after losing Angel, so she kind of treated him like rebound guy, to quote Xander. He treated her like she deserved to be treated, but the ghost of Angel sadly was still there for her, so she didn't fully commit to Riley out of an unconscious desire not to be hurt in the same way again. I hope that makes sense.

I'm not a fan of Riley but he treat her really good and really bad, like others said I think Buffy loved Riley as a really close person to her but wasn't in love with like she was with Angel, Buffy nearly died saving Angel in season 3 both of them risked their lives for each other and both of them always come back running to each other but with Riley Buffy didn't, I think Buffy had it hard she was in a new college, she finds out she has a sister, there's the initiative, she broke up with her 3 year boyfriend who left her and plus two of her friends left aswell, Joyce health problem so Buffy had so much going on and Riley did cause more drama in her life.

I agree when people said when Xander spoke to her she thought 'If I can't be with Angel then I can be with Riley' she finally realised there was still love for him but was too late, later that season I think Buffy knew she couldn't love Riley the way she did with Angel, I mean at Joyce's funeral did Riley come back to look after Buffy? No, but Angel did even what happened with the whole Riley/Faith situation 🙂

I felt bad for Riley though 🙁

Im not a riley's fan and i'm not sure she loves him.
At the beginning, i think she loved him but at the end, i don't think.
For me, all as changed for her when he lost his "power" his "strenght".
