Question Did Buffy REALLY love Spike?

I have a tendancy to use strong words, but my point is, shippers wear their goggles while watching the show, the goggles make them interpret things that way, & they're not aware that they're wearing any goggles. everytime those shippers watch the show, they come up with a new idea to undermine the competing ship, or use out of context phrases to make an argument for their ships, sometimes they even use pictures to show some character doing a signal or having a "look" during a particular scene.

And that's what makes discussions fun and the debate never ending! 😀 However, and this might sound hard to believe, but I can take off my "shipping goggles" and approach a scene with an unbiased eye if necessary. I just enjoy what I see when I wear these goggles, if that's what you would call it, lol. Maybe binoculars is the better analogy, lol!

However, its still funny watching arguments between Bangels & Spuffies, I find the arguments kinda humorous.

I'm with ya in that I find it hilarious when some people think Buffy wasn't in love with Spike. 😉 It use to get me kind of mad, but I just find it funny now. 😀

so far, you seem like you have half your goggles off, you still have the Spuffy bias, but you're not so much against Bangel like the rest.

not just that, sometimes someone comes up & says Buffy loved Spike back in S2 & that's why she didn't kill him, this one in particular had me cracking for 10 minutes. there are a lot of silly hilarious arguments between shippers. the good thing about it is that both arguments sometimes get very hilarious. another one had me LMAO was "Buffy was with Spike but she was always thinking of Angel", & they used Spike's words in "Destiny" for that argument.

pretty hilarious.

I've always said that I appreciate Bangel for what it is and/or was, specifically in s1 and s2. I don't think Buffy and Angel should ever get back together though, not because I love Spuffy, but because I don't think Buffy and Angel complement each other well. I may have a Spuffy "bias," but it's only because the fangirl in me LOVES their story so much more. 😀

Yeah, those particular arguments are pretty extreme and I would disagree with both of them. There's always going to be shippers with their own viewpoints, even if other shippers don't necessarily agree. 🙂

in my opinion, she shouldn't end up with any of them, lets face it, none of them is his own man when they're around her.

thats the point, when shippers argue, its usually a disagreement-fest. & the more those shippers disagree, the more hilarious the arguments get, & its good enough for me to read & enjoy lol.

Totally agree that Buffy shouldn't be with any of them!

I take a similar point but flipped. lol

From my point of view, it comes down to the fact that that I have a hard time seeing Buffy with either of them from where the show ended. When I think about it, I side with Bangel because I could see that maybe happening in the future while I can't see Spike and Buffy ever happening in the future.... and honestly, I don't like what Spuffy did to Spike and Buffy as characters. I realize I'm completely biased due to the fact that I also enjoyed Buffy and Angel's relationship a lot more than Spike and Buffy's, but I just judge the show on what I saw like everyone else does. To me, Spuffy had its place in time like all her relationships did, but they weren't really meant to stay together.

I haven't watched Season 6 or 7 in awhile , but this is what I think of each main man in Buffy's life. (Please note, I don't support any of the 'ships more than the other, though it may appear so because of my name, etc. That is just due to my lack of imaginination with a username, so I just kept up with the theme.) I'll keep the first two in a nutshell, because this thread is mainly about Spike. Each relationship defined love in a different way:

Angel: Buffy and Angel loved each other in the purest way possible. I believe they are soulmates (har har), and it is reiterated throughout the series that Angel and Buffy's love is forever and that they will always have a connection.

Riley: I think Buffy loved the idea of Riley - he was the closest she could ever have to a regular life. I think that as she delved further into what a Slayer really is, she realized (though not aware of it right away) that Riley isn't what she needed in a man.

Spike: In Season 6, I don't think it was "love", per say. It was addiction, depression, and attraction. Buffy had no one to relate to, no one to talk to, and no one that really knew the dark place she was in, except for Spike. She needed to be with someone who was in the same place as she was and could relate to her. She knew Spike loved her and would let her use him with no questions asked. I believe Buffy had feelings for Spike and cared for him, but I don't think what was going on here could really be called love at that point.

In Season 7, Spike had his soul, so I think that opened up a whole new ball game. Buffy wasn't just using him to get her kicks anymore - she was truly concerned for him and looked to him for affirmation. They were supportive of each other and sought each other out in their times of need. I believe their relationship evolved into love during this season.

As for the lines in "Chosen", I do believe Buffy meant what she said. I wonder if Spike replied in the way he did because he always seems to be comparing/judging his relationship with Buffy with her relationship with Angel. He is saying, "Thanks for saying that, but you don't love me like you love Angel" or something to that effect. That's my reationale for it, because after everything that had happened up to that point, I believe Buffy showed him over and over again that she truly cares for him. I am a believer in actions speaking louder than words.

I think Spike loved Buffy but she didn't love him. In "Chosen" Buffy says something like "I love you" and Spike says "No you don't, but thanks for saying it". This showed me that Buffy loved Spike the same way she loves Xander and Giles, not in a romantic way, but in a friendship way

Why does Spike saying that negate Buffy's feelings? He's not Buffy. For all his understanding of her, he can't read her mind. I've never understood why Spike's denial is used as proof that Buffy doesn't love him.

I'll never understand it either, especially considering everything that is going on with that scene.

Every time that the subject of whether or not Buffy REALLY loved Spike, this quote is brought up. Yes, Spike did say those immortal words, "No, you don't. But thanks for saying it." The question here is whether or not Buffy loved Spike, not whether or not Spike believed her when she said it.

No one, not even the most dedicated Spuffy shipper, has any doubt whatsoever that Buffy meant exactly what she said at the end of Season 2, despite the fact that she punctuated her statement at that time with 3 feet of steel through Angel's chest. Never, in the entire 7 years of the show, nor in the Season 8 comic books, has Buffy EVER lied about loving someone. If she says it, she means it, and she puts no qualifiers on it. If she had stood there with the hellmouth falling around her, holding Spike's flaming hand, and said, "I'll always think of you as my very best friend," then I would have no problem accepting that as the truth.

But she didn't.

Buffy stood there, looked Spike squarely in the eye, and told him that she did, indeed, love him. Why, at that moment, which I have no doubt that she sincerely believed would be the last time that she would ever see him, would she even consider lying to him about something as serious as that? That's not charity, and Buffy knew fully well that Spike would ever expect or want something like that. It was either the absolute truth or the most cruel, heartless thing that she could have ever done to him.

I prefer to believe that she was both truthful and literal, and that being anything else at a time like that would have been totally impossible for a person of Buffy's character to even consider, let alone do.

And lest we forget, if Buffy actually WAS lying to Spike, who's to say that she didn't tell that same lie to another vampire under similar circumstances? I prefer to believe that she was absolutely truthful on both occasions, to both men.

I am so liking you A LOT right now! :)
Right folks. Buffy loved everyone, just view, here me out. She died twice, nearly died god knows how many other time. She did that out of love , for mankind for demons, vampires witches you name it.

Spike however different kind of love, she is damaged goods, she likes the bad boys, hence why Riley didn't work out. Spike was indeed the original bad boy, sure you may say Angeleus but then he wasn't a bad boy but a twisted sadistic one.

Spike loved the world, the music the smell. Just the humanity of it all, made him part of something, which he really wasn't anything in mommys dying arms but a beaten male.

Buffy loves him because he's closer to be being human than what sometimes she is. Angel has his risks if she gets to close. Spike really didn't. He a goof as well he wasn't serious about much with Riley and Angel everything was serious. Spike has his warning label written in huge writing all over that swingy black number he loves to wear.

Sure maybe you think Buffy lied to spike when he destroyed himself for everyone, but I don't. Everyone loves people close to them for different ways sometimes you just don't realise it because soon they will be gone.
