I've been rewatching the show (I'm in the middle of season three) and I've developed a new appreciation for Xander/Cordy.

I'm not sure where I stand on this issue myself...but what do you guys think? Did Cordelia love Xander? What about vice versa?

I think she was just about falling in love with him when she caught him cheating.

I don't think he loved her but he definitely found a deeper appreciation of her once he lost her.

I don't think he loved anyone romantically until Anya, and with Cordy i think it wasn't until Angel that she actually loved someone in the romantic sense. Don't get me wrong, I know Xander had strong feelings for Buffy, Willow, and maybe even Cordy to a lesser extent but I don't think it should be considered being in love exactly. Between Xander and Willow it was the classic "We have been best friends our whole lives and feel like we should give it a shot" which never amounts to anything, and with Buffy it was probably more of a lust thing that grew to more but by the time he loved her it was a familial love not a romantic one. I think Cordy's feelings could have eventually grown to love for Xander but by the time she broke up with him I think it was still a high school crush/ physical thing.

I concur with both the above answers.
It was more like they were in love with hating each other if that makes any sense. Until Angel Cordelia never really loved other than herself, in those days a boyfriend meant a caterer to her every whim and was nice to look at thus making others jealous. Having hung out with "the loser group" for so long she may have felt she had to settle with Xander and since he didn't fit the profile she had made it her mission to make him.

In the love factor, Xander is much the same. He mostly just wanted anything beautiful and if you look at the pattern in his attractions including Cordelia as well as Buffy and Ms. French the praying mantis demon you might say that being out of his reach was something that attracted him. It's also possible that Cordelia was an outlet for his anger with the whole Buffy/Angel thing.

As Kean stated however their feelings for each other had begun to grow genuine just when Xander kissing Willow had broken them up. The locket that Xander had given her had been that turning point in their relationship, when they both realized it was real between them because Xander had invested so much concern over weather or not it was the right gift and Cordelia felt the affection behind it so much that his betrayal was probably the first time a guy had truly broken her heart. Even then she had still treasured that locket as if mourning their relationship. It was obvious on her face that she had not wanted to comply when he demanded it back.
By that time Xander had gained new respect for her so that it actually hurt him to have caused her pain. It was probably a first for him as well.

Even by the end it had not been love, not yet though if Xander had not kissed Willow it probably would have gotten there if something else didn't break them up. It had only grown at that point to true affection.

The only one Cordy had ever felt a true love for was Angel which sadly was never even able to find a starting point let alone worked out, and the same of Xander for Anya which also did not have a happy ending.

Cordelia and Groo seems to be the only pairing that would have included Cordelia. She said that Xander had grown on her "like a Chia pet", but that is not necessarily love.

I think Cordy loved Xander in a highschool way. What I mean by this is that she thought she was in love but would probably realize later in life that it wasn't the real thing. I think that has happened to most people in highschool. Usually the person will always hold a special place in their heart but they more so loved them as compared to being in love with them (if that makes sense).

For Xander, I don't even thing it was that, I think he was more in love with the idea of being in love and dating the queen bee. I mean, Cordy was willing to date a fish monster, but what did Xander do for her, he went and cheated, it's pretty self explanatory.

That is so true I mean when she thought Xander had turned she was genuinely upset and even though her dating comment was probably the writers rearing their comedic heads its still true that she would have tried to get him back or make it work (the doubt dripping off me as I write that), but either way that early in their relationship it did show that Cordy was invested.

I absolutely think Cordy loved Xander, but I don't think he loved her back.

She gave up her friends and popularity for him, stood up to Harmony, and was willing to date him as a fish. Those things are huge for the 16 year old queen bee. She also brings him up later in life when talking about how vulnerable she'll allow herself to be in relationships...Xander was definitely a meaningful relationship to her. It may not have panned out in the long run, but I believe she loved him.

She loved him. Do you hear me?! Do you?! SHE LOVED HIM!
Seriously, though, yeah. She loved him. Just because it was in high school
doesn't mean it wasn't love. I was crushed when Xander and Cordy broke
up. I thought it was a great pairing, personally. I also think Xander had a
growing love for Cordy, and like one poster already said, didn't really appreciate
how he felt until he lost her.....

I think she was beginning to love him before it fell apart. It was always interesting watching her give up who she was for someone that really would never have been on her radar before. It was a sweet relationship and I always was sad to see it go. I always like to think what might have been if Cordy had stayed on Buffy after season 3 and Xandar hadn't cheated on her with Willow.

I am thinking that Xander probably didn't love her, though. It was just attraction but then I think part of him got bored and that's why he started seeing Willow in a different way. I know he didn't mean to hurt Cordy in that way but I think he wasn't ready for any real commitments at that time in his life.

I think Xander and Cordelia had strong feelings for each other. I mean honestly Cordelia was popular and she picked Xander who was less than popular, proving there was something there. Xander not only was jealous of Wesley, but cared about Cordie enough to pay off the rest of her Prom dress so she could be happy. These are not things that people do for no reason. They cared about each other pretty deeply in their own way. Whether or not they were in love is up to the individual, but I think they were at least starting to go in that direction.

Agree. You said it about as well as I wanted to... I think she thought she loved him, and truly believed that until she was older and realized it wasn't the real thing.
