Well, Sunnydale High is literaly (on) hell. Also there is the metaphor of high school being hell, and everybody is just trying to survive it. Okay, on Buffy it's literally the case. But in real life, high school can be close to hell, or make you feel like in hell.

How do/did feel about high school (in your real life)? Was it tough, or the best time of your life?

I did NOT like high school. It was tough both academically and socially. I have a learning disability so academically it was tough for me. Socially, I had trouble. Frequently being called weird. I absolutely never fit in. I was a loner.

Still in middle school at the moment... I'm pretty sure that middle school is worse than high school. 😉 It's fun enough, but never good to be caught in the middle! I can't wait 'til High School, so many new opportunities. 🙂

Academically I had no problems at all. Socially I should have liked it as I was really popular, but hated the fact that there was never any escape from everybody and I could never be left alone. I like peace and quiet. The best thing was the various girls that were interested in me and of course the fact that Buffy was on while I went so I got to watch it (on first broadcast) with a load of friends, which is the kind of thing you can't easily arrange once you are older and working.

I'm still in High School. I'm not loving it, but I don't hate it either. I loved it in first two years, now it just became boring. I can't wait for university, for something new! 🙂

High school was...meh. It went okay, I did well in classes (graduated top of my class), but meh overall.

College was more fun - more freedom, more friends who were like-minded.

I didn't hate high school at all. Sure, some tough times, it was like a jungle but it was nice. It's there I met my best friends so it was an important time of my life.
I was the teacher's pet with almost all my teachers and pretty much everybody knew me (tough I suspect I was more known as "That weird girl who doesn't dress or act like anybody else").

But when I finally entered university, I realized high school was not half as great.

To start with, even if we had different "section" in high school (scientific, math, latin...) we had a lot of classes we didn't choose, which were compulsory for everyone (like math).

It was also a place where difference was immediatly noticed and easily mocked. All the people I know, including me, changed a lot since they left that school. Some went to another school before the term and went in a more...technic education. And those people literally blossom. Some get a lot of piercing, some get clothed like in a manga, some dye their hair...As far as I'm concerned, I wear the dresses I want to, I wear what I want because I don't have controls anymore. Seriously, they could force students to get back home if they had a capri shorts (boys) or a under the knee skirt (girls).

Everything was also too controlled in my opinion. I'm a well upbrought kid but it's not the case with everybody. In high school, we are really punished for everything and anything. Forgot your book? You lose points. Arrive late? You lose points. Dream in class? You lose points. We also would lose point if we didn't go to school and didn't have a certificate. Which always annoyed me because if you just vomit all day long, if you don't want to lose points, you have to go to the doctor and pay 20$ to have a certificate which says "The student couldn't come to school because of nasty vomit". So I was always going to school, no matter how sick I was (that changed a bit, as it's not punished in university to not come).

I understand that those mesures must be taken when the kids are young and still...Wild (the youngest, the wildest at my school). But once you are 16, 17, 18...It's just annoying to still be treated like a child. It's really since I'm at university I can consider myself a young adult. I have more freedom. I don't go to school because I have to but because I want to. It's a whole different dynamic!

XD nasty vomit certificate! lolz
I didn't mind it. I wasn't one of the popular kids, but I had my circle of friends and got along with most people, so I wasn't a loner either. Academically speaking, I never had any trouble either, so except for all the teenage angst I guess it was an ok time. I still like uni better, though.

I was so busy in high school I didn't have time to agonzie whether it was living up to expectations or not, honestly. I took college classes for extra credit and graduated in three years instead of four. I also worked all though high school as well as being involved with drama club. I had a few close friends, and people liked me, but wasn't insanely popular.

The years from 5th-10th grade were really bad (a good deal of that time is a blurry, hazy memory to me, I'm just basically glad it's over and done with), but 11th-13th grade was one of the best times of my life. I basically dropped into a deep hole of depression after graduation, took me 13 years to feel as good again. Even to this day - though my life is now, finally, even considerably better than it was in those three years - I have frequently recurring dreams of going back to school with the 11-13th grade bunch, just for fun.

Well, high school is 14 - 17 years old, right? In Sweden we've got "högstadiet" from 13 -15 and then "gymnasiet" from 16 - 18, so I don't know how well it translates, but:

I didnt like högstadiet that much. I had friends, and I wasn't bullied, but I didn't feel comfortable or "safe" if that makes sense. I had an eating disorder at the time too and this was the time it was worst, so to be honest I spent most of the time with a) starving myself and or throwing up (do NOT try that at home kids 🙂)and b) getting drunk and making out with random people. It was fun sometimes though, it wasn't all doom and gloom, but I would never do it again.

First year of gymnasiet sucked, but year 2 and 3 was great. I became close friends with the people that are now My very best friends and My sisterhood, and they changed everything. Also, gymnasiet was way different from högstadiet, people weren't mean Or trying to be cool anymore. It was a huge change, and something I'm glad happened.

hmm, school...

haven't thought about high school in a very long time...

yeah, guess i enjoyed it... made some stupid choices and had some fun, generally typical teenage life i guess... was alright, if i could go back and do it over, i definitely would

My school, I don't have much problems. I'm at the top of my classes [not to sound arrogant], I have brilliant friends and this school is opening up so many opportunities for me. I get to participate in musicals, they have a work program that will help me get my first job, and next year, I'm going to France for an exchange program.
The problem I have with the school are the people. I won't deny that I'm socially awkward and a wallflower. I say things I don't mean without thinking and that gets me into trouble with some of my classmates.

No matter how hard I tried to get good grades and do well in tests... I'm like Buffy, I don't test well. I never ever got a high grade (besides art class), even if I knew the material and worked hard to get the good grades. So at some point I just didn't care anymore. I didn't like school at all, but I do miss it today.
I wasn't one of the popular kids, but I did have friends. I even had two groups to hand with at some point (and they didn't even like each other, I stood in the middle). But I was hurt by other popular girls (with the boys I never had problems, girls can be very bitchy). I think it was all because I was insecure and had very low self-esteem. And people took advantage of that, and they walked over me.

I really liked though, that in one year I had yoga class. yes! For two hours, in the middle of the day (well, the 2 almost last classes), we'd relax. Then after class we had Bio, which I really liked, because of the high stools, the nice teacher, and the fact that we didn't do much there. Being affected by the yoga class right before, it was really easy going to another class afterwards.
I had a problem though, when we learned about the human body from the inside, they brought in a fake skeleton (named Johny), and my back hurt everytime I saw the bones. That's why I try not to look at bones or skeletons, ever!

yoga class? That's so cool!
Year 8 I was reasonably popular, in with the right crowd, exceeding well beyond my year level academically and having a not bad time. Unfortunately in Year 9 I did have to kind of make a choice of what person I wanted to be - hanging out with the popular kids (who at my school were all drop kicks, some were involved in hardcore drugs and having pregnancy scares already), or doing well in classes.

I decided to start hanging out with all the smart kids in my classes (in the top classes) and the popular kids dropped me quicker then you could say 'American stereotype'.

The rest of high school was an absolute nightmare. I hated hated HATED it. I got picked on by the cricket academy (the jocks of our school), the girls didn't understand me, I ended up depressed, which resulted in me getting bad skin, which resulted in me becoming more depressed, which resulted in me being a brat at home...

Basically - high school sucked, which is why I felt like I had to leave at the end of Year 10. The bullies never got their comeuppance, and I feel like I was bullied out of a decent education and future...

That sounds almost like Veronica Mars
Sweden has a different system as This Year's Girl explained in a previous post, and I hated it, all of it. I was bored so I skipped most of it and my grades are terrible which is why I have to make up for them now. and I was bullied a lot too when I was younger..

I hated high school.... seriously It was aweful. I was in honnors everything and the bad part about that was my math sucked. They couldn't just put me in a regular math class and keep me in honors everything so it was either... I excelled at everything but failed math which would hold me back... or I got so bored with the regular classes cause I knew everything that I failed those but excelled in math which again would hold me back. Eventually I just quit and then just got my GED which was just so much easier because it allowed me to work at my own pace. Plus the only thing i had to actually study was Math. However I will say doing it that way makes you miss out on so much and you sorta regret it later. I would have loved to go to prom and have those other good experiences like graduation with all your friends. Sure I walked across a stage in a cap and gown and got a diploma but there was no good friends to celebrate with and take pictures with and remember good times with afterwards.

High School was very very hard for me. Not because of the academics, but because I moved 3 times lol. I was accepted to a "Higher Learning"/Standardized College Placement High School. That was in Rhode Island. Then we moved to Puerto Rico and I was in a totally different environment. I had to learn all the Spanish slang and stuff.. Then after a year at that one school, I transferred to another about 20 miles away. So you can only imagine! But even after all the moving, I still graduated Valedictorian.

Socially however, I was very awkward. At first I was very popular in RI. Then when I moved to Puerto Rico, I started being a loner. But I don't regret any of it.

I was on the basketball team, swim team, track team, and volleyball team. Loved all of them 🙂

Could have been better, could have been worse, but I wouldn't have changed any of it 😀
