In Surprise did Angel know that if he would have pure happienies(sp?) he would become Angelus?

I can imagine that Angel knew about the pure happiness thing, but didn't imagine that pure happiness would be so easy to find. I mean... maybe he thought that to find pure happiness would be harder than just sleeping with Buffy... I don't know how to explain this, but to have pure happiness I personally would need more than just making love to the one I love... maybe Angel also thought it would take more to experience pure happiness. Am I making any sense here?
