I've always believed that there has to be a limit to how far back even Joss can plan things. That at least some of the plots that supposedly began years before they culminate must be done at least partially in hindsight, retconning details to fit with newly established canon. However, sometimes I notice things in old episodes that seem so perfectly consistent with later developments that it makes me wonder if Joss really did write his characters storylines years in advance.
For example, I watched Becoming recently on FX. It's one of my favourite double episodes so I've seen it a hundred times before but this time something Whistler said to Buffy made me realise something.
Nobody saw this going down this way? Not even the PtB? In fact, as far as everyone was concerned it was to be Angel himself that stopped Acathla from waking, presumably from a plan set in motion by Spike and Drusilla.
Which begs the question, what changed? How did events change so radically that the Powers were caught unawares? Could it be that Jasmine was already tinkering with things so that Angel would be in the right place for her plans?
For all things to go the way she needed she had to be certain that Angel would leave Sunnydale and head to L.A. so ensuring that he and Buffy were split up would have been essential. Turning him in Angelus again would be a great way to make this happen.
So was that night at least partly controlled by Jasmine? Did she make certain that they would end up in bed together? Did she influence Spike to bring the Judge to Sunnydale? That would also explain why he was willing to risk the Judge destroying humanity and the world when we know that he actually didn't want this world destroyed, as shown in Becoming.
So, lucky script accident or intentional story planning? Either way it makes for incredible continuity.

It wasn't supposed to go down like this. Nobody saw you coming. I figured this for Angel's big day. But I thought he was here to *stop* Acathla, not to bring him forth. Then you two made with the smoochies... now he's a creep again.
