Did Jenny Calendar Renounce her people?

It feels after a bit, like she did is this just my imagination?

She called her uncle "Awful" and really seemed like she she didnt care about some girl he killed over a century ago, after a bit.

Its a fascinating question that would only be relevant if she was still alive, still any guesses?

Jenny was sent to Sunnydale by her people specifically to keep an eye on Angel. I don't think she really would have followed their orders if she 'renounced' them.

I think her time in Sunnydale shifted her stance on how she viewed Angel. She liked him, she thought he was a good guy and she didn't agree when her uncle wanted to pull her off of her so-called 'assignment'. But I do think she believed she was doing the right thing in making sure Angel's curse stayed in place. She can't really watch him 24/7 though, so it's understandable why she was mad when her uncle told her she'd failed. If she didn't care about the girl, if she didn't care what happened to her people, if she didn't care that Angel paid for what Angelus did, she would have left, she wouldn't have been sending information back to them and keeping them up-to-date on what was happening and she wouldn't have tried to re-ensoul Angelus.

I think maybe you're confusing the character with the actress who played her. Robia Lamore-however-it's-spelt is a very religious person and didn't agree with a lot of the stuff that happened on the show after she left. She was very upset when she realized that she was basically playing the devil incarnate when she returned in S3. She said that if she'd known what the part actually entailed, she never would have agreed to return. However, she's a very professional person and agreed to uphold and fulfill the terms of her contract. But it's interesting to note that she never returned to the show.

I think its clear Jenny Calander was conflicted, she'd obviously embraced the modern world and all its trappings and yet she was in Sunnydale because of some hundred year old curse.
Until her Uncle interfered she seemed content to leave Angel be because he was doing good and was still atoning for his crime. I don't think she got the whole 'vengeance' thing at all, but she understood tradition, and she did obey her Uncle quite readily.

After his death, she was more concerned with making amends with Buffy and Giles than avenging her Uncle's murder or obeying any of the wishes of her people.
I think, if she had lived, she wouldn't have stayed that close to her roots/people, at all.

Why would she stay close to her people, after what they did. They are clearly very self-obsessed and selfish people: vengeance was their only concern, no matter what the cost. I think I would have broke free of their shackles too, also, technically it is kind of her people's fault that she gets killed.

The interesting thing for me is that despite Angelus killing her uncle and Jenny, none of her people resurface to deliver more vengeance. They were willing to continue with a 100 year old feud, but faded away when a new crime was committed against them, seems strange to me.

This reminds me of a question that I have always had about Jenny, once it was revealed what her "real" reason for being in Sunnydale was. Well, two, actually, the first being whether or not her initial flirting with Giles was just to get closer to the resident Watcher, assuming that she actually knew that that was what he was, but, mainly, why didn't she, once she knew the real story about Angel actually being one of the good guys, just tell him who she was and warn him (it was pretty obvious what was happening between him and Buffy, and where it was almost certain to lead) about the consequences of his one moment of perfect happiness? She wouldn't have had to tell anyone besides him, so her "cover" would remain intact, but if Angel had known in advance, Spike would have remained the greatest threat in Season 2, and Buffy would have wound up staking...

Never mind. It's a stupid question anyhow. Joss' idea was the best way for the season to work out. It couldn't have worked out better in the end. Beautiful, romantic, dramatic, sad, heart breaking, just perfect in every way.

Great job, Joss. You're a frackin' genius, man. A frackin' genius.

I guess the whole curse thing is a big logic fail if you think about it too hard. (why didn't the gypsy's tell Angel that the curse could be broken so he could avoid doing so- terrified of becoming that monster again. And why did the curse have a perfect happiness clause in it to begin with?)
Luckily the writing is so good it kind of papers over the cracks of the plot hole, instead making it a gut-wrnching plot twist that puts out little slayer through the emotional wringer and gives DB a chance to be the best evil vampire of the season. (narrowly beating Spike and Dru imo)

From what I recall, I don't think Jenny was aware of the "soul loss" clause of the curse- I could be wrong, but that's the impression I got. I assumed that she thought that she was watching Angel and keeping tabs on him because her clan wanted him to suffer, or in case he came seeking revenge, but because he fights on the good side, saves her life, etc. she reports his activities back to her family but doesn't really do anything to hinder his happiness, or keep him away from Buffy- that only happens once her Uncle shows up and starts giving her a hard time.

I could have got this wrong of course, but it would certainly explain why Jenny never tells Buffy and Angel about the curse.

I'm almost positive her Uncle tells her in a fit of exposition.
Way its phrased, Her uncle is telling her something she didnt know before.

And why not Tell him?

First few years, he probaly would have WELCOMED being rid of his soul.

Dont know how easily he could have FOUND true happiness, but...

Only after the flashback in Angel the series where he refused to feed on a infant, at Darlas invitation "I will not pretend to be what I am not" do I think his reensoulment became Egosyntonic. (In harmony with his idealized self image

Another problem?

Willow You'd think would have been investigating day and night, a way to Rewrite the curse, to REMOVE the True happiness clause.

Am I being cynical?

But Ive never so much as heard that she's stumped on such research.

I really like the picture of Angel Tightly bound, as the Curse is removed, then over hours relaid... with Angelus making one last desperate effort to turn people against each other, and intimidate them.

I find myself wondering exactly why that Rom girl was so special! Did she crap gold coins? Did she deal drugs - or better yet cook them from recipes lost by her murder? How were the Rom the people Angel hurt most? I can understand the curse but to send someone to watch Angel throughout his life is overkill - and to just send someone to Sunnydale is very weird.

Besides that, I have some knowledge of the Rom. No proper Rom girl/woman would be sent to watch over a man, would be living on her own, or would be that far from her family. And have an uncle who appears to have been raised Amish.

Oh, and the Chumash do still exist too. 😉

Chumash? maybe you meant Kalderash?

Sorry - talking about Pangs, which reported that the Chumash were wiped out. I believed that until I happened to drive by their reservation. Although the Kalderash do exist, too. I'm more familiar with the Lowara

How are the Chumash or Pangs connected with this issue? I'm a bit lost now, did I miss something?

Sorry - just a quip.....didn't mean to confuse.😱

A wild guess?

The girl may have been a scion of a great lineage or marked by some prophecy?

Sorry if I am being too argumentative here - this is just sort of a pet peeve.

Prophecy - not likely. By and large Rom cultivate the appearance as mystics to have a trait to sell but that is for gajos. Romani actually believe fortune telling is a danger, that it leads people to become irrational. Their religion is a mixture of Christianity and common beliefs. They do have some superstitions but seeing the future in any way is not one of them. Lineage is also not really a major issue - at least not pre-WWII. While anyone can fool the gajo by claiming to be King of the Gypsies, in fact there was no central authority except for the court which convened occasionally. Think of water drops sliding around and down a window - that is how the various kumpanias (groups - usually extended family - in wagons called vardos) moved, and joined, and broke apart, and came together. It's a really beautiful culture.

Did Jenny Calendar renounce her people? Unfortunately not.

Any culture that claims the right to coerce people into propagating a vendetta deserves to be renounced. What is the payoff for a vendetta? Angel has already been cursed with a soul. He has been tortured for a century. His punishment has outlasted the people who imposed it.

She would not be able to say much to Giles or Buffy without blowing her cover as an expert on the curse and a person of interest to be investigated just like any other demon. And as has been pointed out, she may have been sent to spy on Buffy but may not have been aware of the escape clause of the curse. Angel certainly didn't seem to be aware of it. This may have been an unfortunate property of the curse that was there but not useful in the same sense that people have an appendix but it actually has little purpose other than to cause trouble.
