Did someone watch the Oscars?

So I decided to stay up last night (and early morning) to watch the Academy Awards. This was the first time I've watched it from beginning to end. It was great, mostly thanks to Seth MacFarlane for being an awesome host!

Did anyone else watch it? What did you think about the winners etc? I thought they were all well deserving though I had wished that Lincoln had snatched the Best Picture award. Don't get me wrong, I do love Argo, but I just thought Lincoln was a better movie quality wise. Argo is the kind of movie you watch once, because one of the best things about Argo is the suspense.

But Daniel Day Lewis did pick up the best leading actor role, setting an academy record! Gratz! He deserved it. I only wished TLJ would have won the supporting role. Waltz is awesome but I do think TLJ was slightly better. Speaking of Django, was very pleased to see Tarantino receive his well deserved best original screenplay award. He's such an awesome dude! He's was pretty much the only unique person in there! When he said this was the year of the writers (so many good nominees) it gave me a boost in confidence for some reason. I wasn't nominated (sadly lol) but being a writer, and hearing it from one of my idols just gave me some extra motivation!

No surprise Lawrence picked up the best leading actress award, and I think she was the best of them all, though I must admit I've only seen Beasts of the Southern Wild of the other nominees. Wallis was great in BotSW but I do think her nomination was more of an acknowledgment for talented child actors/actresses.

Also glad to see that 3 swedes picked up Oscars this year! 😀 That's more than what Lincoln got (sadly)!

I didn't watch. We got home from our visit this weekend at 7:45, so I immediately turned it on to AMC to see "The Walking Dead". 😉

I didn't watch it (mainly due to the time difference) but I watched a lot of the live from the Red Carpet at the after parties and caught up on the general news online. It looks like it was a great night and to see the Les Mis cast (film) singing live at the Oscars looks like a real highlight. I have the highlights programme recorded tonight so I can watch through the best bits.

Our DVR didn't record the last few awards. I think they ran over their time slot because I have heard a few people say this. Anyways, we watched it from beginning to "Best Original Screenplay." Only missing best Actor/Actress, Director, and movie.

I thought it was awesome. Within seconds we had Captain Kirk and the L.A. Gay Men's Chorus group. Followed by many apparences from Harry Potter. Besides the "I Saw Your Boobs" song, I thought Mcfarlane was great; although many say he wasn't classy. I think that man is so classy. He knows when a joke is over and goes back to his 'tv/radio' voice. He is a gentleman.

I was happy that Daniel Day Lewis won and is now the only man to have there Best Actor Oscars. He has been my favorite actor since the 90s. So, with all the music, and special guests, I thought it went pretty well. I see a lot of hate on the morning news about it though.

Afterwards, we finished up with The Walking Dead and maybe 15min of The Talking Dead

Seth MacFarlane was a good host. I loved the beginning, especially seeing William Shatner and Daniel Radcliffe! I liked a little less the musical homage (or whatever). Chicago's good, I guess Dreamgirl is good (although Mercedes in Glee sang "And I am Telling You" a lot better than Jennifer Hudson), but I never had any interest in Les Misérables so I didn't like it that much.

So sad Yan England didn't win for his movie "Henry" though (short action) and how could they give the award for special effect to Life of Pi????? I mean, Avengers wasn't even filmed in NYC and they had to put everything afterward!!!! That has to be rewarded!!! I would have understan if the Hobbit had won, but Life of Pi I can't see why..............

Because The Life of Pi was more of an art film as opposed to the blockbusters that the rest of the visual effects nominees were.

On that topic, Rhythm and Hues, the VFX studio that did the tiger for Life of Pi, went out of business because they never got paid by the studio. Right as the VFX director of that company was bringing it up in his acceptance speech, they cut him off with the Jaws music to rush him offstage, then when he wouldn't stop, they cut him off entirely by muting his microphone.

In addition, most of that company and other VFX artists were protesting outside the Oscars, just off of the Red Carpet. None of that was covered on TV.

Yeah, even Seth MacFarlane at his worst looks classy compared to this. (I thought he was an awesome host. By "at his worst", I'm talking about his animated shows, which I do not like at all.

Yeah I watched the whole thing basically, love the Les Mis medley the cast sang and of course Anne Hathaway looked beautiful as always 😀 Jennifer Lawrence as well.

Yeah, I had the day off so I watched the whole thing. I was really tired though (I went to a festival the day before) so I was kinda just staring at the screen and not really paying attention, haha.

I thought Seth MacFarlane was okay, not bad but sorta "meh" But then I almost always find Oscar hosts to be pretty blah, they never really do a really good job imo. They are either over the top or boring or something most of the time. But its probably a pretty tough gig, so good on him for tackling it I guess.

I was happy for Jennifer Lawrence. I cringed when the poor girl tripped up the stairs, but it kinda made me love her even more for some reason.

I haven't seen Argo yet. The only ones I've seen are Django Unchained and Silver Linings Playbook, but I was happy for Ben Affleck, his speech was kinda nice 🙂

I stayed up and I found that it wasn't worth it. McFarlane gave one of the most misogynist routines I have ever seen. It was slimy kind of comedy that I thought really cheapened the night. It felt more like an audition for the MTV Movie awards than an Oscar ceremony. And seriously, why were they trying SO HARD to make Chicago happen?

What I did enjoy was seeing Jennifer Lawrence win, like the rest of the world I'm completely in love with her and insist she become my new BFF. Equally, I was happy to see Argo win. I couldn't begrudge Daniel Day-Lewis, especially when he continues to give the most charming and classy acceptance speeches you will ever hear.

I loved his way of hosting. He looks and talks like a gentleman but he's still Seth at the end of the day, making fun of everything you're not allowed to make fun of (like women and jews). I found it hilarious. BUT we all have different opinions and different taste in comedy!

I loved Seth as the host - I was just going to watch the monologue but he made me want to keep watching, which never happens. Plus I loved how he also brought in some old Hollywood aspects.

Apparently, Ang Lee has been saying that visual effects should be even cheaper, so this is not exactly something that's going to get better soon, it seems like. Really, this just makes everyone here look bad... except for the fact that almost no one knows about this if they don't follow film news obsessively like I do.

And no, I don't like Family Guy. I've tried to watch three episodes. One I liked (the one that parodied the show Soap), but the other two I had to stop watching because I felt myself getting dumber just from having them playing in the background. I could tell there was a really smart person underneath it, but there's just such a layer of stupidity over top that I could barely, if at all, get past.

I didn't watch. It's usually kind of boring, in my opinion. I watched the highlights on Youtube, though. I'm happy that Daniel Day-Lewis won (that was pretty much guaranteed he was THAT good in "Lincoln,) and thrilled that Anne Hathaway won. She really deserved to win, her performance in "Les Miserables" was fantastic. I'm also thrilled "Argo" won.

Didn't watch it, but I'm totally psyched that Christoph Waltz picked up his second Academy Award! Also really satisfied that Tarantino won Best Original Screenplay.
I haven't seen Lincoln, Argo or Life of Pie, but I totally wanted Spielberg to win Best Director and John Williams Best Score. I only care about awards if some favorites of mine are nominated and Spielberg is one of my favorite directors and Williams one of my favorite composers, so it would have been awesome if they had won.

I got the impression that Seth MacFarlane could have been replaced halfway through the show by Jimmy Fallon and no one would have noticed. Not a bad performance, but not up to Billy Crystal or even Bob Hope, but better than Whoopi Goldberg.

I generally watch for two categories:

Best original screenplay
Best screenplay adapted form another medium

I do not idolize directors as they tend to take credit for everything that works, even though a good screenplay gets you most of the way to a good movie. I was happy to see Tarentino get the nod for screenplay since a movie written by the director at least has some continuity of vision.

On the other hand, you shouldn't give the director too little credit, in my opinion. The movie itself is in the director's hands (or in the producer's, depending on what kind of producer it is). The director can change story elements at the last minute, he or she is responsible for how everything looks in the end, how the actors deliver their lines and all that. Sure, a good script is essential, but don't put it into the wrong director's hands.
