Emotionally, yes they were harmful. Physically, they were not. But you've taken my quote out of context; my point is that the acts themselves do not indicate that Spike did not love Buffy, (it was suggested by another poster that they were harmful to her, ergo he did not love her). Rather, that he could have the kind of consensual, physical relationship he had with her and still love her, because his intention was never to hurt her, either physically or emotionally. When he realized that he wasn't fully capable of accomplishing that, he got his soul.
Buffy was using Spike, however, and that was very harmful (emotionally) to him. She did not exhibit that she loved or respected him in season 6, until she called off their "relationship."

Indeed I may have missed something. I just didn't see the point in differentiating between physical and emotional harm in this case - especially since we already know that physical harm was deliberately part of the sex acts in question.

Even though it may further take the thread off track, I just have to ask, (feel free to PM me if you think that that would be more appropriate) HOW do we know that physical harm was a constant part of Buffy's relationship with Spike? Other than the one time at the end of "Smashed," I don't remember seeing anything that showed or even implied anything like that, and, as far as we actually know, once the sex started, the fighting might very well have stopped. It was implied that their bouts were violent, certainly, but "we missed the bed again" and even the bite and scratch marks on Spike's back don't necessarily give the impression that physical pain was what they were trying to accomplish.

Now.if you had said that their relationship was about using their passion to express, cause, and expel EMOTIONAL harm and mutual humiliation, I could agree. But intentional physical damage? Just wasn't shown.
