In late Btvs Season 3 and in the pilot of "Angel" did you feel sorry for Cordy when she's broke, poor, starving etc? Or was it karma for being a rude bitch in Buffy season 1?

Of course I did. She was rude yes, but she is a kind person with a good heart. She is just very blunt and says what's on her mind. That in no way shape or form means that she deserves to lose everything, including her home. She never did anything nearly bad enough to deserve to be poor and homeless.

Well I wouldn't say that I think it was karma, and I felt sort of sorry for her, but I thought the whole "oh my parents lost all of our money so now I have to become a better person" a very trite storyline. It was a lazy way out from the writers to kick-start Cordy's redemption and make her fit into the Angel series. For me it left me a bit cold and it just felt very contrived.

I felt sorry for her. Even if she was rude in season 1 and 2, noone deserves that. And you saw very well that it hurt her very much! No dad and no money. That was pretty hard for her! I think it was a good development for Cordi. Furthermore one of my favorite Cordi scenes came out of the misfortune. The one when Xander buys Cordi the expensive dress because she hasn't enough money! Very sweet!

I felt sorry for her. I felt, after you get to know her, you realise she was a good person at heart and when she was being mean, it was all about her natural bluntness ( a bit like Anya!) and probably the fact that she was trying to be the queen bee of Sunnydale High and figured she had to act like that to maintain her position. Even if she was mean anyway, I don't think she deserved it and she did become a better person.

I felt bad for her. She was only rude and mean because the highschool life can be brutal. She ran with the wrong crowd and didn't want to give up her popularity, when she was actually a good person underneath it all. It also may have been what she needed to realize that she was spoiled though.

I don't believe in karma(I wish there was such a thing, but until proven...) but that was wonderful to see. Now, during re-watches, I can feel sorry for her because I rember that she will improve. Maybe I even felt that the first time I watched season 1, I can't remember, but now I feel it. But she was such a bitch in season 1-3 of Buffy. In season 1 of Angel as well, but that faded pretty quickly, and she was actually more unintentionally a bitch in that season.

So, yes, it was great to see Cordelia like that. If there was karma, that was it. It still suprises me that someone so cruel as Cordelia could improve to the degree she did(makes me think she knew all along that what she did was very wrong, which doesn't make it better). So it seems like she really needed to go through that phase to grow as a person. It taught her empathy for other people, just like being tortured by visions later that seasons taught her even more.

I did not feel sorry for her at all. She was eighteen, just out of high school and living on her own; her being poor was very realistic. Not many kids who live on their own, right after graduating high school, manage to make enough money to be anything but broke. At least she had a roof over her head, food on her table and a job....that more than some people.

It was good for her to go through that. Made her appreciate things more and taught her to provide for herself.

Yes I of course did. I don't think Cordy was always a rude person I think she did that as a defense mechanism at times. Do I think she deserves to be poor for being rude? Nope not at all. I felt very bad for her. I sometimes wonder is it harder for a once rich person to be poor because they have never struggled.

Actually, I felt sort of hopeful for Cordelia when she started having all of her financial difficulties, because I also saw her facing her (actually her father's) problems and working to overcome them. Strength is built by overcoming resistance, whether it be physical strength or strength of character. Cordelia might have given the impression of being a spoiled bitch, but she was also a strong, basically honest person, the kind who may see adversity as an inconvenience, but never accepts it as an insurmountable barrier.

(And, just in case anyone is wondering, I rarely watched "Angel" until after Season 7 was over, so I didn't know how her character was presented there until then)

Hell no i loved it. Everyone saying 'she didn't deserve that' what? She was hardly sleeping in boxes and begging for food. After all the put downs she gave the 'lesser' people thoughout her life, it was just the kick up the ass she needed.
I agree its exactly what she needed to make her become the strong woman she eventually ended up. But a rich person(who didn't earn it) losing all their mansions and jewellery, oh boo hoo.

I don't think I ever felt sorry for Cordy, for the simple reason that she never felt sorry for herself. Ms. Chase does not do pity. If anything I cheered her on.

I like this answer!!
Yes, I didn't like seeing her in a crappy apartment and eating food from parties. But it worked out in the end because she became part of Angel Investigations and was able to become a better person
