Difference between Houses?

Is there actually a different between the various houses? Or is the only difference which members are admitted into it? How does the sorting take place really random or like the HP-hat based on personality or something?

I think I've heard at some point that it's just as random as a computer can do random, so nothing really but ones and zeros behind the placing of people. Haven't been to any other house than my own, but i would think that the only differences are the differences people make by being themselves.

The sorting is all done purely at random by the Sorting Tome, the staff do not choose who gets into what house.
