Disappearing Fan Fiction Sites

(I'm posting this here because it applies to fan fiction in general, not just "our" sites)

I've noticed over the past year or so that when I try to visit some of my favorite Fan fiction sites, whether they be devoted to Buffy, Highlander, or those devoted to any of the other several topics that I used to, that they either haven't had anything new posted in years, or no longer exist at all. Vampire's Kiss, The S&B Diaries, There Can Be Only One, and others have apparently shut down, either for lack of funding, lack of contributing authors, lack of readers, or any combination of the three. Only a few, like the Spuffy Realm and, of course, the Fan Fiction Network, remain. Is this because everything is now being published on the Live Journal Network (where I very rarely, if ever, go) or is the whole concept of fan fiction going the way of the dodo bird, the wooly mammoth, and the great American bison?, like the Spuffy Realm and, of course, the Fan Fiction Network

The sites are disappearing. 🙁 Makes me very sad.

I tried to start a project called Save the Fics. I and a friend contacted writers, asked if we could save and share their work and upload it online for everyone to read it, years from now. We were going to do this with as many writers as possibly, but life got in the way. So now I'm just saving the fics to my own personal collection.

It's hard to say. Fanfic.net will probably be the longest running one to always have people putting new fanfic on,more so because it has a fanfic topic for just about everything.

It's hard to say. I think a lot of it is because authors stop publishing new fanfic or they have unfinished one's which leads to people moving on to different websites.

But i don't think there's a specific reason for it to be honest. As people get jobs etc and in general just have more things to do then views and authors will decline due to having less time. I think there will always be several fanfic websites that will be popular,but i think a lot of the one's that are based on a specific genre will be decline.

I can think of about 5 Spuffy sites that are still running, so I haven't noticed lack of those. But when I go looking for Smallville fanfiction sites, quite a few have gone under. Oh! And the first fanfiction I ever read was X-files and back when I was reading that, I knew of at least 10 sites. Maybe one of them is left now, it makes me sad. 🙁
