Discussing Fanfic: We Will Remember Them... by Lilachigh

Did anyone who's finished it pick up on the fairy-tale reference(s)?

It reminds me a bit of the movie TheGreat Escape

I think you're right - not necessarily with that particular film but I think it's drawing on movies for its tone.

Edit To Add: I wondered, how you`d pronounce this: a Fljeeisj demon 🙂

Interesting! TBH - I'd probably pronounce it in the same way I'd pronounce Fleisch (with a vey bad accent).

I have finished it.

I have to admit, that I got a bit tired at the end of all that running around to the chateau and from the chateau and Buffys "yeez" became too much. I also did not understand, if Buffy had been sent back to save Spike (who wouldn`t have been in danger, if she hadn`t been sent back) or to save Aurora. Although the chip was a very important step on Spikes path to reformation, I found that the writer put too much emphasis on it.

I liked the idea of Spike building a vampire army and fighting behind the lines against the Germans. And it still was very well written and an intriguing Story. I would probably rate it 6/10, maybe 7/10.

As for the historical context. It is always difficult, to write anything romantic, thrilling or funny during the time of WWII. Still it does happen a lot. The Great Escape is an example. Why We Fight is another example. And even Star Trek has ist own Nazi episode.
You are always in danger of trivializing the crimes against humanity, the horrors of the WWII and the Holocaust if you choose do write within that specific period of time. The writer decided not touch the topic of the Holocaust, except for mentioning once or twice the crimes that were being committed by humans against humans. It is probably not the best way to handle it, but I can accept it. It could have been done much worse.

@TriBel : I noticed the remark about Hänsel and Gretel rooftops, but other than that I missed any fairy tale references. Which ones did you notice ?

Hänsel and Gretel rooftops
Thanks - I hadn't got that one! Google the meaning of the baby's name! - this should do it. Aurora name meaning

Amongst other things (!) - she's Disney's Sleeping Beauty (a princess?). Sleeping Beauty is also Briar Rose (not sure where I'm going with that - if anywhere).

Gastonet – I googled but it only ever came up as Gaston et. Gaston was a character In Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. He “serves as a foil personality to the Beast, who was once as vain as Gaston prior to his transformation. Gaston both physically and emotionally embodies hypermasculinity. In direct contrast to his adversary the Beast, Gaston is depicted as handsome with an unattractive personality”. Bear with me. Vampires – indeed many monsters – have Beauty and the Beast as their founding text. Marina Warner says the first “Beast” was the god Eros – and I’ve been figuring Spike in this role since before I joined the boards so I’m more than happy with the alignment and I don’t think I’m over reading. Moreover - Eros (or Cupid) was married to Psyche - the Greek personification of the Soul. I can’t decide whether we’re seeing parallels, shadows or doubles in Pierre/Joy and Buffy/Spike but we’re seeing something.

Beauty and the Beast was written by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve. I looked at the original story (got distracted at work!) "The Beast was a prince who lost his father at a young age, and whose mother had to wage war to defend his kingdom. The queen left him in care of an evil fairy, who tried to seduce him when he became an adult; when he refused, she transformed him into a beast." Ring any bells? It was in a collection published in England in 1889 by Andrew Lang - The Blue Fairy story book (I think that MUST be coincidence)

The toad (I need to go back to the toad). It's symbolic. In Fairy Stories, toads undergo metamorphosis and are a catalyst for change. Relating one such story, Bruno Bettelheim (one of the leading writers on Fairy Stories) concludes: “when the hero embraces – that is, loves – the toad, it turns into a beautiful girl (reverse for Buffy/Spike). It is, in the final analysis, love which transforms even ugly things into something beautiful. It is ourselves alone who can turn the primordial, uncouth and most ordinary content of our unconscious…into the most refined products of our mind (110).”

This might seem like I'm reading too much in but I don't think I am. There's a huge over-lap between folk/fairy/myth and contemporary horror.

Chapter 5. They make it to the safety of the woods. However, chapter 6 starts with the woods providing a more hostile environment for her than him. Is it hinting at his feral nature? Yet they’re safe in the woods. They’re safe in the cave – there’s the remains of some feral animal but the animal has gone. Buffy’s idealism/naivety alluded to in her remark there are no wolves in France. True, they were hunted almost to extinction in France in the 1930s but this doesn't preclude an existence known only to others. Evoked by "wolf" is Perrault’s Red Riding Hood). Some of this is note form. I know there are academic essays on fairy stories and BtVS.

The writer decided not touch the topic of the Holocaust
- This was bothering me when I started (it doesn't help that I'm in the middle of a module on representing the Holocaust at the moment). I'll get back to you on this.

One other aspect of We Will Remember Them that I didn't like as much is the aspect at the end that it is the spell that was put on Buffy/Spike to bring them back which is part of what draws them together. Of course time travel is a quagmire for the chicken/egg issues and if they hadn't already been drawn to each other then the relationship wouldn't have existed before she ever went back in history in the first place. But how could she have ever existed if she hadn't saved her father (effectively). And it is at this early point that my brain starts to hurt and I give in. 😀 It is an enjoyable and original fic, even if this makes my brain strain and I don't think their character responses to each other are great for canon or justified within the story well enough at points. 🙂

How ?about "Daylight" by Addie Logan?

Daylight by Addie Logan

It's a post "Not Fade Away" story, which I haven't read, but I've read other things by this author that were quite good.

Ooo, I've enjoyed a few Addie Logan stories and have nearly finished Painted Ribbon (finally!!) so I'll probably join too for this one. 🙂

I'll bow out on this one, I've read the story and have no interest in reading it again. I do agree that Addie Logan is good so I think you'll enjoy the story. It's just not one of those I want to re-read 🙂

I've been so busy I haven't finished this one yet, but I'm happy to read the Addie Logan fic. I may just have to play catch up 🙂

I don`t have a clue, what it is about, but I am in for reading the Addie Logan fic.

I am finally finished with this. Jeez, isn't there too much usage of 'Jeez' here? I can totally see Buffy using this word it is a Buffy word and I am surprised if she had never used it but after a point it got so repetitive that I made a game out of it (I lost I underestimated😛). The early chapters were brilliant and too much of a build up was there for something very interesting happening but everything turned out to be very bland. Why was she there to save Spike when Spike was there to save her? Nothing made sense but then time travel stuff always confuses me like this and the Spike-Buffy connection was not that epic in past I prefer the natural connection much better. I do love the past-connection thing and find it very romantic but nothing really that romantic happened between past them and whatever Buffy felt for past Spike was what she already felt for Present Spike so again no sense-making here. Very disappointed with the ending, this story had so much potential but I will give this much credit that I never gave up on it or wanted to give up or even skimmed it that is an achievement on its own because more than half of the books on my bookshelf are unfinished so it was interesting and intriguing kept me hooked till the end even when it got repetitive and had a promise of good ending that it did not deliver so 6/10. This is a problem with all the longer fics I read except The Writing on the wall. The longer the fic the worse they keep getting. I have read some one-shot fics and I love them all. I am happy with whatever you guys chose for next fic

I have to agree. I've read hundreds of fics and usually the longer they are the worse they get. It often feels like the writers lose control of the story and end up rambling or repeating the same situations. Lots of writers really need brutal editors to cut their stories down

I have to agree too. Several of the best fics I have ever read are one shots. I guess you are at a higher risk to get lost in a twisted plot after a while and you also loose the authentic voicing of the characters, because you change them the more, the longer the story lasts.

And yes, "Yeez" too much 🙂

Longer fan fiction in all fandoms sometimes it's easy to get lost in the plot which is so annoying lol

I didn't even start reading one shots until this year, cause I much prefer the longer ones; they're better written because there's more. They can really delve and dig into each characters story and anything else that happens. Maybe you guys just haven't been reading the right stories 😉

I was enjoying this fic, until I got to chapter 23. Instead of the relationship growing organically from the characters, which it has been, now suddenly they have to sleep together because the spell to get Buffy home requires it. I don't like fics where Spuffy have to have sex for reasons that are so unreal and ridiculous. But I shall continue reading. I'm hoping to finish it tomorrow

That was interesting reasoning by the author ...
Like if u want Spuffy to have sex. Make it real.
