Discussion of 5.14 "Smile Time" (WB-US) - Airing 2/18/04

What can I say about this episode except...HILARIOUS! After this past week....we all needed a good laugh.

That whole thing with Angel removing his nose was just priceless.
And then there's Fred and Wes.....FINALLY! I was about to launch a "KILL KNOX....BRUTALLY!" campaign if those two didn't get together.

The Smile Time puppets have got to be some of the strangest puppets ever shown (the most BIZARRE being the puppets from Peter Jackson's movie MEET THE FEEBLES).
Truly funny and creepy.

My lady, who saw the episode with me last night, and is an on again, off again Buffy and Angel watcher.....was so enamored of the puppets that she wants to OWN them now....lol....(not the evil ones, just the two Angel puppets).
She loves collecting stuff like that, and it took me a while to convince her that they don't SELL these puppets.....lol.......

Yet another marvelous effort by Mutant Enemy.

Grrr, I haven't got to see it yet.

xtrustno1x, I agree.
Jenny and Giles finally got back together, and Jenny get her neck snapped.
Buffy and Angel are back together(for like one minute) and she has to plunge a sword through his chest.
Cordy and Doyle get close to hooking up and he dies.
Tara and Willow(~tear~can't even talk about it~tear~)
Anya and Xander finally make it work and she gets disected.
Cordeilia (supposedly) comes out of her coma all non-demony, and Angel doesn't get his chance with her because her brains got blew out by the vision that saved him.
Grrr...
It's the Whedon curse...

That was fun. Favorite moment: The KISS ::kiss:: ! Love Fred & Wes as a potential couple. They're so well suited to one another. I never really understood the Fred & Charles attraction. Knox can so go away, but I have a bad feeling he's coming back evil. Anyway - so many times on TV you watch people not say anything or say the wrong thing and screw everything up and you're sitting on the couch going "Just tell him, you idiot!" So it was such a relief that she actually Did.

Puppet Angel: "I'm made of felt and my nose comes off."
And the vamp puppet was hilarious. Did anyone else see a resemblance to Guy Smiley from Sesame Street? The slo-mo w/sword scene rocked (my husband thought it was a take off on 'Braveheart'). It didn't make any sense to me that he needed a few days to de-puppet. I would have thought he'd regain his true form when they destroyed the Nest Egg.

Neutral on the Nangel. With the series ending I don't think they have time to develop that one.

Not neutral on the 'Gunn sells his soul'. Bad Gunn, bad!

LOL

I can't get over Horatio Hornblower!

Funniest Angel episode of alltime. Hands down.

DAVID FURY

I was so excited when I saw David Fury as the puppet guy... I almost peed!

I thought that was the funniest thing ever, despite it's slapstick humor in some places, I still loved it. It's a new guilty pleasure.

I'm just hoping that the Whedon curse doesn't touch Fred and Wes. I'm trying so hard right now not to look at spoilers for the next episode. I'd rather not know and continue the rest of the week thinking that everything will be peachy...

Awesome! I loved this episode with an almighty passion! 10/10, I mean really. 🙂

First of all ... FRESLEY! It's about time those two got together. The suspense was killing me. As long as Knox doesn't have a shot, I'm good. Those two are so awesome together.

As for Nina and Angel ... meh. I'll have to think about it. I'm still on the fence. Although I think they made a better couple when he was a puppet. I'm only sayin'. 😉

And the whole puppet storyline was priceless. I absolutely loved it. The purple guy, the soul-sucking of the kids, that self-esteem song at the end. All around awesome episode.

And by the way, Amy said that she's sticking around till the end of the season. I highly doubt she's getting killed off next week. 😀

I'm going to hold you to that! 😛

Hmm....now there's an interesting visual.
I wonder if the gypsy curse would still be in effect while he is in puppet form....?

What an episode THAT would make.....Nina and Angel bedding down and unleashing PUPPET ANGELUS.......lol......oh man....... 😛

It was hilarious on the whole.

I'm growing to like this Nina girl. But the fact that Wes tried to change the curse, proposterous.

Wes and Fred finally got together! Finally, but how long will it take before the Whedon-curse will strike? I don't know, but I'm enjoying this as long as it lasts.

I'm new here and I can see that everybodyelse seems to have loved Smile Time....so I guess I'll start by making myself unpopular by saying that I loved the idea about these evil puppets from hell, but I really didn't think that part of the plotline was that well. :-/

About the fred and wes thing, I was waiting for it - Fred so had a glance at Wess a couple of episodes back - 5x12, where it was sooo obvious that she liked him, and it was also mentioned in Harms way. So that It finally happened wuhuuu! More of that!!!

Another thing I liked about this episode was the thing hinted in last episode with Gunn loosing his "upgrade". I hope we get more about that - did he just turn semi evil again - like the time he sold his soul?!!!?!

I thought this episode was going to be stupid, but it wasn't. It was the funniest episode of the year. The storyline was cool and Angelpuppet was great.
-You know whatever Gunn did for that guy's gonna come back and bite him in the a*s
-David Fury as Gregor Framkin!
-Fred and Wesley, finally
-Spike was underused, but how funny is it that Angel can't beat him to a cup, but when it's friendly fighting with a puppet, Spike loses?
-Kudos to Ben Edlund's direction and also to Joss for the story.

Remember "The Puppet Show" from Buffy? It was no surprise to me that this ep was hysterically funny, and that it also advanced all those story threads--Gunn and his upgrade, Fred and Wesley, Angel and Nina. I was enjoying myself all the way up to next week's preview. That bit kinda scared me--I like Fred and now that Wesley knows how she feels something bad's gotta happen. Scared now.

this was a funny episode. i missed pupet angel beat up spike though. mike said it was funny.

They way they tell it,
Fred will still be around, she just won't be "feeling like herself"....😉

There was also some great lines, like Gunn's about the last few seasons of "Happy Days". And the dog puppet wanting to sing about the difference between Metaphors and analagies (Guessing that was a Joss line). Again, could've been very bad, ending up being very good. They could've done more with Lorne in this episode though, you'd think he would be more involved with an episode that was about a TV show because he is W&H's entertainment guy.

My whole house was filled with extreme laughter during this episode. Absolutely one of the funniest episodes I have seen. The fight scene between puppet Angel and Spike was hilarious!!!!! Too bad they didnt utilize Spike a little more in this ep, his coy remarks would have made it funnier, but it was still great. Poor Wes..... here he is telling Angel that he isnt seeing the signs of a woman interested in him while all along Fred is sending him the same signals. That kiss between Wes and Fred was great. "Smile Time" Rocked!!!!!

I'm sorry, but I couldn't stand this ep. I can't stand this season. And I can't stand that there will be no Buffy in this season. I want Dana to die, and Fred and Wes get together, and then for what's going to happen in the next ep. uggh. this season sucks, but I still watch it religiously. Finally that Joss will write and direct one... please god let it be good.

from the previews i thought i was really going to hate this episode, but i actually think it was one of the better ones this season. It was just really good! Angel and that werewolf..i forgot her name...they were cute. Angel sounded cute when he wasn't sure if she liked him or not. I'm glad that they went out for breakfast or whatever they did at the end...

Wes and Fred, yay! I'm so happy that they finally kissed, Wesley was soo clueless that Fred liked him, and he was talking about Angel not seeing the signs! wow

Did anyone else think that those smiling knocked out kids was the creepiest thing you have ever seen? omg, it scared me so much!!

Next week looks so good!
