Discussion of 8.05 "The Chain" Release 07/25/07

Yeah, a bit too old looking if that was Rona. The Mack truck incident confused a bit too. At first, my gut said "assassination attempt". But...it was just a dramatic device to show off the new slayer/freak, yes? I assume the latter, cos nothing really came of it.

I think there is more than one african-american character in the issue, in fact I think there are three or possibly two, the one that says 'There is no truth' the one that trains with them and the one that gives pseudo-Buffy the talk, it might be that one of them takes two roles in the story but not too sure, I'm positive that the 3rd one (the one who talks) is NOT Rona, way older and SMART rona wasn't smart. One of the other two (or other ONE depends) could be Rona specially the 1st one ('There is no truth') hope you all got what Im trying to say cause its kinda confusing!

EDIT I've just looked at the issue again and I'm POSITIVE they all wear the same clothes and have the same hair, so I'm probably WRONG about the three characters, although I am QUITE sure it's not Rona!! Rona was fat! (no offense)

This is from wikipedia: The sequence depicting the "chain" in which Slayers are called features cameos for the First Slayer, the Righteous Slayer, Nayee Neizghani the Navajo Slayer, Nikki Wood, Elizabeth "Edward" Weston, Anni Sonnenblume and the Chinese Slayer. These Slayers previously appeared in the comic book Tales of the Slayers and in the episode "Fool for Love". Also featured among demons in Slayer memories on this page is the Master.

So two of the black characters would have to be Nikki and the First Slayer but also Rona is in this issue as well. I don't have the issue yet so I can't point out where, but this is from wiki

I just finished reading the issue and it worked really well for me. I haven't read comics since high school until now (with Buffy Season 8) and this one really upped my somewhat skeptical appreciation of them.

My only complaint is that given how short and infrequent these comics are it almost seems like a waste to dedicate a whole issue to a completely symbolic character, even though I enjoyed the story very much...

i didn't enjoy it when I first read it (compared to the first 4). I haven't picked up again yet, but people seem to be enjoying it the second time around.

I dunno, sad, that's all I can say. But it wasn't bad at all. I don't think this should have been the issue to have 3 covers if you ask me. But still a good issue. I still feel sad, cheer me up! Lol.

To me, it's bittersweet. Ultimately she's true to herself and embraces what she is...yet in so doing she commits to something larger than herself. That's like the buffyverse in a nutshell.

I wasn't that into it on first reading either.. mostly because I expected some kind of scooby interaction (besides Giles and Andrew and Vi on tv).
But the story has stuck in my head a lot since reading it, and I think it's a brilliant short story... emphasis on the short 😛 Love the chain imagery with the scythe.
Seemed more like a spin-off comic, rather then an episode of Buffy.
Anyone else think it was cool that everyone in the underworld is scared of Buffy? Her name has such power, it's awesome, and more so Joss translated that really well.. gives her character a lot of respect in this verse also.
I was kind of hoping that she's not really dead 🙁 To me the opening of 'Buffy Summers... is dead!' was cooler then the ending.

I still would like to see more emphasis on the Scobbies. I mean this is called Buffy the Vampire Slayer and sure it's fine to focus on some other slayers cause that's the universe we're in but I'd like to see more stories focused on Buffy, Willow, Xander, Giles, Faith, and Andrew all together and not in separate issues. I mean you don't see Spiderman comics branching off to show the Fantastic Four. I mean it's all the same universe and they're all in the same city. I mean I can't wait until the Faith issue coming up cause I personally love Faith, but again I want to see the entire gang together. I mean ever since Season Seven really got going we never really had stories that just focused on the gang. It was Buffy and the slayers. One thing I can say about Angel is Team Angel was always involved and never really strayed from the storyline no matter who they brought into the show. With Buffy it's like they don't really know what to do with Dawn so they decide to make her a giant, they didn't really know what to do with Xander in Season Seven and probably dont' know what to do with him in Season Eight. Willow hardly got any play in Season Seven and she got some this season, and then Giles hardly got any play in Seasons Six, Seven, and now Eight. I just wanna see everybody together again.

I agree with you up until the writers not knowing what to do with the characters. It seems very ordered to me, but I would also like the show (or comic) to be centred around the scoobies.. and their interaction with eachother.. I'm also going to be worried if we see nothing of Buffy/Xander/Willow in the Faith comics, got to have them connected somehow.
Even when you had a Xander centric episode, or Willow centric etc, you still had the other characters relating to their situations. Seems like they are more isolated by the size of their task now, with slayers everywhere.

DAMN, I took a second read last night and jee. What an amazing issue. The story was brilliant.
I don't think it was Rona either. I thought Olivia. Too old to be a new slayer no? I always thought slayers were young. Oh well, who knows. Maybe someone (joss) will let us in on it soon.

I think the reason some people have been pegging Rona as that girl has been quotes like this one from Georges Jeanty.

QUESTION: Will any of the Scythe-Activated Slayers from the TV show appear in the comic (i.e. Kennedy, Vi, Rona) or are they all new characters?

I haven't drawn any of the TV slayers yet but I do think they make appearances here and there. This whole thing is still being written and I think Joss has made the pool big enough so that at some point whoever's writing a story will come across old friends as well as new.

Here's the girl in question in # 5.

Here's Indigo, the girl who plays Rona. My opinion. The resemblance isn't very good if they're supposed to be the same character.

Now on this one...

Here's the pic they're talking about with all the slayers from Tales of the Slayers.

It's not a good drawing of her but I mean I think it might be Rona because I mean look at the similarities they're both black, they both have dreads, they're both slayers and since I doubt Joss is going to give us an elderly slayer it more than likely is Rona. And as far as Olivia I doubt she'll be brought into the picture, I mean we haven't seen her since like Season Four so I don't know

I loved that! It both makes me very happy and very sad though, happy because yea it's so cool that her name strikes fear like that, sad because it feels like the person Buffy Summers, the one she fought so hard to be especially in the first few seasons, is more or less gone.
Mm, that was a cool opening.

I still would like to see more emphasis on the Scobbies. [...]I mean ever since Season Seven really got going we never really had stories that just focused on the gang. [...]I just wanna see everybody together again.
I really doubt it that we will see them together like they used to be. Ever since like season 3 they have slowly been drifting apart, and in season 7 it was pretty obvious that they weren't the same gang anymore. Hm, and it seems to be quite a busy life for all of them right now.

thanks hun, altho not sure if I agree about Buffy's character or not
I assumed the last slayer in the chain pic was the French slayer from Tales of the Slayers. Not that it matters.

Season 8 - Comic #5

Did anyone get the 5th book yet? Boy, I had to read that thing twice! I had no clue what was going on. Anyway, after the first read I realized what the heck Joss was doing, which made the second read much better.

#5 is not my favorite one so far, but once I figured out what was going on, it was ok.

I give it a 7 out of 10.

What do you think?

Hope you get it now. Once you get used to reading comics, you should get the hang of comic narrative much better. :)
yeah, i had to read it twice too...i think everyone does, just to get the hang of the flash backs, and the first person narrative.

i felt sorry for Faux-Buffy. she was forced into this, both becoming a Slayer and becoming Buffy. she seems really lonely and lost.

i loved the fact that we never found out her real name. but like she says, we didn't know her, but SHE knows who she is and that's what matters.

trhe opening pages 'Buffy Summers...Is DEAD!' thought that was awesome. i really liked how is flew back and forwards, showing how she got the Calling and how she ended up as Buffy.

i really hope she isn't dead, and if she is, i hope she knew that the other Slayers arrived to help her.

this issue took a little time to get my head round, but i thought it was a good read. 7/10.

BTW, was that Satsu we can see dropping from the roof?

Andrew

does anyone else think that andrew is the most hilarious character or what?

eventhough his spot on that tv commercial was short, it was funny.
