Discussion of 8.05 "The Chain" Release 07/25/07

Now see, that commercial would never fly on regular tv, lol. That's why it's in a comic of course. But could you imagine if that was really a commercial? I mean on real tv? People would be all over that, like wt....? Lol. Andrew is pure genious but I still think Anya was funnier, but now that she's gone. I am glad we have Andrew to crack us up. Hope we see lots more of him.

it should be on tv! lol
I'm glad Joss is...I dunno, sticking to his guns and keeping his narratives complex, like an actual ep of a TV show. But it does show the limitations of comics. There aren't as many contextual cues to pick up on...sound, music. He's totally dependent on his artists to make likenesses and context clear. Either that, or he has to make the narration more explicit I guess.

But it's fun, the way you have to study them.

Those old comics from the 60s, 70s...there's so much narration, and characters literally explaining what they're doing, as they do it. Clearer, but cornier.

i have no idea.. this issue was a blur to me but it makes a lil sense now.. when they do a flashback or something like tha,, they should MENTION IT!!!! like a lil star on the top corner of the strip that tells yo uthis is a flash back

good point. stars or stakes, take your pick.
i agree. a little star (or in this case, a stake) would let us know of flashbacks. i dont mind them as long as i realize whats going on at some point!

Nah, that's be terrible. Like in fanfic when the author not only separates a flashbacks, but also feels the need to label it as such. In all caps.

One of the things that hooked me into comics when I first started reading them is how little they actually give you. They give you the images and some words, and you've gotta fill in the rest yourself. Figuring out what the hell is going on is half the fun of reading comics, and I still get tripped up to this day, be it panel progression or identifying a character (I think it's Rona, myself, but at first I was all, "the primitive got less terrifying, more philosophical"). It took me two readings to completely get #5 too, but I find the challenge a virtue not a limitation.

I didn't like it that much the first time. I like knowing about the other "Buffy" I am gonna read it again, since some like it a second time. I had a hard time following as well. I am also engrossed in Season Four of Angel (I may be slightly distracted)). Maybe I will read it again tonight and see what happens. Nice art. 🙂 Like the cover.

#5 was freakin' awesome. And the ending to #4..wow. (no spoilers)

Man it feels like i'm back on my comfy chair watching new episodes of Buffy each week. Don't get me wrong, I loved 1-4, but 5 really stands out to me. Joss is doing such a fantastic job with these. 24 pages isn't long enough! i'm going insane i need number 6! lol

welcome to BB rep
Yeah it's almost as good as watching the tv show. I still need no interruptions while I'm reading it 😛
Personally I enjoyed 4 more then 5, mostly because I'm interested in what's going on with the scoobies. 5 is good to see another point of the buffyverse, but I actually want to see the real Buffy in Buffy 😛

Right there with ya Optinal. I love #5, and now im desperately waiting for number six, but i also have to agree kanga, i like to see the scoobys a little more
But still #5 was really good

I've merged the thread you made Optional with the offical discussion thread for #5 (This thread) as it was just another thread to discuss the new issue.

I finally dug up the quote that claimed outright Vi and Rona would make an appearance in Issue # 5. It's from a list of old spoilers originally offered up from Wizard universe.

NEW BUDS, NEW BADDIES
The Scooby Gang gets amped up with an army of Slayers at Buffy’s beck and call as familiar faces like Rona and Violet (from “Buffy” Season 7 who show up in issue #5 in August)
