^Just a note, Angel Aftermath was a miniseries that has ceased production. This is Angel: Boys and their Toys #27 😉 .
Personally, I thought this little two-issue story was excellent. To me, it felt like an above average Buffyverse TV episode. I've read all of the canon comics, loved 90% of them, but Boys and their Toys is the first comic story that felt like it would transfer into a standard TV episode seamlessly.
The story heavily borrows from the Buffy Season 2 Halloween episode, Angel even makes a reference to that effect. This is certainly no ambiguous/dubious installment that "could take place anytime," this references many past events including and especially After the Fall.
There are great character moments, and this is really a great follow-up to Destiny. Destiny explored the dynamic between Spike and Angelus as bad guys, finally seeing them competing for the title of champion which neither really wanted for the right reasons.
We now see the two vampires with souls accepting each other as champions ready to carve out a new mission possibly together. This weighty issue, giving Spike huge amounts of character progression is given levity by the absurd supernatural event that Angel, Spike, Groo & Jeremy are trying to stop. Thematically, think BS2 &3 and AS5.
Also of note was that this was probably the first piece of Buffyverse media that I've ever seen without a female character.
Throw away lines like "Spangel... never going to happen!" Make it all the better.
