Disney buys Star Wars for 4.05 Billion

I just saw this on yahoo news. Crazy. It's the same feeling I got when I heard that Disney had purchased Marvel Comics.

I was a little apprehensive when the Marvel deal was completed, just because Marvel is something I care about and you aren't always sure where the chips are going to fall when deals like this come together. However, Marvel, both in comics and on the big screen, has been nothing short of brilliant ever since they were bought out by Disney, so I'm confident Star Wars is in good hands. By this point I think that Disney has proven that they know what they have and how to handle and asset.

One thing I think is cool is the announcement that Disney is planning on releasing new Star Wars related content every two or three years. I'm not Star Wars-crazy like some people, but I like it a lot, so this should be really neat.
 
I never liked Star Wars, so I looking forward to Princess Leia become an official Disney Princess, and Star Wars 7 revealing Mickey Mouse takes over for Darth Vader!

I really hope that this brings phenomenal success to Disney and all of its properties. I hope that they make more money than Obama can waste in his entire term. I hope that they create new characters, new series, and become the leaders in every aspect of the entertainment industry.

Did I mention that I own Disney stock?

I hope the new movies will be focusing on after the original trilogy' timeline. 😛
 
I am devastated... Even more so that I know I won't be able to resist going to see the new movie(s)...
 
I just read it as well. And seriously, I think those new movies are going to be crap. The way I see it, it's all about the money. No matter how they screw up those movies, they're still gonna make millions and millions of dollars, because everybody is going to to watch the movies. No, thanks. To me, the series starts with Episode IV and ends with Episode VI.
 
As I recall, George Lucas originally planned on this being a series of 3 trilogies, but eventually decided that the final movies would be just too big a task to undertake. Hopefully, he will be able to consult with Disney Studios and at least give them guidelines as to how he planned to do them.

Just a personal observation here, it seems somewhat ironic to me that Disney would lose so much money on "John Carter," and then spend more than thirty times as much as they lost to buy a franchise that was, itself, by George Lucas' own admission, largely inspired by and patterned after Edgar Rice Burroughs'"A Princess Of Mars" in general, and the John Carter character in particular.
 
I'm not sure why people are so apprehensive. I mean, Disney has a track record beyond Mickey Mouse and cartoon characters. Look at the Marvel movies. Disney bought Marvel studios and has hit a grand slam with almost every film ever since. The Avengers, Thor, Captain America? All Disney.

And also, of note on other Disney projects, they own a number of subsidiary companies that make programming not normally associated with the Disney brand. Most people don't know, but Disney produced the T.V. show LOST.

I totally agree. Disney goes way way beyond the cartoons we typically associate them with; plus we just saw that they are capable of creating a blockbuster for an adult audience with The Avengers.

Also, Lucasfilm is much larger than just the Star Wars franchise, no doubt Disney is gaining a lot from acquiring their special effects division.

I can see people being because apprehensive about another Star Wars being made because the feel the story has already been explored enough; but doubting it just because it's Disney seems silly, especially when Lucas has already said he would serve as a creative consultant on upcoming the films.

I agree, I've never been a fan of Star Wars, so hoping that I may like the new ones with new people behind them.
 
I think it's far too early to judge the outcome of this. I mean, a new Star Wars movie to me is good news, and there are a lot of great films owned by Disney that have been produced by a different production company (Pixar for example), so I have my complete faith in the continuation of the franchise 😀

I am not shocked that this has happened. Ever since I heard about the Star Wars attractions in Disney World, I thought "I bet Disney will either buy the franchise out, or at least become a partner."
 
Okay so does Disney just own everything now? Let's see off the top of my head they own their in-house studios, Pixar, ABC, Marvel, Lucasfilms.

As a Star Wars fan I'm cautiously optimistic. Lately Star Wars has burnt me pretty bad, though. (I'm looking at you Star Wars: Old Republic. Damn EA to the hellmouth.)
 
I kind of think they should leave Star Wars alone really. It's been done and it was good, though admittedly it trailed off in the last couple of films. If they mix it up a bit then I may change my mind, but it just feels a bit like beating a dead horse.

Of course I say all this but I'm obviously going to watch the films when they come out. I'm fickle like that.
