All these vs threads I've been reading since I joined have made me very curious. (This is not a vs thread, btw, no worries 🙂)

Do you know why you ship the pairing you ship? Is there a part of your past or personality or something that you can look at and go 'oh, that might explain it'?

I've heard people say that they dislike Spuffy because they went through an abusive relationship in their past, or that they like Spuffy because it feels more mature and real, perhaps based on their own experiences with romance. At the same time, people have said they ship Bangel and they turn out to be married to their high school sweetheart, and so on.

Not everyone can point at something like that and go 'that's part of it' but those of you who can, and are willing to share, what is it?

Ooooooh! This could be interesting.

My reasons for liking Spuffy are fairly obvious to me. I have and still suffer from depression and Spike's advice for dealing with that is quite good. Of my own relationships, the one I look back upon the most was intense and secret. The person I was with was a poetry reader, like me. My friends are either blind, stupid or maybe they did not care. And Spike likes the Sex Pistols.

My reasons for liking Willow is not quite as clear. Willow is my favourite character, she is the one I identify with the most, and Tara is her one true love. Tillow feels different from any relationship I have been in. I usually maintain a certain distance. I don't feel comfortable letting anyone be too involved in my daily doings. Maybe Tillow is my fantasy of the relationship I wish I could have? Guess I better start looking for my own Tara.

Great answer!
I dislike Spuffy because I dislike the the sexist love of a good women trope. Spike was a stalker who felt entitled to Buffy, Angelus never played it like "Be with me or I will kill myself! or you!" respect. No emotional blackmail, no f*king with her head like I'm still in love you way, let me attempt to rape you and blame you.

After s7 meta analysis I truly believe they were going for something deeper then the "the love of a good women trope"
so I am better with it, but still that unfortunately is not how it reads to too many people, thirteen years after the fact.

I really don't like 'vs threads', at least not when it comes to ships (I do understand this isn't one of those🙂). It usually just ends up being each side baiting the other and even the most respectful argument goes round and round in circles eventually. I prefer discussing the pros and cons of individual ships separately. The 'which is better' threads end up in stasis.

So what if I am?! Just kidding, he was my college sweetheart. That's totally different. 😉

I actually don't think that my own relationship has much to do with my shipping, though – it's more about my affection and admiration for the characters and my interest in getting lost in their world sometimes. I think it's more an escape from my real life than a reflection of it. However, I do take the point that I might be less likely than other people to assume that characters who start a relationship while they're young must necessarily grow apart as they age instead of growing together.

Didn't we just have a thread like this? Or am I just mixing up my threads... LOL. They are all sorda melting in my brain.

I think you mean the thread about how we ship. Mostly I'm curious as to what part of a person's life or past is connected to their way of shipping.

I'm now thinking that I should've (or could've) put it in The Bronze, since I mean any ship, not just in the Buffyverse.

I'm smelling what your steppin' in. I shall ponder and return with an insightful response. Well as insightful as I get anyway haha.

Within the context of shipping Bangel. The reason I ship them has less to do with me and more to do with the story and the characters. The story and characters feel to me to be larger than life. So I don't believe that for example I feel I ever say to myself, I would love to date a guy like Angel. Angel doesn't exist. Neither does Buffy or Spike. I can't really translate those characters to real life because they exist in this fantasy story world that is very different from my own, if that make sense? So when people make the arguments that Buffy and Angel's relationship is less real than for example her and Spike's relationship I find it kind of funny because really they are all pretty unreal. She is a Slayer, in a supernatural world filled with Vampires and Demons. She faces apocalypses constantly. None of it is real. Not even Riley was "real" he was in a secret Demon fighting government organization. This is different for example from, Friends or even Sex and the City, two other shows in which I have strong Ship feelings for Ross/Rachel & Carrie/Big. So that is the context with which I view Buffy - Fantasy. And in the context of Fantasy I love the idea of this greater love, soulmates, etc, something that I wouldn't be as comfortable with in shows like Friends or Sex and the City - because its more real life stuff.

When I first started watching BTVS I was in high school. So the first time I really became invested in the Buffy/Angel relationship I was less mature about the whole thing. I remember falling in love with my first love and how it felt and those incredibly strong feelings resonated with me. I remember going back and having drinks many many years later with my so called "first love" and it was horrible. He was a total douche. I couldn't believe I had been in love with him as a kid. But as I grew up and kept watching the show it became evident that the reasons I continued to be invested in the b/a relationship were less about my personal relationship experiences, because he was no Angel and I am no Buffy. And by that I mean, I think Angel is an amazing character, an incredible hero and he continues to be amazing as he grows as a character. And also, I, unlike Buffy was not dealing with real life adult situations as a kid. I was not dying, saving the world, killing my boyfriend, fighting evil on a nightly basis. Buffy was not me as a teenager. And as an adult, I get that now. Buffy had incredible burdens, and for the most part she carried those burdens on her own but for short periods of time she was able to unload those burdens onto Angel. She was able to be vulnerable with him in ways she wasn't able to be with others and this extends beyond Seasons 1-3 and into Forever and Chosen. I may not be a vampire slayer, but we all know what it feels like to have the weight of the world on your shoulders and what I do find especially relatable is finding that other person that can understand that burden, you can share that burden with as a true partner.

I do share alot of Buffy's characteristics. I can be a bit neurotic and insecure. I lash out at those I love when I'm hurt. I've said this before, I also went through a period of depression in my early 20s and I had a very similar relationship to the one she had with Spike. And it wasn't all bad, I really did appreciate the Spuffy arc in Season 6 when I got older and basically was like "oh yeah...I've been there." And I even think that the things I went through helped me grow as a person. I can't tell you how much I sympathize with Buffy in Season 6 so much so that its uncomfortable and I don't like to watch. Mainly I don't like the idea that my hero is torn down so much and never built back up but that is a story for another day. So when Buffy went over to Spike in Season 6 and said, "I can't do this" I admired her for making the best decision for herself (something I personally didn't do which would have saved me so much grief). My favorite Spuffy moment (yes its incredible but I do have one!) is in Hells Bells. Buffy looks content with her decision to end things with Spike but it does hurt her to see Spike with another woman. She knows its the right thing to do, to get out of this relationship but she acknowledges that she has feelings for this guy. A weaker person would have fallen back into old habits and continued on with the relationship even when the relationship makes you unhappy. Because I think that even if you are a Vampire Slayer and facing death on a daily basis, you should still try and be with someone that makes you happy.

Very well put, thanks for your perspective :)
I'am always annoyed when people say : Bangel/Spuffy is a real relationship, more connected to reality ! I disagree because none of those relationship are real to me. Of course there are metaphors which let us to identify ourselves to the characters, to the situation, but that's all !

This is a fun idea for a thread!

I ship Bangel and Fuffy for different reasons but it helps in both ships that I absolutely adore both characters, the dynamic and the chemistry that they have.

Bangel for me is all about the story and what it means to both characters. They are forever changed by each other. I love that they found understanding in the other when they felt alone in the world. I love that they both make the other feel more human. I love that their love is grander than anything else but that they don't let it define themselves as characters (they are both heroes before being an epic ship!). Their relationship is transcendent but also the acknowledgement that love isn't everything. I don't know, I just love what that relationship does to both characters and their overall story left me with a very positive feeling. Since I care a lot about endings, that's a key point for me. I look back on it with satisfaction.

Fuffy is all about potential and missed opportunities in a way. There's tons of tension between them and not that many scenes that it definitely is the ship that makes me crave for more! I love that it took them this long to finally understand each other. It really felt like a journey to me. And while I would have loved more scenes between the 2, just like Bangel, I'm incredibly satisfied with the ending they got. It's beautiful and one of the reasons I can't totally hate s7. Also, despite not wanting to (and trying to hide it), they deeply care about each other and it makes my heart ache?
