Willow goes from kind of sort of interested in xander to Oz, to Tara.

Xander goes from VAGUE interest in buffy and Willow to Pursuing cordellia, to Anya, now im not sure where.

ALL of these romances COLLAPSE into nothingness.

Well, half of the show was in High School and the other half everyone was in their early twenties. It's not too far-fetched. Throw in dating vampires and demons and it becomes really complicated. If the show were to continue I bet there would have been a few long-term, positive relationships, probably none that have started yet..

Solid, long-lasting relationships rarely occur in fiction, not unless the couple is older or not within the main or immediately supporting characters. There is just no drama or controversy or excitement to be taken from happily married couples with no problems or issues.

Writers want the drama, they want to cause fireworks and keep their viewers guessing and coming back for more. They want their viewers not to get bored with seeing the same old thing week in, week out.

Riley goes from Buffy to Sam and they seem to be prefect together. Of course, they are always in danger and there is little probability that they will both retire and live in the old black ops home.

Willow and Kennedy seem to be a match made on the hellmouth, but it could last.

At the age they are at I dont think it is unusual. I have met many couples at that age who think they are going to be together forever one month and broken up/hating each other the next... Its rare to find your one true love on the first go.

Side note, I dont think Willow and Kennedy would last, but Im basing that on season 7, not on the comics as I havent read them all. I just think Kennedy was too immature and erratic for Willow to have a lasting relationship with.

The answer is actually very simple: No. Joss Whedon said that the only couple in the Whedonverse who would have never broken up are Zoe and Wash from Firefly/Serenity.

I do believe that had Tara not died, her and Willow would have stayed together. Or at least ended together. It was said a few times that Tara was her true love. Now that's only my opinion, some may disagree.

Like someone said, Sam and Riley, from that one episode we saw, were a definite match.

Basicly, no, no one stayed with someone until the end, and I'm glad, I mean they are 16-22yo, wouldn't be very interesting nor realistic if they stayed in one relationship.

It doesn't last in the comics. I won't say why, since it would spoil a lot, but their relationship doesn't last, which isn't as big of a spoiler as it seems (plus, most people are happy to know that).

And yeah, romances that last have a tendency to be boring, though I think that there has to be a way to make them interesting - it's all about conflict, and there are more types of conflict than just romantic, but it does tend to be easier to stick to that.

On a related note, something that I liked about the show is that they never felt the need to make the relationships permanent or resolved and left things open ended instead. Things don't need to all be wrapped up in a bow, and so they didn't.

In the Buffyverse, no. In the Whedonverse possibly. Simon and Kaylee are shown hooking up at the end of Serenity, so it's possible that relationship may last. On Dollhouse
