A lot of the things in this thread certainly didn't originate with Buffy. I love the writers' use of language, but I think the kind of magpie-approach of shoving little phrases from every which where is really endemic of our whole generation. Buffy and her friends spoke a vivid language that was always more similar to how my friends and I actually did talk back then than it was to the stilted dialogue of most TV shows.

But one thing that I'd never heard before Buffy that I've tended to take into my own language (nobody recognises it) is something they do chronically on the show of leaving the preposition "with" dangling at the end of a sentence. "Do you want to come with?" is a classic example.

It creeps in despite my not letting it. For instance lately when someone asks me how I am doing I will answer: Still Alive And Kicking. If I am in a hurry I say I gotta book. I said Nah instead of No the other day and the person looked at me strange. lol 🙂

two weeks ago I said "Thank you, I feel much more abstract now" - to a teacher who gave the weeeirdest answer to a question (that I didn't ask btw but he seemed to think so. His answer was so far from the question though that I couldn't resist that line)

exactly...it's one of the things i think that help make the show so popular.

I LOVE the slang in Buffy! It was one of the things that turned me on to the show... mainly because I heard people speaking the way I already spoke. Not many people had ever spoken like me before, so when I heard these really cool peeps adding -y's and -age's onto their words... I WAS HOOKED!!!! 🙂

I talk french in my everyday life but I love to play with the langage like they do in Buffy! The more I watch it, the more I tend to make stupid puns, to use a name as a verb or to transform names in adjectiv-y!
AND, whenever I draw aimlessly and someone asks me "What's that?", I love to say "It's just a doodle, I do doodle, you too, you do doodle too!"
