"Do you have parents, yeah both of them unlike some people"

It was a nasty comment and she knew how much it'd hurt. There's no excuse for it, but as has been mentioned here by a few people, Buffy and Xander got in some pretty nasty comments over the first three seasons too (Xander especially, quite often he'd say stuff unprovoked). I mean, you could argue that Buffy's "Do you have parents?" line was pretty below the belt to start with, especially since Cordelia's family situation isn't fantastic.
But yeah, it was mean, Cordy knew it and she was fine with that.

Meh, they were in a heated argument. They were both throwing insults around. If anything it just shows Cordy had nothing more to go on in terms of Buffy herself, so she had to resort to that line. That a...far-fetched compliment...right? I can understand Cordys frustration. These popularity contests was all she had in her life at the time (well except Xander), and now someone was trying to take that away from her.

Not only does the comment make sense in context with the character and not as bad as some other stuff she says during the show, but you have to remember also that Buffy is a show that really blurs the lines between comedy and drama. I think sometimes the character themselves such as Xander will use something quite light hearted to just deal with tough everyday things. So while this wasn't the nicest thing to say to Buffy, I think Buffy would have just passed it off as just Cordy being Cordy. Besides at this point Buffy's parents have been separated for awhile so I think she has learnt to deal with it.

The comment was more just stupid when you think about it. I mean, she was still seeing Hank at this point wasn't she?
She still has two parents, the guy's not dead.

I think that Cordy was referring to the fact that Buffy's parents are divorced when she said that.

Yeah I mean if Cordy thought that Hank was dead then surely she would not have made the comment, even for her that would have been too low.

Yeah that's what I mean.
I just mention it because I had a few friends with divorced parents growing up and they always laughed it off when people treated them like one of their parents had died. They were just like "Erm, okay, it is sad... but they do still exist ya know?"
Point being that Buffy does have two parents; arguably better than Cordelia's (at this point anyway) despite both her's living in the same house.

Yeah, it was mean, but that was Cordelia. She was a bully and is known for being hurtful and not caring. Naturally I wasn't a huge fan of Cordelia when she was on Buffy.

I think much of culurity was masking her own issues. Even in S1 I think she is deep down a nicer person than she makes out in front of her friends, she is just a bit inmature and doesn't know how to express it at that point.
