Do You Like 3D?

When I was a kid back in the 50's, 3d was first developed. we had several movies ("House Of Wax" and "Creature From The Black Lagoon" are the only ones that I can recall at the moment, but I'm sure that there were others) and even a few comic books made, but it was apparently an expensive, complicated process, more trouble than it was really worth. I didn't care for it then, and I like it even less now, but apparently it's gotten cost practical now, and as a result is Hollywood's new toy. And I still find myself totally underwhelmed with the process.

So, what's your opinion? Love it? Hate it? Couldn't care less?

Yes and No, i dont wanna watch the same movie over and over in 3-D, once is fine then I'd rather not. It gives me headacheyness.

Sometimes its so not needed, then other times its used as a big selling point. Totally depends on the movie, i do think Animated movies work best though.


And I don't wanna watch 3-D at home, only at the cinema.

I really hope that they don't start doing everything in 3D now. I went to see Alice in 3D and came out feeling sick - and not just because it was a Tim Burton movie.

I didn't feel it added anything to my viewing experience to be honest and could have done without the headache. For me movies are about the performance, yes special effects help it along but it should not be the main feature. Unless as Fake Shemp picked up on that it is an animation movie. Then the acting is much less a feature and you need something else for a focal point.

I can't say either way, I've not experienced it because it doesn't work for me. 3D works on depth perception which I have trouble with. Due to having a squint/lazy eye, I only focus or look at something out of one eye at one time. It's physically impossible for me to use both. Which means 3D just looks crap to me, lol.

From what I've heard though, I'm not missing out on an awful lot.

Even with animated movies you can have great acting, the animators do that themselves when animating, it can be so subtle and so much more powerful and I do feel 3-D for the most part is being used in a gimmicky fashion. But i do enjoy it, for the most part. Except the headaches.

I don't mind it, but then again I've only ever seen two films in 3D (Avatar, Alice in Wonderland).

I really enjoyed the effect in Avatar - I think it enhanced the film and provided a great experience.

Alice, on the other hand - I didn't find it so great. It didn't seem to "fit" and took me out of the film a lot of the time.

I think it is a bit of a gimmick, but I think it's here to stay. Not sure how well 3D in the home will work out, though.

The only 3d I've really seen are ones at places like Disneyland and Universal Studios and such, no real movies. Don't know how different it is, but I know I don't like it at those places, it hurts my eyes after a while. I also don't think I would like it much because I don't really care about special effects at all. I care more about story and acting than how it looks.

Thats too bad Faux, because that is exactly where it is heading.. more and more 3D TV's are being produced and once the gaming community fully is launched into the 3D realm, as the last conference highlighted, you will see more and more 3D at home.

I am surprised that I do not mind it as much as I thought.. that being said I have not seen many films in 3D..

The first 3D movie I viewed was Avatar, and I thought it was amazing. The film was so visually stunning already that I felt 3D enhanced the experience. When I went to see Alice in Wonderland, however, I wasn't quite as impressed. I payed several dollars extra for a movie that had few 3D scenes. I think it's very gimmicky; another attempt of the film industry to make more money. I also apparently come home with a few broken blood vessels in my eyes after watching a movie with the 3D glasses on for awhile.

I know thats where its heading with 3-D capable tvs and 3-D blurays, im just not heading there. (thats why i brought it up, the 3-Ds you can watch at home, i aint impressed with yet)

here here! Felt the same after seeing that.

I really think 3D is vastly overrated and really hope they don't start making everything in 3D now.

I thought the Disney version of "A christmas carol" last year in 3D had some segments in it that were completely useless because they seemed to only be in the movie because it would 'look cool' in 3D

I hate 3D. I think it's a gimmick used as a substitute for good cinematography. It pretty much turns any movie from a work of art into a shallow amusement park ride, since the needs of the 3D trump any creative decisions the director and cinematographer might make regarding the movie's composition and framing. Everything is reduced to "hey, stick something out toward the camera so we can see the 3D!"

I've never seen a movie improved by the addition of 3D. It's just an excuse to jack up ticket prices and replace substance with style.

I don't like 3-D. It gives me a headache and personally it doesn't look/feel any different to me.

Well, when I was younger 3D movies would make me puke. (sw) But nowadays, I think that they're alright, but making a movie 3D always seems to reduce the quality of the film. So, unless it's a VERY short movie that's there for cheap entertainment rather than quality and depth, they should probably pass on the 3D. 🙂

I think their re-releasing of Plan 9 from Outer Space in 3D is a hella idea. I think, judging from some of the responses, the problem is not so much 3D but the direction of films made for 3D. If they were directed as a 'normal' movie I think would be much more acceptable.

Other than the fact that the man is a hack and has ruined pretty much everything he has touched, turned one of my favorite childhood characters into Michael Jackson, no, no problem.

I'm not a big fan, but if movie is made 3D then people should watch it like that. Like, my friend said he watched My Bloody Valentine 3D and that it sucked, and I was in the cinema watching it and yeah, plot was little bad, but effects were good.. I guess some movies just need 3D.

And other than the fact that someone who's never read a comic book has NO BUSINESS being in charge of Batman, and completely ruined it along with everything else he's touched. That man should never be more than an Art Director.

As for 3D, it's a waste of money that could be better spent making more movies and employing all the people out there in the industry who need jobs right now.

I'm not sure that I get what you mean by the 'Michael Jackson' thing. 🙂

I'd guess that you meant Willy Wonka in the 2005 Tim Burton version of the novel "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory"... Seeing as I also thought that Johnny Depp looked like Michael Jackson in that movie, and shared some of his attributes... Which is weird, since I think that Johnny Depp is the hottest thing ever. :biggrin3:

I think that Tim Burton's movies are alright, I liked some of them, even though they all seem to be fairly unusual... Beetlejuice, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Edward Scissorhands come to mind, even though I enjoyed them all. And then he seemed to have some really fantastic ones like James and the Giant Peach. But then again, you two ladies definitely know more about him than I do. 🙂

But that's fairly off-topic. So, about 3D movies... I think that I prefer 4D. 3D seems like a waste of time and space. But 4D is actually kind of cool. 😀
