Joyce wasn't easy to like in the early seasons. She was quite cruel to Buffy in many ways, blaming her for the past, and of course she gave her that terrible ultimatum in S2. But once Joyce knew what was going on, that Buffy was the Slayer, she got better and better. By Season 5 I really liked Joyce, and felt sorry that Buffy and Giles hadn't sat her down and told her the truth earlier, then maybe things would have been different.

I love her haha. Even in the early seasons I thought she was good but just concerned. But your right S3 - on I loved her more.
 
I love Joyce because she brought a warmth with her to Buffy and the show, things didn't feel the same or as safe without her. Even before Buffy died, she was already slowly descending into depression, starting from when she lost her mother.
 
Like most of the characters, she was deeply flawed while still having many good points to her, and yet that helped make her a compelling character to me, and an interesting foil for Buffy who was put into some interesting and even harsh situations to please her mother while also defying her. While I'd never nominate her the "mother of the year" award, I don't think she's anywhere near as horrible as some make her out to be. And it's often overlooked how obnoxious Buffy can be to her at times which Joyce typically shrugs off, and many of Joyce's foibles are based on love and fear for her daughter.
 
Nope. Don't like her at all. I think she is probably one of my least favorite characters.

I could not agree with this more. Joyce was a warm character not only to Buffy but to so many . Faith, Willow, Xander, Spike.

Very true, Joyce did her realistic best with all of those characters.
Joyce was necessary and I loved that she was not perfect! I may be the only one but I do think it was good that she reacted badly to Buffy being a slayer because it was more realistic this way. She loved her daughter and was scared that she was gonna die. Also, she was a single mom which is very hard so I give her a pass on a lot of things!
