Im going over to my dad's in a bit and he just text me saying he's going out but doors open if I get there before he returns.

My mother usually had one door unlocked as well, and if I can't find my keys in the morning I'll just leave my door unlocked until I get home.

Are we a strange family to not lock doors?
 
Yeah, there is lots of opportunistic crime here. I lock the doors even to go to the pub or neighbours, but my neighbours dont! They've gone away and told me to raid the fridge and garden if I want, the side door is open haha. There is neighbourhood watch here, and we have one cop, they are kept busy enough.

My house is not exactly secure tho, even with locking up. Could literally punch through the walls if someone wanted too. I rolled over in bed and put my knee through the wall by accident. Lucky I dont have much of interest to steal!

The oldies in the assisted care home have had things stolen while they were home. One lady had her entire storage unit raided while she watched the footy inside, about 3 metres away. I've been lucky that my hoses havent been nicked. I leave them out in clear sight.

Right now I have every window open and it is lovely! But I wouldn't sleep with them open here.
 
I lock mine, even when I am in, but I know people who don't. To a degree, it is habit; if I shut a door, I lock it.
 
I have my chain on when I'm home and I get freaked out if I realize I forgot - on the other hand, my mom's place is never locked if they're home, until sometime after dinner when they lock it before bedtime. That's normal to me - I lock because I live alone and in an apartment building, but in a house, in surburbia-ish neighborhoods, things are different.

I think it depends on where you live. I would say the more rural/isolated the more you can be lax with your security, in general. Leafy suburbs in small towns are a toss up. Leaving your place open in a city is reckless in the extreme.

I lock my door when I'm out but not when I'm in (except when I'm asleep obvs.) . Locking a door during the day when you're home seems excessive unless your neighborhood is prone to home invasions or something.
 
At home, heck yes.

At the country house, rarely. At night more or less, but otherwise no.

If I (or my brother or aunt) go to my mother's we all just walk straight in. I do the same at my dad's. I couldn't imagine knocking on the door and waiting for them to unlock the door.

I was over my mother's the other day and we were playing a game, and look up and my aunt is walking through the door. I guess that's not normal to most people?

No, I think that's totally normal, but it's almost like there's a difference from a matriarch/patriarch standpoint; it's the same for me. My mom, arguably the 'matriarch' of my family, and everyone just walks in, no one ever knocks. But me, who lives alone and doesn't often get visitors, and never unplanned ones, I can lock up and not worry that I'm locking out loved ones dropping by for a drink.

Maybe we're both weird, but personally I think that's fairly normal for most families.
 
Yes but my dad sometimes leaves the door open. I hate it because it puts my beautiful TV at risk.
 
Absolutely.

Aside from the valuable items in my home, I don’t think I’d be able to function or sleep at all if I left the door unlocked. My mind is too creative for its own good so I’d sit there absolutely mortified imagining someone was hidden in my home.

I have keys to both houses! But an unlocked door is easier!

By that score why have a door at all?
Watcher towers is in a quiet unlit road where someone could wander all around without being seen. Plus we've got too many doors at ground level, so we keep all of them locked at all times unless we are in the garden, even then it's only the doors we are using that are unlocked.

Mrs Watcher is normally WFH in her study during the day, & that overlooks the drive so she can see anyone approaching & so can open the door to anyone coming to visit.
Anyone hopping over the back fence will find nothing but locked doors (and an angry Watcher!) 😀

If you are polite to JWs and speak to them, they specifically target your house afterwards.
I live in the not so great area of town. So you bet yer whatever I double lock my doors whether I'm home or not! 👀
