I have to have my bedroom door open so I can hear if the bunnies need me in the night. They will thump if anything upsets them. Sometimes they are better guard dog than the dogs!

Plus, its part of my defense strategy to run out screaming, unrestricted by doors, at an intruder. My bedhair would scare any skinny methhead off. I would come in like a wreaking ball and send them flying through the wall.

The police in Toronto are encouraging residents to prevent violent encounters with criminals by making it easy to access car keys during home break-ins. Car theft home invasions in Toronto have increased by 300 percent in a single year, and the police can’t keep up.

BlogTO reports at a recent community safety meeting, Constable Marco Ricciardi said, “To prevent the possibility of being attacked in your home, leave your fobs at your front door, because they’re breaking into your home to steal your car. They don’t want anything else.”

So maybe you should just have them on a dish with a sign like leaving cookies for Santa. "Dear home invaders, here are my car keys. Remember, drive responsibly."
Screw that. I'll home alone the damn place before I set my cars keys out to make it easier for them to steal.

Judging by the poll results where 23 do lock their doors and zero people don't lock them, then I would say yes 😉

I leave my back / side door open when I am in the house while it is still light outside so friends / family do tend to let themselves in, but I am amazed anyone would leave their door open when no-one is in the house !

I'm so lucky that I live in the Midwest where your right to protect yourself hasn't been taken away by some screwball, power hungry politician. Anyone breaks into my home they'll promptly be greeted with a .45 in their face. Oh, and yes, we lock our doors.

My best friend and ex is private security, he heads private security so my house is pretty much like Fort Knox, better than. My pup has free reign so if he barks I'm on it. I also target practice frequently.

We have ALL the gun laws, and someone still got shot at for knocking on the wrong door on the street I am visiting tonight 😱 hopefully I get the right house lol.

I am so good at locking my own door, that I frequently lock myself out. Always seems to be when I need the loo too.

Wow that's actually insane. No matter how bad I thought California was on crime these past few years...this easily takes the cake. No wonder Trudeau stepped down.

Oh big change! Moving sucks too. Hope you settle in ok. Definitely make sure you lock the door!
But in saying that, I was so medicated when I lived there that I often left my keys in the front door and the car open. The trick is not to have anything worth stealing 😉

honestly, when i'm in the caribbean where crime is much worse, i tend to sit all day with doors open b/c it's hot...

at night we hide behind burglar bars.

when i'm in the US my doors are locked no matter what. we have no burglar bars. funny, no one has tried to rob us either place in a long time... but... it happens to others. maybe my house just looks too ratty? 😛

I always lock the car. Most burlars who are serious will break the damn window anyway... bc they want to steal the car, take it somewhere quiet and strip it... so you can't stop car theft, period... some of them actually will tow your car.

Theft from auto... that happens if you leave your car unlocked.. anything inside your car becomes fair game... unless it's really obviously valuable, most casual thieves tend NOT to break windows b/c they are actually afraid of being caught... They are mostly kids and junkies or kids who are junkies...

In the olden days (a few years ago) I've had my parking quarters stolen (no one has quarter meters anymore, so that won't happen anymore) and little things... and lots of people have had radios stolen though my car is so old and it's an OEM radio... i don't think anyone wants a 30 year old radio that was NOT state of the art when my car was new. I mostly listen to books on my phone and don't care. Yes, I love my old car and it's in very good condition for a 30 year old car... almost stealable as a classic (if you're a crazy idiot who likes old quirky cars) but it wasn't fancy or a muscle car so probably not that interesting to steal though on the rare occasions i see on on the road in good shape I think I'd like to steal it! but I don't...

The other reason i won't leave my car unlocked is that i don't want someone to hide in the back seat and assault me for any reason (robbery or sexual assault).

100% YES. Coming from someone who was trained from a young age to immediately lock the door behind me, whether coming or going. Only time it's not locked is if I've just let a dog outside, and the our little fella won't hesitate to let you know if someone's in the yard, stranger or not.

You can always employ a similar method to one used to stop a locked bike being stolen. Which is to lock it up it next to a better bike with a cheaper lock.

So, if your neighbour's house has better stuff on display, just make sure your house and alarm are better than theirs.
